What is a resort transfer and how does a private one work?

A resort transfer is the journey from an airport to a resort. With Onroutz.ca it is a pre-booked private car: your chauffeur tracks your flight, meets you at arrivals, loads the bags and drives to the resort entrance for a fixed fare shown before you pay. Local partners deliver it, and the Toronto desk supports it 24/7.

The idea is simple, and the word "private" is doing a lot of work. A private transfer means the vehicle carries only your party. It does not collect strangers from three other flights, stop at other resorts or leave when a van is full. For a family arriving after a long flight, those three features are the whole case.

This hub explains the model and points to the guides for each destination. The destination pages carry the distances, the mode comparison and the local rules. The Caribbean and Mexico hub covers entry paperwork and the regional picture, while this page is about the transfer itself.

Check your fixed fare

From landing to lobby: the six steps

Every resort transfer follows the same six steps. Knowing them in advance makes the first hour of a holiday easier.

  1. Book. You enter the airport, flight number, resort, number of passengers and bags. The booker shows a fixed all-in fare for that exact trip.
  2. Confirm. You receive one confirmation. Your chauffeur's details follow before travel.
  3. Land. We track the flight, not the schedule, so an early or late arrival is handled without a phone call.
  4. Meet. The chauffeur waits for you. A name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request, with an alias on the board if you prefer privacy.
  5. Drive. Bags are loaded and the car goes straight to your resort. Water and phone charging are available in most vehicles.
  6. Arrive. The car stops at the lobby entrance where the resort's bell staff take over.

Free waiting time protects you on the way: 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one.

Resort transfers compared: private car, shared van, taxi or rental

The table compares the usual options at a resort airport. Costs are described by method, because published fares differ by airport and change often.

The Government of Canada's travel advice repeats the same practical points across the region: use official taxis, agree fares in advance, never share a taxi with strangers and have pickups arranged through your hotel where possible. A pre-booked transfer answers each of those points at once.

All-inclusive check-in, luggage and the first hour

An all-inclusive resort has a rhythm that a transfer should fit. Many resorts have room-ready times in the afternoon, so arriving at 11 a.m. can mean a wait for the room. A transfer cannot change a resort's policy, but it can remove the extra delays that come before it.

Luggage is the other pressure. Beach holidays mean large bags, golf clubs, strollers and sometimes diving gear. Choose the vehicle by bag count, not just by heads. A Luxury SUV takes up to 6 passengers and 5–6 large bags, and an Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. If your party is larger, mini-coaches and coaches of 20–56 seats are available on request, and availability is confirmed at booking.

Late arrivals and early departures

Resort airports in the Caribbean and Mexico often receive many flights in waves, and many arrive in the evening. A late arrival raises two real questions: will the resort hold the room, and will the driver still be there if the flight is delayed? Tell the resort your flight number. For the driver, flight tracking solves it: the pickup follows the landing, not the original schedule.

For departures, the reverse applies. Many airlines advise arriving about three hours ahead of an international flight, so the drive is the smaller part of the plan. Book the car for a fixed pickup time at the resort, with a margin for the resort's own checkout and the airport's queue.

Weddings, reunions and group travel

Resorts host weddings and group events all year. A group transfer is a different product from a family transfer, and it needs different planning:

  • Count heads and bags per flight, not for the whole party.
  • Group arrivals on several flights can be placed on one booking with several legs.
  • A Sprinter or a coach lets the group arrive together and share the first moments.
  • Nominate a single contact so changes reach the desk quickly.

Read our guide to wedding guest shuttles for the event side, and the events hub for corporate and trade-show travel.

Entry paperwork before the car arrives

You can have the best transfer in the world and still lose an hour in the immigration queue if the forms are wrong. Several destinations in this section require online forms before arrival, such as the Dominican Republic's E-ticket and Aruba's ED card, and the Quintana Roo state charges a tourist tax called Visitax, which its portal calls mandatory for all foreign tourists. Our Caribbean and Mexico hub lists the rules for each country. For the ones above, read the Government of Canada's advice for Aruba, Saint Lucia and Costa Rica, and the Visitax portal for Quintana Roo. Always check the official source before you fly.

Airport-run VIP services

Some airports offer their own VIP arrival and departure services in addition to a ground transfer. At Punta Cana International Airport, which has Terminals A and B along with a VIP terminal, the airport's website describes paid VIP entry and exit assistance that must be requested in advance. It is a separate service from the car that takes you to the resort. If you want assistance through the terminal and a driver outside, the two can be arranged side by side. See the airport's own website for what it offers.

How we deliver outside Toronto

Outside Toronto, the GTA and southern Ontario, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, and the booking, confirmation, support and invoice come from the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto. Every partner car is within four model years of new, except Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach, allowed up to seven. Nobody should promise you offices or cars that do not exist, and we do not.

Browse the airport transfers hub, the hotel transfers hub and the fleet to see what else is on offer, and the Toronto hub if your trip starts in Canada. For a stopover or cruise in Florida, see the USA hub.

Frequently asked questions

What is a resort transfer?

It is the journey from the airport to your resort. A private resort transfer is a pre-booked car that carries only your party, tracks your flight, meets you at arrivals and drives to the resort entrance. Shared transfers carry several parties and stop at several resorts.

Is a private transfer worth it for a short airport-to-resort drive?

It depends on the group. For a couple with carry-on bags, a short taxi may be fine. For families, groups, heavy luggage, late arrivals or first visits, a private car removes queues, negotiation and waiting.

Do I need to book a resort transfer in advance?

Booking in advance is recommended, especially for evening arrivals, large groups and peak seasons. The Government of Canada's advice also recommends arranging pickups ahead of arrival in several destinations in this region.

Can the driver wait if my flight is late?

Yes. Your driver tracks the flight and adjusts to the actual landing. Customs queues are covered by 60 minutes of free waiting after international landings (30 after domestic). If you expect a longer delay, tell the desk.

Do you provide car seats and booster seats?

Yes. Add a child seat at booking; infant, toddler and booster sizes are available. Tell us how many and how old the children are.

Can I book a return transfer on the same booking?

Yes. Multi-leg itineraries, including arrival and departure transfers, can sit on one booking with one confirmation and one invoice. Give us your resort and flight details for both legs.

How much is a resort transfer?

The booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact airport, resort and vehicle before you pay. We do not publish rates in articles because they depend on the route and the vehicle class.

What is the cancellation policy?

More than 72 hours' notice has no charge. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10 percent, at 48 hours or less it is 50 percent, and at 24 hours or less or on a no-show it is 100 percent, counted from the scheduled pickup. Peak events occasionally use a different cut-off, which is stated on the confirmation.
