Most Umrah journeys from Jeddah Airport to Makkah begin the same way, and the taxi fare is the first question: you land at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, collect your bags and need to be in Makkah, about 100 km away. The decision is not complicated, but it is worth making calmly before you travel. Fares quoted at the kerb can differ widely, the Haramain train is a good alternative if your hotel is well placed, and the last few kilometres into the city depend on road access that changes by season.
This page sets out the options, the realistic travel time and the practical details a first-time visitor should know. If you want a pre-booked car, the booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
Who can travel from Jeddah Airport to Makkah?
Makkah is a holy city for Muslims. The Government of Canada's travel advice states that non-Muslims are forbidden from travelling to the holy city of Mecca, while Muslim visitors can perform Umrah on a Saudi tourist visa. This transfer is for Muslim travellers making Umrah or an ordinary visit.
Read the entry rules for your own passport before you book. The Government of Canada's Saudi Arabia travel advice says travellers can obtain a tourist visa online or on arrival at the airport, that the tourist visa allows multiple entries and is valid for one year, and that a stay may last up to 90 days in total per year. It adds that Muslim tourists can perform Umrah with any type of visa, but that a specific visa is required for Hajj. The Saudi eVisa portal describes the tourist visa as one-year, multiple-entry, allowing up to 90 days and covering Umrah but not Hajj, and lists Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom among eligible countries.
If your party includes someone who is not Muslim, plan their stay in Jeddah and tell the desk when you book, so each leg of the itinerary is arranged correctly. Nusuk is the official platform for Hajj, Umrah and Rawdah services in Madinah; check the Nusuk site for current permit requirements before you travel. Hajj itself has its own visa and booking process, and this page does not cover Hajj movements. The Government of Canada's advice expects the next Hajj around 14 to 19 May 2027, and both Canadian and UK advice note that around Hajj, visitors without a Hajj visa can be stopped from flying to Jeddah, Madinah and Taif.

What about the "Jeddah Airport to Makkah taxi fare"?
Travellers search for this because airport taxi prices vary. We could not verify a single published fare for the trip, and quoting an unverified number would not help you. What changes the price at the kerb is easy to list: the vehicle size, the time of day, whether it is Ramadan or an Umrah peak, and your final drop-off in Makkah. A taxi is also a negotiation, which is tiring after a flight.
If you want a known figure, that is the main reason to pre-book. The booker shows our fixed fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay, so there is no discussion at the kerb. Keep in mind that this protects you from surprises on price, not from traffic, which is why the driver's local knowledge matters.
The Haramain train: when it works and when it does not
The Haramain High Speed Railway has a station at King Abdulaziz International Airport. According to the operator's airport station page, it sits inside the main terminal building, links the new terminal with the rail network, buses, shuttles, taxis and parking, and operates daily from 06:30 to 00:30. The Makkah station is in the Ar Rusayfah district, and its page places it 3.5 km from Masjid al-Haram, with 4,750 parking spaces and the same daily hours.
That 3.5 km is the point to weigh. The train takes you to the edge of the holy city, not to your hotel door, so you will still need a taxi or car for the last stretch. The operator's baggage rules allow one large piece up to 25 kg (65 x 55 x 35 cm) plus one extra hand item per passenger, which suits a light traveller and not a family returning with extra bags from a long trip.
The train is the better choice if:
- you are travelling alone or as a couple with modest luggage;
- you land during the day, within the station's operating hours;
- your hotel is close to the Makkah station or you are happy to take a short taxi from there.
The car is the better choice if you land after midnight, have more than one large bag each, travel with children or older relatives, or want to avoid changing modes.
Landing at Jeddah and meeting your driver
After a long flight the arrivals sequence is passport control, baggage, customs and the arrivals hall, which can take an hour or more at busy times. Tell us your flight number at booking. We track every airport pickup, and free waiting time is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one. Name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request, and you can use an alias name on the board.
Rather than guessing which door to use, the chauffeur gets the terminal and meeting point in advance. Read about airport meet and greet for the standard process, or the broader meet and greet hub for other airports.
Choosing the right vehicle for Umrah travel
Umrah itineraries often bring three generations together, so space and easy entry count for more than the badge. A couple travelling light fits an Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar), which seats three with two large and two cabin bags. An extended family with luggage for a week or more should choose the Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar), which carries up to six people and five to six large bags. For up to twelve travellers and twelve bags there is the Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter); see Sprinter van with driver. Larger congregations can ask for a mini-coach or coach of 20 to 56 seats.
Models are confirmed at booking as "or similar". Seats for infants, toddlers and boosters are available on request, and most vehicles carry water and a phone charger. Inside Saudi Arabia the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner using vehicles no more than four model years old, while the Toronto desk of Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices it. The fleet page lists each class.
Arriving in Makkah: drop-off, access and dress
Roads and parking around the Haram can be restricted during busy periods, so the drop-off point on the day may be the nearest permitted spot rather than the hotel door. Give the full hotel name and address, and keep your hotel's contact details handy. Dress and conduct guidance from the Government of Canada asks visitors to dress conservatively and behave discreetly, especially in Makkah and Madinah.
For prayer times, tell the desk if you want the pickup timed around them. The chauffeur will follow the plan on the day as far as road conditions allow.
Continuing to Madinah afterward
Many visitors combine Makkah with Madinah. The return leg from Madinah to Jeddah for your flight home is covered in Madinah to Jeddah Airport, and multi-leg itineraries can sit on one booking. For airport details in the wider region, see Riyadh King Khalid Airport transfers, the Middle East overview and the transfers hub. Read how private airport transfers work for the booking process.
Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%. Major events and conventions sometimes have their own deadline; when they do, it appears on the confirmation.
