A cab to Gatwick Airport is one of the most searched ground-transport phrases in Britain, and the reason is simple: Gatwick is the airport for early starts. Holiday flights, low-fare carriers and many transatlantic services depart in the first wave of the morning, when the Underground is quiet and a taxi rank is a gamble. Whether you are leaving a London townhouse at 3 am or landing at the North Terminal after a night flight and heading for a Sussex manor, this page sets out how every option works and where a pre-booked Gatwick airport transfer from Onroutz.ca earns its place.

What is the best way to get a cab to Gatwick Airport?

Pre-book a licensed private car for any departure outside normal train hours, for groups, or when you carry heavy bags. Rail is quicker for one person travelling light between central London and Gatwick's South Terminal. Street hailing a black cab works in London, but the minicab you want for the long run south should be booked in advance.

In London, licensed black cabs can be hailed, while private hire cars operate on pre-booking. That distinction matters at 4 am when you are standing on a corner in Clapham and the app shows no cars. A booked car removes the guesswork: the vehicle is assigned, your flight is tracked, and the chauffeur is on the street when you step out. For arrivals at Gatwick, the same logic applies in reverse.

Gatwick's two terminals and the train station between them

Gatwick has two terminals, North and South, connected by a free shuttle that Gatwick states takes two minutes. All rail services run from the South Terminal station, which is about a five-minute walk from the departures and arrivals areas. If you land at the North Terminal and want a train, you take the shuttle first. Your airline, not Gatwick, decides which terminal you use, so look at your booking confirmation.

For a private car, the terminal matters less than the instruction. Give us your flight number and the terminal appears in the confirmation. For arrivals, the chauffeur can meet you inside the hall with a name board; for departures, the car goes to the drop-off zone at your terminal. Gatwick's drop-off area at the North Terminal is on the lower level between the Sofitel and the multi-storey car park, and the South Terminal's is also on the lower level.

Gatwick's own transport page describes a train leaving the airport on average every four minutes across four operators: Gatwick Express, Southern, Thameslink and Great Western Railway. The Gatwick Express is non-stop to London Victoria and takes 30 minutes, departing twice an hour. Thameslink reaches London Bridge, Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon and St Pancras International; Gatwick quotes 30 to 45 minutes for central London across the three main operators.

When is rail the right call? When you are travelling alone or as a couple, with a cabin bag, between 06:00 and 22:00, to a destination near a line. Rail is also immune to the M23 and M25, which is a real advantage on a Friday evening. The private car earns its place in the other seven hours of the day, and any time the second leg across London is the hard part.

Pre-dawn departures: when the first train is too late

Most departures that people dread are the 06:00 and 07:00 flights, because check-in recommendations push you to the airport around 03:30 – 04:30. Airlines publish their own check-in deadlines, so confirm yours; what matters here is the car. A booked transfer lets you pick a time and stick to it. Your chauffeur will already have checked the roads and your flight status, and the desk can be reached around the clock if plans change.

A sensible rule for a morning departure from central London is to book the car to arrive 10 minutes early and aim to reach the terminal about three hours before an international flight. That is one hour for the drive in the dark, a margin for the M23, and the rest for check-in and security. For short-haul flights, airlines often allow a shorter lead, but they leave little slack for bad luck.

The roads between London and Gatwick

The usual route from central London is south through Brixton and Streatham to the A23 and M23, or around via the M25 for south-west and western origins. Gatwick's pre-booked taxi page gives an average of about 1 hour 45 minutes from King's Cross to the North Terminal, with a warning that traffic and roadworks can change that. In light traffic the same trip is closer to 60 minutes, so plan for the range.

Typical times and distances by car:

  • Central London: about 45 km (28 mi), 60 – 105 min.
  • Brighton and Hove: about 45 km (28 mi), 45 – 70 min.
  • Heathrow: about 70 km (43 mi), 60 – 90 min, see Heathrow to Gatwick.
  • Crawley, Horley and the Gatwick area: 5 to 20 min, depending on the destination.

The congested stretches are the A23 through south London, the M25 around junctions 7 and 8, and anywhere with roadworks on the M23. On a Friday afternoon in summer, the M25 can double a journey time.

Gatwick drop-off charges and why a driver does not wait at the kerb

Gatwick's terminals have drop-off zones where vehicles pay a minimum of £10 for the first 10 minutes, then £1 for each additional minute up to 20 minutes, to a maximum charge of £30 and a maximum stay of 30 minutes. The payment is due by midnight the day after use, and blue badge holders are exempt if registered. Taxi and minicab operators add the charge to your fare, which is a quirk that makes a metered cab hard to price in advance.

Waiting is handled differently. Gatwick runs a dedicated 24/7 waiting area for licensed private hire drivers at the South Terminal. With us the system is simple: your chauffeur waits in the right place, meets you inside arrivals if you ask for a name board, and the fixed fare takes the charge into account before you pay.

How your Onroutz.ca Gatwick airport transfer works

Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based desk that books, confirms, supports and invoices the whole trip. In England the driving is done by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner whose cars are never more than four model years old (seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach).

  1. Booking. Enter pickup and drop-off, flight number, terminal and passenger count. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare before you pay.
  2. Confirmation. You receive chauffeur details, the vehicle class and the meeting point.
  3. Tracking. Flights are tracked, so an early or late landing is handled without a phone call.
  4. Meeting you. On arrival, 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one; other pickups include 15 minutes.
  5. One invoice. Everything lands on a single invoice, and corporate accounts can be billed monthly.

Four classes cover most parties: Executive Sedan (up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 cabin bags), First Class Sedan (up to 3), Luxury SUV (up to 6 passengers, 5 – 6 large bags) and Executive Sprinter (up to 12 passengers and 12 bags). Models are "or similar", confirmed at booking. Browse the fleet for more.

Entry rules and arrival notes for visitors landing at Gatwick

Gatwick is a UK port of entry, so the UK rules apply and not the Schengen ones. Visitors from Canada and the United States generally need an Electronic Travel Authorisation. The gov.uk page states that an ETA costs £20, allows travel for up to six months, is required for each person including children, and does not guarantee entry. Apply only on the official government service.

Queues at passport control vary by hour, and a late-evening wave of long-haul arrivals can mean a long wait. The free waiting period after an international landing, 60 minutes, is there to absorb it.

Gatwick versus Heathrow versus a day trip from London

If you can choose, think about what happens after you land. Gatwick is closer to Sussex, Surrey, Kent and the south coast, so a car from Gatwick to Brighton, Tunbridge Wells or a country house is often a better trip than anything from Heathrow. For central London, the two airports are close competitors. For a trip that mixes airports, our Heathrow Airport transfer page covers the western gateway, and Heathrow to central London shows the city approach.

London also has a Congestion Charge of £18 a day, applying on weekdays from 07:00 to 18:00 and on weekends and bank holidays from 12:00 to 18:00, per Transport for London. It affects only trips that enter the central zone, which a departure from the city centre will. The fixed fare accounts for it.

Gatwick transfers to cruise ports, rail stations and the rest of Europe

Many Gatwick arrivals head straight to a ship. The Southampton cruise transfer page gives timings, embarkation windows and luggage handling, and if you are connecting to a train, King's Cross and St Pancras explains the approach. For Europe-wide trips, the Europe private transfer hub links every gateway we cover, and the general airport transfers hub lists every airport. If you are weighing a car against a taxi or app, read airport transfers versus taxis and rideshares.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a cab to Gatwick Airport?

It depends on distance, traffic, time of day and extras such as Gatwick's drop-off charge, which taxi operators add to the fare. We do not publish a figure; the booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay, so there is no meter to watch.

Can I hail a cab to Gatwick in London?

You can hail a black cab in London, but a licensed private hire car should be pre-booked, and an early-morning run to Gatwick is best arranged the day before. A booked car has your flight details and a confirmed pickup time, which a street cab does not.

How long does it take to get from central London to Gatwick by car?

Roughly 60 to 105 minutes for about 45 km (28 mi), depending on route and hour. Early mornings are fastest, while Friday afternoons can double the M25 portion. Gatwick's own page gives about 1 hour 45 minutes from King's Cross to the North Terminal as an average, so allow a buffer.

What is the fastest train from London to Gatwick?

The Gatwick Express from London Victoria is non-stop and takes 30 minutes, departing twice an hour, according to Gatwick. Thameslink and Southern serve other central stations and typically take longer. All trains use the South Terminal station, so North Terminal passengers take a free two-minute shuttle.

Which Gatwick terminal do I need?

That depends on your airline, which is shown on your booking confirmation. The North and South Terminals are linked by a free shuttle that Gatwick says takes two minutes. If you give us your flight number, the terminal appears in your confirmation, and the chauffeur is told where to meet you.

Can a private car wait for me if my flight is late?

Yes. Flights are tracked, and after an international landing there is 60 minutes of free waiting, 30 after a domestic one, and 15 on other pickups. If your plans change mid-journey, the round-the-clock desk can move the pickup time.

Is there a free shuttle between Gatwick and Heathrow?

Gatwick's own page lists the train via Thameslink and the Elizabeth line at about 1 hour 30 minutes and a coach at about one hour. It does not list a free shuttle between the two airports. A pre-booked car takes about 60 – 90 minutes on the M25, depending on traffic.

Do you provide child seats for a Gatwick transfer?

Infant carriers, toddler seats and boosters are available; request them when you book. Give the ages and weights so the right seats are fitted, and choose a vehicle class with space for passengers and seats together.

What is your cancellation policy?

No charge applies if you cancel more than 72 hours ahead. After that the scale is 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or if you do not show. The clock runs from the scheduled pickup, and a large event may carry a different deadline on your confirmation.
