Edmonton airport limousine and private car: what to know before you land
Edmonton International Airport is not a short taxi ride from the city. It sits in Leduc County, south of the city, beside the town of Leduc and the industrial district of Nisku. The trip to downtown Edmonton is roughly 30 km (19 mi), and in the dead of winter that is a serious drive. This is why the choice of transport matters more here than at an airport that sits next to the city.
Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is roughly 30 km (19 mi) south of downtown Edmonton, and the drive normally takes 30 to 40 minutes, longer in snow or rush hour. Onroutz.ca books a private car from arrivals with your flight tracked, an optional name-board greeting and a fixed fare quoted before you pay.
This page covers the YEG side of the trip: where to be collected, how a booked car compares with the airport's posted taxi rate and the city bus, and the longer drives that start from the terminal, such as Jasper and the oil sands. It also covers how Onroutz.ca delivers the service in Edmonton, since we are a Toronto desk that works through local partners outside Ontario.
How the service works in Edmonton
Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based private-transfer desk. In Toronto and southern Ontario the cars are our own fleet. In Edmonton, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, and it is booked, confirmed, supported and invoiced by the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto. The result is a single booking, confirmation and invoice, and a contact who answers 24/7. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, and up to seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach.
That model matters in a city like Edmonton, where local knowledge counts for a lot: winter road conditions, which entrance the hotel actually uses, and how the Henday Drive ring road changes the route across town.
Where to be collected at YEG
The airport publishes its pickup arrangements on its ground transportation page. Taxis and limousines load curbside outside Door 9 on the Arrivals level, rideshare drivers meet passengers at Arrivals Paid outside Door 10, and the airport's Ground Transportation Office is on the Arrivals level near Door 7. A free on-demand shuttle runs around Airport City from Door 9. Private cars that wait for passengers use the airport's pick-up zones, where the first Arrivals Paid minutes are charged by the airport and a free zone sits a short walk away through the parkade.
For a booked car, the pickup is arranged in advance:
- Name-board meet and greet inside arrivals, with the chauffeur holding a sign. An alias name can be used for privacy.
- Curbside pickup at the Arrivals level, with the chauffeur's details sent before you land.
- Flight tracking on every airport pickup, so an early or late arrival moves the pickup automatically.
We confirm the exact meeting point before your flight lands, because door numbers and zones can change.
Distance and drive time from YEG
| Destination | Road distance | Typical drive time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Edmonton hotels | about 30 km / 19 mi | 30–40 min | Allow 45–60 min in snow or rush hour |
| West Edmonton and the Henday | about 45–55 km / 28–34 mi | 40–55 min | Via the Henday Drive ring road |
| Leduc and Nisku | 5–15 km / 3–9 mi | 8–15 min | Airport-area hotels and business parks |
| Red Deer | about 130 km / 81 mi | 1 h 15 – 1 h 30 | Highway 2 south |
| Calgary | about 300 km / 186 mi | 3 h – 3 h 20 | Highway 2, a long-distance transfer |
| Jasper | about 365–400 km / 227–250 mi | 4 h – 4 h 45 | Highway 16 west, winter conditions vary |
The airport is in Leduc County, which is why road conditions in the open farm country around it can differ from those downtown. A white-out on Highway 2 is not uncommon in winter, and the right response is to leave earlier, not to push on.
Edmonton airport taxi, shuttle and private car compared
The airport posts a flat rate to downtown, which makes the comparison unusually straightforward. YEG lists a taxi flat rate of $62 to downtown Edmonton as of 2026 and a limousine flat rate of $71. It also names the city's bus route, ETS 747, as an alternative.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car (sedan, SUV or Sprinter) | 30–40 min to downtown | Fixed fare via the booker | Fits family luggage and gear | Groups, late flights, business, long drives |
| Airport taxi | 30–40 min | YEG posts a flat taxi rate of $62 to downtown (2026) | Fits family luggage | Short notice, no booking |
| ETS 747 city bus | Allow well over an hour, plus the walk to the stop | Standard ETS fare, see edmonton.ca | One or two bags | Solo travellers, light packers |
| Rideshare (Uber or Lyft) | 30–45 min | Surge-priced at peak times | Depends on the car | Quick, one-off trips |
| Hotel shuttle (Leduc and Nisku hotels) | 5–15 min | Offered free by some hotels | Light luggage | Overnight at an airport-area hotel |
A shuttle to Edmonton airport is a different problem from a shuttle from it. Many hotels in Leduc and Nisku run courtesy vans, and the airport lists them. The city bus works if you are patient and travelling light. For everything else, the choice is a taxi at the posted rate or a booked car.
When the taxi or bus is the better choice, and when the car wins
Be plain about it: the airport's flat-rate taxi is a good deal if you are alone, land during the day, and are going straight to a downtown hotel. It requires no booking, and the fare is known. The bus is the cheapest option for a patient solo traveller.
A booked private car is the better choice when:
- Three or more people travel together, because one vehicle replaces several fares.
- You are carrying skis, golf bags, hockey equipment or large cases.
- Your flight lands late or in bad weather, and you want a driver who has tracked it.
- Your destination is a long way out, such as Jasper, Red Deer or an oil sands site.
- Children need car seats and a calm hand-off.
- You want a name-board greeting rather than a queue.
Winter driving and why it matters in Edmonton
Edmonton is one of the coldest big cities in Canada, and the airport sits in open country. Blowing snow, freezing fog and black ice are routine in winter, and the drive between YEG and downtown can take 20 or 30 minutes longer than in July. What that means in practice:
- Allow extra time for any pickup in winter, particularly early departures.
- Tell the booker if your flight is likely to be rerouted, because a diversion changes the pickup.
- Dress for the platform: the walk from the terminal to the kerb is short, but the wind at the pickup can be sharp.
A professional chauffeur does not hurry on a bad road, and a fixed fare removes any pressure to.
Business, energy and executive travel
Edmonton is a government, energy and health-sciences city. Executives fly in for meetings at the downtown towers, the Ice District, the Edmonton Convention Centre and the university hospitals. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing let one assistant book for a visiting team, and multi-leg itineraries, for example airport to hotel, hotel to a site visit and back to the airport, sit on one booking.
For executive arrivals, an Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) or a First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) carries up to 3 passengers. A Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) carries up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags, and an Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Vehicles are shown "or similar", with the model confirmed at booking. Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch limousine and armoured vehicles are on request, subject to availability at booking.
A chauffeur will not photograph you or mention your trip online, and NDAs can be signed on request. We are a transport service, not a security company: there are no armed drivers or bodyguards, and we work alongside a client's own security team. See the fleet page and the travel desk for corporate set-up.
Long drives from Edmonton International
Many YEG passengers do not stay in Edmonton. The main longer trips:
- Jasper is roughly 365 km west on Highway 16 and takes about four hours or more in good conditions. The airport itself lists a daily shuttle for this route, which shows the demand, and a private car runs on your schedule rather than a fixed timetable.
- Calgary is about 300 km south. A private car is a real alternative for a group that does not want a domestic flight. See Calgary International for the other end of the journey.
- Oil sands sites such as Fort McMurray are far to the north, and a scheduled corporate transfer is usually arranged with a company account.
- Red Deer and the central Alberta towns are a short run down the QEII.
For the intercity picture across the country, visit the routes hub, and the Canada overview lists every airport we serve. The Vancouver airport page covers the coast, and the Winnipeg airport page the prairies to the east.
Entry rules for international visitors
Visa-exempt visitors flying into Canada need an electronic travel authorization (eTA), which costs CAN$7 and is applied for online. See the official eTA page. If you connect through Toronto, Vancouver or Calgary, you clear customs there and arrive in Edmonton as a domestic passenger, so your flight number and arrival time should be the Edmonton leg.
Booking, fares and cancellation
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. A hotel in the Ice District and a home in St. Albert are different trips and different fares. Cancellation, counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%. If your trip falls during a major event, check the confirmation: the deadline may differ. Payment and changes are covered in the FAQ, and the airport transfers hub explains how we handle airports worldwide.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Edmonton airport from downtown?
YEG is roughly 30 km (19 mi) south of downtown Edmonton. The drive usually takes 30 to 40 minutes and can double in a winter storm or rush hour. The airport is in Leduc County, so the final stretch is open highway.
How much is a taxi from Edmonton airport to downtown?
YEG's own ground transportation page lists a flat rate of $62 for a taxi to downtown Edmonton as of 2026, and $71 for an airport limousine. The rideshare price varies with demand. Our private-car fare is fixed and shown before you pay.
Is there a bus from Edmonton airport to the city?
Yes. YEG names the City of Edmonton ETS 747 bus. It is cheaper than a car but slower, and works best with one bag. Check edmonton.ca for the current schedule and fare before you travel.
Where do I find my limo at Edmonton airport?
Taxis and limousines load outside Door 9 on the Arrivals level, and rideshare drivers meet passengers outside Door 10. For a booked car, we confirm the exact meeting point and send the chauffeur's details before you land.
Are airport limousines worth the expense?
They are worth it for groups of three or more, winter arrivals, heavy bags and long drives such as Jasper. For a solo traveller going downtown with one bag, the flat-rate taxi or the bus is a fair alternative.
What is the cheapest way to get from the airport to Edmonton?
The ETS 747 bus is the least expensive. If you are alone, the airport's flat-rate taxi gives a known cost. A private car becomes better value when three or more people share one fare.
How much does an airport limousine cost in Edmonton?
The booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. It depends on the address, the vehicle class and the hour, so we do not publish a rate here.
Can you take me from Edmonton airport to Jasper?
Yes. Jasper is roughly 365 km and four hours or more from YEG. We use sedans, SUVs and Sprinters with space for luggage and gear, and we plan for winter conditions on Highway 16.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Every airport pickup is tracked against your flight. Free waiting is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, counted from landing, so a late flight does not cost you your ride.
