Nassau is the shortest airport run on most Caribbean itineraries, and that makes it easy to underestimate. Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) sits at the western end of New Providence, while the cruise port, downtown and Paradise Island are across the island. Onroutz.ca arranges airport transportation in Nassau, Bahamas, with a licensed local driver, flight tracking and a fixed fare shown before you pay. This page sets out how the trip works, how long each stretch really takes, how a private car compares with taxis and hotel shuttles, and the entry points travellers from Canada, the US and the UK ask about.

How does airport transportation in Nassau, Bahamas work?

You book online with your flight number and destination. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto confirms the booking and assigns a vetted, licensed, commercially insured local partner in Nassau. The driver tracks the flight, meets you at arrivals with a name board and drives directly to your hotel, villa or ship for the fare you were shown.

In The Bahamas the ride is delivered by a local transfer partner, and the Toronto desk stays responsible for it. You get one confirmation, one invoice and one 24/7 contact. The partner fleet is capped at four model years old. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting from landing; domestic arrivals include 30. If your flight is delayed, tracking moves the pickup and you do not need to ring anyone.

A short transfer does not mean a trivial one. For a solo traveller with a carry-on, a licensed taxi may be all you need. The private car earns its place when you are three or more, when you travel with children, when you arrive late, or when your plans include more than one stop, such as the airport, a lunch downtown and the hotel.

Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS)

The airport is about 16 km (10 miles) west of Nassau's city centre, on the western side of New Providence. It is operated by Vantage Airport Group on behalf of the government-owned development company, and the redevelopment added a new US departures terminal and refurbished the arrivals halls. NAS is also one of the Caribbean airports with US border preclearance, which means US-bound passengers clear US immigration and customs in Nassau before boarding. On departure day, allow for the extra processing.

On arrival, you clear Bahamian immigration, collect your bags and pass through customs. Your driver waits outside the customs exit with a board. A name-board meet and greet inside arrivals can be requested at booking, and an alias can go on the board for privacy. Most travellers will not need to know which door applies, since flight tracking sends the driver to the right place.

Nassau airport to your hotel: distances and drive times

The island is small, but traffic can make short distances long. Use these planning figures:

  • Cable Beach and Baha Mar: a few kilometres from the airport, usually 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Downtown Nassau and Prince George Wharf (cruise port): about 16 km (10 miles), usually 20 to 40 minutes.
  • Paradise Island (Atlantis and the bridges): about 18 to 22 km (11 to 14 miles), usually 25 to 45 minutes.
  • Western New Providence (Lyford Cay and Old Fort Bay): shorter than the cruise port in distance, 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Eastern New Providence: a longer drive through the city.

The Government of Canada's travel advice describes "severe traffic congestion in Nassau", with drivers who are often reckless in traffic, so build slack into any pickup that is attached to a fixed event such as a cruise departure or a restaurant booking. Bay Street, the main tourist road, runs the length of the island east to west. The Bahamas drives on the left, although many cars are imported left-hand-drive US models, which can confuse visitors on foot.

Taxis in Nassau are not metered. The Government of Canada's advice says there are standard taxi fares based on zones, and it recommends confirming the fare in advance, using only officially marked taxis with "TN" on yellow licence plates and never sharing a taxi with strangers. A private transfer takes the negotiation out: the fare is fixed in the booker, and the driver and vehicle are shown on your confirmation. Jitney buses are a local mode and a poor fit for luggage; use them only if you know the routes.

Cable Beach, Baha Mar and western Nassau

Cable Beach is the resort strip nearest to the airport. Five hotels line the beach, two of them all-inclusive, and the Baha Mar complex, which opened in 2017 and added more than 2,000 rooms and a large casino and convention centre, anchors the middle of the strip. The airport-to-hotel ride is short enough that a private transfer is mainly about arrival experience: the driver at the door, luggage handled and no queue at the taxi rank.

If your hotel is in one of the gated enclaves at the western end, such as Lyford Cay, give the desk the full address and the resident or host name, because the guard post at the gate often needs it. For a villa, send the host's contact details too. Guests staying in smaller properties beyond Cable Beach should confirm the street address with the owner, as house numbers are often missing.

Paradise Island, Atlantis and downtown

Paradise Island is reached by bridge from downtown Nassau, and the resort there accounts for more tourist arrivals than any other single hotel property in the city. From the airport the drive crosses town and can take 25 to 45 minutes, longer at the start of the afternoon rush or when a ship day fills the streets. Ferries also run between downtown and Paradise Island, but they are a harbour option, not an airport option.

Downtown Nassau is the cruise port, the straw market and the government offices. Prince George Wharf is the city's main seaport and sits within walking distance of Bay Street. If you are meeting a ship, tell the desk which berth and which ship, and we will check against the schedule. For cruise logistics in general, see cruise transfers.

Staying safe around the ports and resorts

The Government of Canada advises a high degree of caution in The Bahamas and notes high rates of crime, especially in Nassau and Freeport. It says robberies also occur in cruise ship terminals and in popular resort areas, including in daylight, while serious violence is concentrated in non-tourist areas of downtown Nassau after dark. The practical points are simple: stay in tourist areas, do not walk alone after dark, lock car doors and keep valuables out of sight. It also warns that fatal road accidents are frequent on New Providence and that pedestrians are at risk, which is another reason to arrive by pre-arranged car.

Cruise days, pre-cruise stays and combined itineraries

Nassau is a port of call and a turnaround port, and ship days put pressure on taxis and roads. If you arrive the day before a cruise, a hotel night with a pre-booked pickup to the pier is less stressful than relying on a taxi rank outside the terminal at 10:00. If you arrive on the same morning, build in a margin of at least a few hours between landing and the ship's final boarding time, since flight delays and customs lines are the usual reasons for a tight connection.

An itinerary that starts at the airport, stops for lunch and ends at the ship can sit on one booking with one invoice. We also arrange the reverse: hotel to airport, ship to airport or ship to hotel. Tell the desk the ship's name and the time you must be on board, and the pickup is calculated back from that time.

Entry rules and paperwork

The Bahamas tourism board states that non-citizens and non-residents need a passport valid for at least six months at the time of entry, a return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation, and may be asked for proof of funds. Visitors from many countries need no visa for stays under three months; Canadian citizens need one only beyond eight months. Everyone completes an immigration card on arrival. See the Bahamas entry requirements and the Government of Canada's Bahamas page, which says your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date you expect to leave.

Children travelling with one parent may need a notarized letter from the other parent, and the official checklist covers yellow fever certificates for travellers arriving from listed risk countries; read the full entering and leaving checklist.

Time zone, hurricane season and departure day

The Bahamas runs on Eastern time with daylight saving, which is the same clock as Toronto, so there is no time difference for Ontario travellers. On departure day, US-bound passengers clear US preclearance at the airport, so plan to arrive earlier than you would for a domestic hop. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from early June to the end of November; if a storm approaches, airlines and the airport announce changes early, and the desk adjusts pickups to your new arrival time.

Vehicles, child seats and groups

The Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) takes up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 cabin bags. The First Class Sedan takes up to 3. The Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) takes up to 6 with 5 to 6 large bags. The Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags; coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. All are "or similar", with the model confirmed at booking. See the fleet.

Ask for child, toddler or booster seats when you book. Wedding groups and corporate events can be handled with staggered pickups; see weddings. If you plan to be in Nassau for several days, a personal driver can be booked by the day.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Nassau airport from Cable Beach and Paradise Island?

Cable Beach is a few kilometres away, usually 10 to 20 minutes. Paradise Island is about 18 to 22 km (11 to 14 miles) across town and typically takes 25 to 45 minutes, longer in traffic. The cruise port is about 16 km (10 miles) from the airport, usually 20 to 40 minutes.

How much is a taxi from Nassau airport?

Taxis in Nassau are not metered. They use standard fares based on zones, and the Government of Canada advises confirming the fare in advance. The Onroutz.ca booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay, so there is no negotiation at the kerb.

Do I need a visa for The Bahamas?

Visitors from many countries do not need a visa for stays under three months, and Canadian citizens need one only beyond eight months. You do need a passport valid for at least six months, a return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation. Check the official Bahamas site before you travel.

Is there Uber or a ride-hailing app in Nassau?

We cannot verify the current rules for ride-hailing in Nassau and do not recommend relying on it for an airport pickup. Canada's travel advice says to use officially marked taxis with "TN" plates. A pre-booked transfer gives you a named driver and a confirmed vehicle before you land.

Can you pick me up at the cruise port?

Yes. Tell us the ship, the berth if you know it and the time you must disembark, and we will schedule the pickup around the ship's arrival. We can also take you from the airport to the ship; the pickup time is worked back from the boarding cut-off.

Is it safe to travel by taxi or bus in Nassau?

The Government of Canada advises using officially marked taxis, not sharing a taxi with strangers and avoiding local minibuses outside the main tourist areas after dark. It also notes high crime rates in parts of Nassau. A pre-arranged transfer from the airport to a resort area follows that advice.

What happens if my flight is late?

Flight tracking moves the pickup to your actual landing time. International arrivals receive 60 minutes of free waiting from landing, and domestic arrivals receive 30. If you will miss a connection or a ship, message the 24/7 desk and we will adjust the booking.
