What are the Onroutz.ca travel transfer guides?
The travel transfer guides are plain-language explainers for planning a journey between an airport, station, hotel, port or venue. Each one compares the real options, states which is faster or simpler, and shows when booking a private transfer with Onroutz.ca is worth it.
Most travel advice stops at "take the train". A route planner needs more: which door you leave from, how long the walk to the platform is, what the last train is, what happens to a family with four suitcases at 11 pm. The guides below are written to answer those questions in order, with sources where a fact comes from an official page.
The guides are short on opinion and long on numbers. We say when public transport beats us, and we say when it does not.
The guides
Understand the service
- How private airport transfers work. What happens between booking and drop-off: flight tracking, waiting time, name boards and the fixed fare you see before you pay.
- Airport transfer vs taxi vs rideshare. A neutral comparison of a booked private car, a metered taxi and a rideshare trip, with the cases in which each one is the right answer.
- Why celebrities and VIPs book Onroutz.ca. Discretion, no photography by chauffeurs, alias name boards and NDAs on request.
Plan a specific arrival
- Arriving in Toronto: international travellers. Entry paperwork, customs, which terminal and how the airport connects to downtown.
- Toronto attractions by private car. How to see Toronto's main sights and day-trip destinations by car without worrying about parking.
- Corporate meetings, hotels and resorts. Moving groups between airports, hotels and meeting venues on one itinerary.
How to compare your options
Whatever the city, a sensible comparison asks five questions.
- How long is the whole trip, door to door? Add the walk to the exit, the wait for the train or car, the ride and the walk at the other end.
- What does it cost, and is the price fixed? A rail ticket and a metered taxi are known quantities; a surge-priced rideshare is not.
- What happens to your luggage? Stairs, platform gaps and transfers between lines are harder with large bags and children.
- What time do you land? Late-night and early-morning arrivals shrink the choices.
- How many people are travelling? One person with a backpack and four people with seven bags are different problems.
When the rail link is quick and your hotel is next to a station, the train is usually the better choice. When two or more of the questions work against the train, a private car wins.
What the public options look like at four gateways
These are published facts from the operators and authorities, "as of 2026". They show why no single answer works everywhere.
| Airport to city | Public option | Time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto Pearson to Union Station | UP Express | 28 min | See upexpress.com | Solo travellers with one bag |
| Chicago O'Hare to downtown | CTA Blue Line | 40 to 45 min | $5 or less | Light packers heading to the Loop |
| New York JFK to Manhattan | Yellow taxi flat fare | 45 to 75 min typical | $70 plus surcharges and tolls | Anyone who wants a metered, regulated ride |
| Rome Fiumicino to the centre | Taxi fixed fare inside the Aurelian Walls | Varies with city traffic | €55 including supplements | Travellers going to the historic centre |
The sources are the UP Express, the Chicago Transit Authority, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission and Aeroporti di Roma. The JFK entry excludes the New York State congestion surcharge and MTA congestion pricing toll, which apply to trips touching Manhattan south of 96th Street, plus the weekday 4 pm to 8 pm rush-hour surcharge and tips.
In every case a private transfer is a fourth option, not a replacement. Its advantage is not a lower price. It is a fixed fare quoted before you book, a driver who tracks your flight and waits, and a car sized to your party.
Entry rules to check first
The surest way to ruin an airport pickup is to arrive without the right authorisation. Before you travel, check the official page for your passport.
- Canada. Visa-exempt travellers flying in need an eTA (canada.ca).
- United States. The Visa Waiver Program uses ESTA and requires an e-Passport; U.S. Customs and Border Protection publishes the rules.
- United Kingdom. Each traveller needs an ETA or a visa, unless they hold a British or Irish passport (gov.uk).
- Schengen Europe. The Entry/Exit System is in operation, while ETIAS has not started. Check the EU's official travel site for the ETIAS date.
These rules change. They are a prompt to check, not advice for your nationality.
Timing rules of thumb
Think in buffers. For an airport pickup, our drivers track the flight and arrive for the landing time, with 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one. For other pickups the free wait is 15 minutes.
For departures, a few habits save trouble:
- Plan the pickup around the airline's check-in cut-off, not around the flight time.
- Add 30 to 60 minutes at peak hours, on Friday afternoons and on holiday weekends.
- Keep the route in mind: a bridge, a tunnel or a toll road may be the point of failure.
- Ask the desk about weather: winter driving in Canada, the Alps and Japan changes drive times.

Frequently asked questions
Are airport limousines worth the expense?
It depends on the trip. For a solo traveller with a carry-on and a fast train, the train often wins. For three or more people, heavy luggage, children, a late landing or a fixed deadline, a car with a fixed fare and flight tracking can be worth more than its ticket price.
What is the cheapest way to get from the airport to my hotel?
Usually a train or a shared bus, where one exists. Public transit has published fares, as the table above shows. Metered taxis and surge-priced rideshare can cost more at peak times. Our fixed fare is quoted in the booker before you pay, so you can compare it with the public option.
How do I pay for an airport transfer?
You pay in the booker after seeing the fixed fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle. Corporate accounts can use monthly invoicing. The booking is confirmed by the Toronto desk, which also invoices trips driven by local partners abroad, so you see one invoice.
How much should I tip a limo driver?
Customs differ. In Canada and the United States a tip is usual but discretionary, while in many other countries a service charge may already be included in prices. Check your confirmation and local custom. If you are unsure, ask the 24/7 desk before the trip.
How early should a chauffeur arrive at the airport?
For arrivals, the driver tracks the flight and is ready for the landing time. For departures, we recommend planning around the airline's check-in cut-off and adding a buffer for traffic. The desk can suggest a pickup time once you give the airport, flight and hotel.
Can I book a private transfer for another person?
Yes. Enter the passenger's name and flight number, and the confirmation goes to the person you choose. If the passenger prefers privacy, an alias name can appear on the meet-and-greet board on request. See the meet and greet hub for how it works.
Do the guides apply to every country?
They explain general principles, then link to the destination pages for local detail. Terminal names, tolls, fares and entry rules are specific to each country and change. Where a page states a fact, it names the official source, so you can check it.
Where can I get help planning a complicated trip?
Use the travel desk for multi-leg itineraries, mixed vehicle types or group movements. The FAQ page covers common questions, and the contact page reaches the 24/7 desk.
