Many visitors to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls never fly into Canada at all. They land at Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF), drive north on the Niagara Thruway and cross the Niagara River into Ontario. The airport describes itself as "mere miles from the Canadian border and the QEW," and for a lot of itineraries that is the shorter, simpler arrival. This page covers the crossing from start to finish, in both directions, and shows where a private car makes sense.
What is the best way to get from Buffalo Airport to Niagara Falls, Canada?
For most visitors the simplest way is a pre-booked private car. The trip is about 50 km (31 mi), takes 45 to 75 minutes in normal conditions, and includes one border inspection. A car that meets you at arrivals avoids searching for a driver willing to cross, and it carries all your luggage straight to your hotel in Ontario.
The reason a car works well here is that this is not an ordinary airport run. A taxi or rideshare driver on the US side may or may not take a fare into Canada, and a metered cross-border ride has no ceiling on the waiting time at the bridge. A pre-booked transfer fixes the fare before you leave, tracks your flight, and has a driver who knows which bridge to use and how to approach the Canadian inspection booths.

| Taxi from the BUF curb | 45 – 90 min | Metered; cross-border rules vary by driver | Whatever fits | Spontaneous arrivals |
| Rideshare | Varies; cross-border acceptance depends on the driver | Surge-priced | Whatever fits | Short notice, one or two travellers |
| Rental car | 45 – 75 min plus pick-up queue | Rental rate and cross-border terms | Whatever fits | Several days across both sides |
The airport itself lists shuttles and vans, taxis, rideshare, limousines and a page on Canadian ground transportation. Check Buffalo Niagara International Airport for the arrivals layout and pickup points before you land. The airport's address is 4200 Genesee Street, Buffalo, New York.
When a shuttle or a taxi is the better choice
We would rather you spend your money sensibly. A scheduled shared shuttle can be a fair choice if you are travelling alone with one bag, you are happy to share the ride, and your arrival time lines up with a departure. A taxi can work if you land on a quiet afternoon, your hotel is close to the Rainbow Bridge and you do not mind negotiating cross-border terms with the driver at the curb.
A private car is the stronger choice in the following cases:
- You land after dark or late. Shared shuttles run on schedules. A pre-booked car waits for your flight.
- Three or more people travel together. A single vehicle replaces several seats.
- You carry a lot. Strollers, car seats and big cases fit better in a Luxury SUV or an Executive Sprinter.
- Children and car seats. Infant carriers, toddler seats and boosters are available; request them when you book.
- You want a quiet border crossing. One driver, one booking, one set of documents.
- The hotel is on Fallsview Boulevard or at the Falls. The driver knows the access roads and the best drop point.
The route: Niagara Thruway, border bridge, then the Canadian side
From BUF the usual road is Interstate 190, the Niagara Thruway, north toward Niagara Falls, New York. There are three practical crossings into Ontario:
- Rainbow Bridge. The closest crossing to the Falls themselves, and the one most hotels and visitors prefer. The CBSA lists it as a travellers-only crossing.
- Lewiston–Queenston Bridge. A wider choice when the Rainbow queue is heavy, and it feeds the QEW.
- Peace Bridge. At Buffalo's edge, with Fort Erie on the Canadian side. It adds distance to Niagara Falls, so it is a fallback rather than a default.
The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission posts live status for the three bridges on its website, and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) publishes its own wait times. Look at both before any border trip. On the morning we checked, Rainbow Bridge showed a one-minute traveller wait and the Peace Bridge about seven minutes, but those times change by the hour.
Each crossing has a different landing on the Canadian side, so your chauffeur chooses based on your hotel, not on habit. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists current status and NEXUS-only lane information, and the CBSA wait times page shows wait estimates by port.
Documents you need for the Canada crossing
Bring the same documents you would for any border trip. Check the Government of Canada's entry requirements for your nationality before you travel.
- Foreign nationals arriving by land. Canada.ca states that travellers who need an eTA to fly do not need one to enter by car, bus, train or boat. A valid passport is still required, plus a visa if your nationality needs one.
- US citizens and permanent residents. The Canadian government lists a US national or permanent resident among travellers who need neither a visa nor an eTA. A valid passport is recommended.
- Children. Carry the passport or identity of every child in the vehicle, and any custody letters that apply to your situation.
- Declarations. Declare food, alcohol, cash over the limit and any goods you bring across, as you would at any inspection.
The page to read before you fly is Entry requirements by country on Canada.ca. Your chauffeur cannot fix a missing document at the booth, so check early.
Niagara Falls, Canada to Buffalo Airport: the return trip
Going back is the same distance, with the inspection on the other side. After you cross into the US you are inspected by US officers, then you continue to the airport, where the terminal is only a few minutes from the highway.
- Allow border time first, flight time second. For a domestic departure we plan the pickup so you reach the terminal with comfortable margin after the bridge. The airport notes that its US destinations have no extra customs stop at BUF, since the US entry inspection already took place at the bridge.
- Bring your passport out of the suitcase. Keep it in your hand luggage until you have cleared the bridge.
- NEXUS holders. A NEXUS card speeds the crossing in the dedicated lane when it is open. The bridge commission's page shows the Whirlpool Rapids bridge as NEXUS-only.
- Early flights. Book a pickup at the hotel the night before, and let the desk know the flight number.
Our return trips use the same fixed-fare booking. Tell the booker the flight time, and the pickup is set backward from it.
What happens when you land at BUF
- Landing. Flight tracking is on from the moment you book. We see delays and gate changes.
- Baggage. Your chauffeur waits. Customs queues are covered by 60 minutes of free waiting after international landings (30 after domestic).
- Meeting. A name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request. If you prefer privacy, an alias name goes on the board.
- Departure. The chauffeur loads the bags and heads north on the Thruway.
- Border. The vehicle goes through the passenger lane with your documents ready.
- Hotel. The drop point is the hotel entrance, or the closest legal curb.
The airport meet and greet page describes the arrivals service in more detail. If you start the day in Toronto and land at BUF later, see Toronto to Buffalo Airport.

How booking and the fixed fare work
Open the booker, enter the pickup (BUF or your Niagara hotel), the drop-off, the date, the time and your party size. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. One booking, one confirmation, one invoice. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing and multi-leg itineraries on one booking are supported, and the 24/7 desk in Toronto handles changes.
Cancellation works as follows. More than 72 hours' notice has no charge, 72 hours or less is 10%, 48 hours or less is 50%, and 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Read the FAQ for more.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Buffalo Airport from Niagara Falls, Canada?
It is roughly 50 km (31 mi) by road to the Canadian side, depending on the bridge and your hotel. Allow 45 to 75 minutes in normal conditions, plus the border queue. The Rainbow Bridge is the usual crossing for hotels near the Falls.
Can a taxi or rideshare take me from Buffalo Airport into Canada?
Some can, but it depends on the driver and the app, and you may need to ask at the curb. A pre-booked transfer removes the guesswork because the driver and vehicle are confirmed in advance, and the fare is fixed before you leave.
Do I need a visa or eTA to cross the border by car?
Canada.ca states you do not need an eTA to enter by land or sea, but you still need a valid passport and a visa if your nationality requires one. US citizens do not need a visa or eTA. Check the current rules for your passport before you travel.
Which bridge is fastest, Rainbow or Peace?
Wait times change by hour. The Rainbow Bridge is the closest to the Falls, and the Lewiston–Queenston Bridge is the usual alternative. The Peace Bridge adds distance on the Canadian side. Your chauffeur checks live conditions and picks the best bridge for your hotel.
How long does the border crossing take?
Delays vary from almost nothing to over an hour in peak holiday periods. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission and the CBSA publish live waits. We allow for typical queues when planning the pickup, and add margin on holiday weekends.
Can you pick me up at my Niagara Falls hotel and take me back to Buffalo Airport?
Yes. Book the return as a separate leg or as part of a multi-leg booking. Tell the desk your flight time and number, and we set the pickup time back from it, allowing for the US inspection at the bridge.
How much is a private car from Buffalo Airport to Niagara Falls?
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. We do not publish a price list because the figure depends on the hotel address, the vehicle class, the date and the time.
What if my flight is delayed?
Flight tracking is on for every airport pickup. Included waiting runs 60 minutes from an international landing and 30 from a domestic one. The chauffeur adjusts to the actual arrival.
Can I bring a child seat?
Yes. Infant, toddler and booster seats are supplied when you ask for them at booking. Tell us the ages of the children so the right seats are in the vehicle at pickup.
