What is the best way to get from Malpensa to Milan?

Malpensa is about 50 km north-west of central Milan, and there are two sensible ways in: the Malpensa Express train, which takes about 50 minutes to Milano Centrale, and a private car, which drives door to door in roughly 50 to 80 minutes depending on traffic. The car wins with luggage, groups or lake destinations.

Most Milan airport transfers start at Malpensa (MXP), the city's intercontinental airport. It sits in the municipalities of Somma Lombardo and Ferno, in the province of Varese, which is why the drive is a real one rather than a hop across town. Milan's other airports are closer to the centre, but Malpensa takes the long-haul traffic, including most flights from North America and the Gulf.

This guide sets out what each mode gives you, then explains where a private transfer is the better answer. It sits within our Europe network and the global airport transfers hub.

Check your fixed fare

Malpensa at a glance: two terminals, one free shuttle

Malpensa has Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The airport runs a free shuttle between the two, so the terminal printed on your ticket matters.

For a private pickup the terminal is the first detail we confirm. Your chauffeur is waiting in the right arrivals hall, not guessing. If your plans change on the day, the desk can redirect the driver while you are still in the air.

  • Location: about 50 km north-west of central Milan. Distance estimates by road run from roughly 47 to 51 km.
  • Terminals: T1 and T2, linked by a free shuttle bus.
  • Rail: the Malpensa Express runs from both terminals into the city.
  • Roads: the A8 and A4 motorways connect towards Milan, with the A9 serving Como and the lakes.

How a private Malpensa pickup works

Your flight is tracked from departure to gate, so a delayed arrival or an early landing moves the chauffeur with it. Waiting is included: 60 minutes after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one. For a flight from Toronto, New York or Dubai, that hour covers passport control and the baggage belt, which at Malpensa can take a while on a busy morning bank of arrivals.

On request, the chauffeur holds a name board in arrivals, with an alias in place of your name if you want privacy. Luggage goes into the car, and you leave directly for the hotel. Vehicles carry water and phone charging in most cases, and a child, toddler or booster seat can be requested at booking.

If you have a connection that matters, say a client dinner on the night you land, ask us to build the timing back from the dinner. A multi-leg itinerary can combine the airport pickup, a hotel drop and an evening car on one booking and one invoice.

When the Malpensa Express is the better choice

If you are travelling alone, staying near Milano Centrale, Milano Cadorna or the Porta Garibaldi district, and you have one case, take the train. It leaves the airport on a fixed timetable, it does not depend on the A8 or on morning commuter traffic, and the journey is about 50 minutes in each direction. On a weekday rush hour that reliability is real value.

The train also suits early-morning arrivals when you are going straight into a meeting near a station and do not want to wait for a car.

There are some points to check. The service runs from both Malpensa terminals, but Terminal 2 adds a few minutes. Platforms at Milano Centrale are a walk from the metro and taxi ranks, and the first and last trains matter if you land very late. A late arrival after the last service means a taxi or a pre-booked car regardless.

When a private car wins

A private car is the better answer in these situations:

  • Three or more travellers. The cost per head of a sedan or SUV drops quickly against individual tickets, and everyone keeps their luggage.
  • Heavy or awkward baggage. Fashion trips and trade-fair trips often mean garment bags, sample cases and display material.
  • Children or older relatives. No platform changes, no stairs, and a seat that fits the child.
  • Lake destinations. The Malpensa Express does not go to Como or Maggiore. A car does.
  • Late arrivals. A flight that lands after the final train does not leave you in a taxi queue.
  • Business schedules. A fixed pickup time at the other end, with a chauffeur who knows the district.

Beyond Milan: Lake Como, Lake Maggiore and the north

Malpensa is closer to the lakes than most visitors expect, and the lakes are a large part of why people fly here.

DestinationAbout (km)Usual drive timeNote
Milan city centre5050 to 80 minHeavy on weekday mornings
Lake Maggiore, Stresa area25 to 4030 to 45 minNearest big lake, depends on the shore
Como town5055 to 75 minA9 motorway, the lake starts here
Bellagio and the central lake75 to 851 h 10 to 1 h 40Add time in summer on the last stretch
Bergamo area90 to 1001 h 15 to 1 h 45Via the A4

All distances here are approximate road figures and depend on the exact address. On Lake Como the final stretch along the lakeside roads is slow in summer, and weekend traffic from Milan adds to it. If you are staying on a lake for several days, consider a private transfer by the hour for lake hopping rather than hiring a separate car for each leg.

Trade fairs, fashion weeks and Milan timing

Milan is a trade-fair city, and the calendar changes how long the road takes. Fashion weeks are normally held twice a year, usually in late February and late September, and the big furniture and design events fill the hotels in spring. At those times, the roads between the airport and the fairgrounds and central hotels are heavier, and hotel drop-off points are crowded.

Our advice is simple. On the days that matter, book a pickup that allows extra margin, and avoid scheduling a hard meeting less than two hours after landing. For fair arrivals, check which hall or entrance your badge requires; we can drop you at a specific gate if you supply it at booking.

Central Milan also restricts traffic in some areas with cameras and permits. Chauffeurs working these routes know the approved drop-off points near the major hotels, so you do not need to plan the final few hundred metres yourself. If your hotel is in the pedestrian streets around the Duomo, expect to be dropped at the nearest permitted point and walked in by the hotel porter.

For arrivals into the station district, our Milano Centrale rail transfer page covers the pick-up points at the station itself.

Reserve your car

Choosing a vehicle for the Milan run

Fashion and fair travellers tend to choose by luggage, not by head count. The Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) fits 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 cabin bags, while the First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) gives the same three a quieter, roomier cabin. Garment bags and sample cases usually justify the Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar), good for 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags. Delegations and wedding parties use the Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter), with room for 12 passengers and 12 bags. Mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats, Specialty cars such as a Maybach, a Rolls-Royce, a stretch limousine or an armoured vehicle are on request, subject to availability confirmed at booking. Models are "or similar" and confirmed when you book.

See the fleet page for details of every class.

Who drives you in Italy

Milan is outside Toronto and the GTA, so the car and chauffeur belong to a vetted, licensed and commercially insured Italian partner. The desk behind them does not change: Onroutz.ca in Toronto books the trip, confirms it, backs you up on the day and sends a single invoice, with one 24/7 contact. Partner cars are no more than 4 model years old, up to 7 for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach. Nothing here means we own vehicles or offices in Italy.

Entry rules for Italy

Italy sits inside the Schengen Area, so North American visitors on short stays normally travel visa-free. The EU is, however, rolling out an Entry/Exit System that records non-EU travellers at the border, plus a pre-travel authorisation called ETIAS. Dates and procedures have changed more than once, so check the EU's official page, travel-europe.europa.eu, before you fly. Longer queues at passport control are a reason to keep the waiting time on your booking.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Malpensa airport from Milan?

About 50 km north-west of central Milan. Estimates by road run from roughly 47 to 51 km depending on your destination in the city. The drive usually takes 50 to 80 minutes, and the Malpensa Express train covers the journey to Milano Centrale in about 50 minutes.

Which terminal will I arrive at, Terminal 1 or 2?

It depends on your airline and flight, and it is printed on your booking. Give us the flight number and we match the pickup to the correct arrivals hall. A free shuttle links the two terminals if you end up in the wrong one.

Is the Malpensa Express better than a private car?

For one person going to Centrale or Cadorna, often yes: it takes about 50 minutes and ignores traffic. For three or more people, heavy luggage, children, a lake destination or a late landing, a pre-booked private car is the more practical choice.

Can you take me from Malpensa to Lake Como or Lake Maggiore?

Yes. Lake Maggiore is about 25 to 40 km from the airport depending on the shore, and Como town is about 50 km. Bellagio and other central-lake villages are about 75 to 85 km. The booker shows a fixed fare for your exact address.

How long will the chauffeur wait at Malpensa?

Waiting is free for an hour after an international touchdown and for 30 minutes after a domestic one, and the clock runs from the real landing time. A late flight does not change the booking. If passport queues hold you up after a long-haul arrival, the allowance still covers it, and you can message the desk from the baggage hall to say you are on the way.

Do you provide child seats and meet and greet at Malpensa?

Yes. Ask for a child, toddler or booster seat when you book. A chauffeur with a name board in arrivals is available on request, using an alias if you want your name kept off the board. Tell us each child's age and weight when you book so the right seat is fitted before the car reaches arrivals.

Can I book a car from Milan back to Malpensa?

Yes. Return transfers are booked the same way, with the pickup time set from your flight and the traffic window. A multi-leg booking can cover your arrival, hotel transfers in Milan and your departure on one invoice. Give us your flight number and terminal, and we will work out when to collect you from your hotel.
