Landing at Zayed International Airport and needing to be in Dubai is a very common itinerary: you flew into the capital's hub, your hotel, meeting or family is in Dubai, and the shortest sensible route is a road trip of roughly 135 km (84 mi) to central Dubai. Nobody wants to spend the first hour after a long-haul flight working out transport.
The notes below cover the real options from Abu Dhabi airport to Dubai, how long each takes from the arrivals door, what the road is like, and where a private transfer from Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai makes sense. When you are ready, the booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your terminal, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
How do I get from Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai?
The main ways are a pre-booked private car (about 1 h 15 – 1 h 45 door to door), the airport's AUH Express shuttle to Dubai's Ibn Battuta bus station, a metered taxi from the arrivals hall, or a bus-and-train combination. For groups, families and heavy luggage, a private car avoids every change.
Abu Dhabi's airport lies on the mainland east of the capital, closer to the highway than to the Corniche. That puts you at the start of the road to Dubai within minutes of leaving the terminal, so the road trip really begins at kerbside rather than after a long drive through town. The reverse run, from Dubai to the capital, is covered in Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi.
Distance and drive time from AUH to Dubai
Roads between the emirates are fast and well signed. Your chauffeur picks between the coastal Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) and the inland Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) depending on conditions.
- Central Dubai (Downtown, Business Bay, DIFC): about 135 km / 84 mi, usually 1 h 15 – 1 h 45.
- DXB and Deira: about 130 km / 81 mi, similar timing.
- Dubai Marina, JBR and Palm Jumeirah: noticeably shorter, about 120 km / 75 mi, because these districts are on the Abu Dhabi side of the city.
- Weekday peak into Dubai (roughly 6 am to 10 am): allow up to 2 h 15, because the last 30 km are urban expressway.
- Overnight: a landing at 2 am usually means a 1 h 10 – 1 h 15 drive.
Dubai's Salik tolls are electronic and vary by time of day. On a booked transfer they are covered by the fixed fare shown in the booker.

When the shuttle or the train is the better choice
According to Visit Abu Dhabi, the AUH Express shuttle runs 24 hours a day, all year, to the Ibn Battuta bus station in Dubai. It is the only airport-to-Dubai public link that does not require a change in Abu Dhabi first. From Ibn Battuta you continue on the Dubai Metro Red Line or by taxi, and the Dubai Airports Metro page lists the Red Line's operating pattern.
The catch for most visitors is where Ibn Battuta is. It is in the south-west of Dubai, near the Marina side, which suits a Marina or Palm hotel but adds a long Metro ride if you are staying in Deira or near the airport.
Etihad Rail has been running Abu Dhabi to Dubai passenger trains since 30 September 2026, and the ride itself is about an hour. The Visit Abu Dhabi rail page names Mohamed bin Zayed City station in Abu Dhabi and Dubai station on the other end. It is a good fit for someone who has already reached that station, but it does not stop at the airport, so from AUH you would first need a bus or taxi to the station.
Use the public routes if:
- you are travelling alone with a cabin bag and have no deadline;
- your hotel is next to Ibn Battuta or a Metro Red Line station;
- you want the lowest total outlay and accept the changes.
Pick the private car if:
- you are two or more with checked luggage or a pram;
- you land at night or in the early hours;
- you have an appointment in Dubai the same day;
- someone in the party has limited mobility.
Leaving Zayed International: terminals and kerbside
Visit Abu Dhabi describes two terminals at the airport: Terminal A, the home of Etihad Airways, and Terminal 1, which handles many regional and international flights. The taxi stand sits in the arrivals hall near the Visitor Information Centre, and numerous bus routes connect the airport with the rest of Abu Dhabi.
For a booked car, tell us your flight number at booking; the chauffeur is given the terminal and meets you on arrival. We track the flight, and free waiting time is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one. If you want a name board inside arrivals, request it when you book, and see the Abu Dhabi airport meet and greet page for how that works.
A normal sequence at arrivals: leave the aircraft, passport control, baggage, customs, then the arrivals hall. Count on 30 to 75 minutes on an ordinary day. Entry rules are set for the whole country, and the Dubai Airports passport control and visas page says citizens of Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States are eligible for a free visa on arrival. Check with your airline before you fly, because rules change.
Vehicle choices for the Dubai run
Four classes cover almost every Abu Dhabi to Dubai arrival. The Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) takes three passengers with two large and two cabin bags, and suits a business traveller. The First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) is the choice when a guest of honour is being collected. A family with strollers and checked cases wants the Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar), good for six people and up to six large bags. A team of up to twelve, with twelve bags, travels together in the Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter).
Every class is confirmed at booking as "or similar". Seats for babies, toddlers and older children are added on request, and most vehicles have water on board and a charging point for your phone. Browse the fleet page for the full range.
Where in Dubai are you going?
Downtown, Business Bay and DIFC
These districts concentrate hotels, towers and conference space. The last few kilometres can be slow on weekday afternoons, so give your exact hotel or office entrance.
Dubai Marina, JBR and Palm Jumeirah
These are the nearest major areas to Abu Dhabi, which is why the drive is shorter. Check your hotel's drop-off arrangements, particularly on Palm Jumeirah.
Deira, Dubai Creek and the airport area
This is the far end of the corridor from AUH. If you are catching a connecting flight from DXB, see DXB airport transfers for terminal details.
For hotel arrivals and city hire, see Dubai hotel transfers and car with driver in Dubai. If Abu Dhabi is also on your list, car with driver in Abu Dhabi covers hourly hire there.
Connecting to US-bound flights and other onward plans
Abu Dhabi is one of the few airports outside North America with US Customs and Border Protection preclearance; CBP lists the Abu Dhabi facility with operating hours of 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. If your journey ends at Abu Dhabi for a US-bound flight, allow time accordingly and tell the desk the departure time. A transfer from Dubai to AUH for that departure is the same route in reverse, and the Dubai to Abu Dhabi page covers it.
Cancellation, changes and who is behind the car
Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%. Major events and conventions sometimes have their own deadline; when they do, it appears on the confirmation.
In the United Arab Emirates, a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner delivers the ride. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices it, so you get one confirmation, one invoice and one 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old. Read how private airport transfers work for the full process, and browse the transfers hub or the Middle East overview for other Gulf routes. The Abu Dhabi airport page has terminal-level detail.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Abu Dhabi Airport from Dubai?
Central Dubai is about 135 km (84 mi) from Zayed International Airport by road, and DXB is about 130 km. Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah are nearer, at roughly 120 km. Normal driving time is 1 h 15 – 1 h 45.
How long does the drive from Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai take?
Plan 1 h 15 – 1 h 45 in light traffic. Weekday mornings into Dubai can stretch it to about 2 h 15. A landing in the small hours is usually the quickest drive, though you still need time to clear arrivals.
Is there a shuttle from Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai?
Yes. Visit Abu Dhabi describes the AUH Express shuttle as running 24/7, year-round, to the Ibn Battuta bus station in Dubai. From there you continue by Metro or taxi, so the total journey to a central hotel is much longer than a direct car.
Can I take the train from Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai?
Not directly. Etihad Rail's Abu Dhabi to Dubai service began on 30 September 2026, but its Abu Dhabi station is in Mohamed bin Zayed City, not at the airport. You would reach the station by road first, then ride about an hour to Dubai.
How much is a taxi from Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai?
A metered taxi charges by distance and time, so the final figure depends on your Dubai address and traffic. Our booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
Can I get a visa on arrival at Abu Dhabi Airport?
Entry policy is national. Dubai Airports lists Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States among the nationalities eligible for a free visa on arrival. Rules change, so confirm with your airline and the UAE authorities before you travel.
Does the chauffeur wait if my flight is late?
Yes. We track your flight, so the pickup moves with the actual landing. Free waiting is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic landing, counted from landing, and a name-board greeting inside arrivals is available on request.
Can I stop on the way, for example at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?
Yes. Multi-stop trips can be set up on one booking, so mention the stop at booking and the desk plans the route and any waiting time. Check the mosque's visiting hours first, because they change on Fridays.
Can the driver take me to Sharjah instead?
Yes, onward legs can be arranged on the same booking. For a short hop from Dubai to the Sharjah airport, see Dubai to Sharjah Airport.
