What is the best way to get from Vancouver Airport to Whistler?
For most visitors the best way is a pre-booked private car on the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99): about 135 km from YVR to Whistler Village, usually 2 to 2 h 30, longer in snow or on a ski-weekend afternoon. Scheduled coaches and shared shuttles cost less per seat but follow fixed times.
Whistler is one of the easier mountain resorts to reach from a major airport, and one of the least forgiving when a plan falls apart. The road is the only road. A single collision near Squamish can close Highway 99 for hours, and in the cold season weather can change faster than a timetable. This page sets out the real choices between YVR and the village, gives honest numbers, and explains where a pre-booked transfer, delivered by a local partner and run through the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto, is worth having.
If you also plan to explore the city before you head north, see the Vancouver YVR airport transfer page.

There is no regular passenger rail to Whistler. The Rocky Mountaineer stops at Whistler on its Vancouver–Jasper tour route, but that is a tour product, not a transfer. Air options exist, because Whistler has a heliport and a seaplane base at Green Lake, though flights depend on weather and visibility.
When a coach or shuttle is the better choice
Take a coach or shared van if you are travelling alone, you have one or two bags, your flight lands in the middle of the day and you do not mind waiting for the next departure. The saving is real, and the highway drive is somebody else's problem. Shared vans work well for people who are happy to see other hotels first and not worried about the arrival time.
Be sober about the limits. Coaches and shared vans follow set times, so a flight that lands late or a bag that goes missing means a long wait for the next one. Ski and snowboard bags, golf clubs or a bike box may need extra space or be refused at busy times. Hotel drop-offs on shared vans can add an hour.
When a private transfer wins
- Family or group. Four people with four suitcases and two ski bags fit in a Luxury SUV (up to six passengers, 5 to 6 large bags). An Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags.
- Late flights. After a long-haul landing at 8 or 9 pm, a night drive on Highway 99 is no time to start a rental car. The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits, and drives.
- Children. Child seats are on request: say at booking whether you need an infant, toddler or booster seat.
- Heavy gear. Ski bags, board bags and bike boxes ride with you, not in a separate hold.
- Tight check-in. If your hotel or chalet has a check-in window, a fixed pickup lets you tell them when you will arrive.
- Privacy. A closed cabin, no shared stops and chauffeurs who do not photograph clients or post about trips.
The Sea to Sky Highway, kilometre by kilometre
The road is worth knowing because it explains the time estimates.
YVR to Horseshoe Bay (about 35 km). Your route threads through Vancouver and the North Shore. Rush hour matters here: the bridges and the approach to Horseshoe Bay can add 30 to 45 minutes between 3 pm and 6 pm.
Horseshoe Bay to Squamish (about 45 km). Highway 99 climbs along Howe Sound with long views and some curves. Britannia Beach and Shannon Falls are on the way. The Sea to Sky Gondola sits two kilometres south of Squamish, which its operator describes as a 45-minute drive from Vancouver.
Squamish to Whistler (about 55 km). The highway turns inland through Garibaldi Provincial Park country, past Brandywine Falls, Function Junction, Creekside and finally the village. The hills here have the heaviest snowfall and the biggest visibility changes.
A single lane in each direction carries most of the way. When there is an incident, there may be no alternative route, and the 24/7 desk watches DriveBC for closures so we can advise before you leave the airport. The Resort Municipality of Whistler also links its winter driving guidance and live Highway 99 conditions.
Winter driving and the BC tire rules
British Columbia sets winter tire and chain rules for designated highways, and Highway 99 is one of them. DriveBC has a dedicated section on the winter tire requirements for the Sea to Sky route, which gives the dates and the markings the law accepts. Vehicles used for the transfer must comply, and the compliance is the partner's responsibility, not yours. If you rent a car yourself, you carry it: check the tires before you leave the rental lot, because a roadside check can turn you around.
Practical advice for a winter transfer: do not schedule the last pickup of the day close to a deadline, allow extra time for snow, and let the desk know if your flight is delayed so the pickup can slide.
Seasons in Whistler and what they mean for the transfer
Winter. Whistler Blackcomb has 2026/27 season passes on sale, and the resort announces opening dates on its own site. Weekend afternoons northbound and Sunday afternoons southbound are the slowest times on the highway.
Summer. Whistler Blackcomb lists the Peak 2 Peak gondola, the bike park, lakes and about 40 km of paved valley trails. Crankworx and the Whistler Village Beer Festival are among the festivals that bring heavier traffic.
Shoulder seasons. April–May and October–November are quieter, but some lifts and restaurants close. Check your hotel's open hours when you arrange a late arrival.
Whistler to Vancouver airport: getting back for your flight
Searches for a shuttle from Whistler to Vancouver Airport come from people with a flight to catch, and the planning is different from the outbound trip. Work backwards from your departure time.
- Subtract 3 hours for an international flight (2 hours for a domestic one) for check-in and security at YVR.
- Subtract 2 h 30 for the drive. In winter, subtract 3 h 30.
- Subtract 30 minutes of buffer if it is a Sunday afternoon or a long weekend.
For a 4 pm international flight, a pickup around 9:30 to 10 am in Whistler is realistic. Book the return in advance, since a same-morning request in peak season may not find a vehicle.
Choosing your vehicle

Models are "or similar" and confirmed at booking; Specialty cars such as a Maybach, a Rolls-Royce, a stretch limousine or an armoured vehicle are on request, subject to availability confirmed at booking. Water and phone charging are provided in most vehicles. Tell us about skis, snowboards and bikes when you book, because that can change the vehicle we recommend. See the fleet page.
Booking, fixed fare and cancellation
The booker asks for your YVR flight, the Whistler address, the number of passengers and the equipment. It then shows the fixed all-in fare before you pay. Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice has no charge; 72 hours or less is 10%; 48 hours or less is 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%. Big events and peak holiday periods may carry a different deadline, printed on your confirmation.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Whistler from Vancouver Airport?
Whistler is about 125 km from Vancouver; from YVR the drive to Whistler Village is about 135 km. In dry daytime conditions allow 2 h to 2 h 30. In snow, on a Friday afternoon in ski season, or after an incident, allow 3 to 4 hours.
Is there a shuttle from Vancouver Airport to Whistler?
Yes. Scheduled airport coaches and shared shuttle vans run from YVR and from downtown Vancouver, at times set by the operator. They suit solo travellers. For families, groups and ski gear, a pre-booked private transfer follows your flight rather than a schedule.
Is there a train to Whistler?
There is no regular passenger rail. The Rocky Mountaineer stops at Whistler on its Vancouver–Jasper tour route, but it is a tour product, not a transfer. Most visitors drive, ride a coach, or book a private transfer.
Do I need winter tires to drive to Whistler?
British Columbia sets winter tire and chain rules for designated highways, including the Sea to Sky route, and DriveBC publishes the dates and accepted tire markings. A partner vehicle used for your transfer must comply. If you rent a car, check the tires yourself.
How much is an Uber from Vancouver Airport to Whistler?
Ride-hailing prices depend on demand, distance and time of day, and an intercity run of about 135 km is not a typical app trip. The factors are surge and return distance. The booker shows our fixed fare for your exact trip before you pay.
How long should I leave to get from Whistler back to YVR?
Allow about 2 h 30 for the drive in good conditions and 3 h 30 in winter, then add 3 hours at the airport for an international flight or 2 hours for a domestic one. Add 30 minutes on Sundays and long weekends.
How much should I tip a limo driver in Canada?
A tip of 15 to 20 per cent is the common range for a chauffeured trip in Canada. Check your booking for any gratuity already included, and add a little more for help with several ski bags or an unusually long wait.
Can the chauffeur wait if my flight is late?
Yes. The chauffeur tracks your flight, so the pickup follows your actual landing time. After landing, 60 minutes of waiting are included for international arrivals and 30 minutes for domestic. The 24/7 desk advises if a longer delay changes the plan.
