How do you get from Delhi airport to Agra?
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport is about 220 km (137 mi) from Agra, mainly on the Yamuna Expressway, and the drive normally takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours. The Gatimaan train is quicker on the rails but starts in the city. A private car goes from the arrivals hall to your Agra hotel or straight to the Taj Mahal.
Agra is the home of the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and a string of Mughal monuments, and it sits about three to four hours south-east of Delhi on the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh. Most visitors from overseas treat it as the second stop of a Delhi trip, often as part of the Golden Triangle with Jaipur.
The route is easy to describe and easy to get wrong. Distances differ depending on where in Delhi you start, the expressway has its own rules, and the monument closes on one weekday. Plan around these facts and the trip works well. Ignore them and you can arrive at the Taj on the one day it is shut.
Distance and drive time
Transfer operators and travel sites quote between roughly 210 and 225 km from Delhi's airport to the Taj Mahal, which is why we show "about 220 km". The variation comes from the starting terminal, the side of the city you leave from and the destination in Agra.
Typical drive times:
- Early morning, weekday: about 3.5 hours with a clear run.
- Midday and weekends: 4 hours or more. Weekend traffic on the expressway can add significant time.
- Winter mornings: fog can reduce visibility and slow traffic on the expressway. Leave later or earlier than the fog window and tell the driver your flexibility.
- Monsoon: heavy rain slows the road and delays the journey.
The first 40 to 60 minutes out of Delhi are often the slowest, because the airport area, the ring roads and the link to the expressway are busy. After that, the expressway is faster and steadier.
The Yamuna Expressway
The expressway runs from Greater Noida to Agra and is 165 km long, according to the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority. It is a controlled-access toll road, with tolls collected electronically by FASTag. Posted speed limits for cars have been reported at 100 km/h, and winter reductions are applied in some years, so your driver follows the signs in force that day. Cameras record speed at several points.
Because the expressway is a toll road, drivers need working FASTag equipment, and the all-in fare you see in our booker covers it. Service areas along the route offer fuel and basic food; a stop of 15 to 20 minutes is normal on a four-hour drive.
The expressway starts at Greater Noida, so the journey begins with the Delhi–Noida corridor. Delhi's airport is on the western side of the city, which makes the early part of the trip long. For very early flights, a car that leaves directly from the arrivals hall saves the cost of a separate city transfer.
The mode comparison
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gatimaan Express (Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantt) | About 1 h 40 on the train, plus getting to the station and from Agra Cantt to the hotel; about 4 to 5 h in all from the airport | Public train fares; check IRCTC | Luggage racks | One or two travellers, light bags |
| Other intercity trains | 2.5 to 4 h on the train, plus both ends | Public train fares | Racks | Flexible travellers |
| Intercity coach | 4 to 6 h including the city leg | Per-seat fare | Limited | Budget-minded |
| Airport prepaid or metered taxi | 3.5 to 5 h | Metered or agreed | 2 large bags | Short notice, 1 to 3 travellers |
| App-booked outstation cab | 3.5 to 5 h | Dynamic, quoted at booking | 2 large bags | Individuals comfortable with an app |
| Pre-booked private transfer | 3.5 to 4.5 h from the arrivals hall | Fixed fare via booker, quoted before you pay | 2 to 12 bags by vehicle | Families, groups, jet-lagged arrivals, door-to-door |
The Gatimaan Express is the quick option on the rails: timetable listings show a morning departure from Hazrat Nizamuddin and a journey of about 1 hour 40 minutes to Agra Cantt, with no Friday service. Those details come from timetable sites, so confirm days and times on IRCTC before you plan around them. The train also starts in the city, so a flight landing late rules it out.
When the train wins, and when the car does
Be straightforward: if you are travelling alone or as a pair with light bags, staying in central Delhi and fit enough for station platforms, the train is excellent. It is fast and avoids the road.
The car wins in these situations:
- You land at the airport. Reaching Hazrat Nizamuddin from the airport adds a transfer in the city, and the train timetable limits your arrival time.
- Three or more people. One vehicle replaces several tickets.
- Luggage. A Luxury SUV seats up to 6 with 5 to 6 large bags; an Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 with 12 bags.
- Children. Child seats come in infant, toddler and booster sizes and can be added to the booking.
- Stops. A private car can stop at a roadside haveli, a temple, or a market on the way, and wait for you at the Taj.
- Late or early arrivals. The driver tracks your flight and the pickup adjusts to the actual landing time.
Taj Mahal visiting rules that shape your plan
The Taj Mahal's official site sets out the rules that matter for timing. Visiting hours run from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, and the monument is closed on Fridays. You can visit on every other weekday.
Entry for foreign tourists is Rs. 1,100, inclusive of Archaeological Survey of India and Agra Development Authority fees, with an optional Rs. 200 to enter the main mausoleum, as published on the official Taj Mahal site (as of 2026). Children under 15 are free. Online buyers receive a discount of Rs. 50 per foreigner ticket, and tickets can be bought online through the portals linked from the Archaeological Survey of India site or at the window.
The same site lists prohibited items: drone cameras are strictly prohibited in and around the monument, eatables are not allowed inside, and tripods are not allowed inside without permission from the ASI. Night viewing is available on five nights a month, around the full moon, from 8.00 pm to 11.59 pm in eight batches of up to 50 people, booked through the ASI ticketing website.
These facts affect transport directly. A sunrise visit means leaving Delhi the afternoon before, or staying overnight in Agra. A Friday arrival means the Taj is closed, so plan Agra Fort and the other sites instead. A night viewing means arranging the car around a full-moon date.
Day trip or overnight?
A same-day return from Delhi means about 440 km of driving and 7 to 9 hours in the car. It is possible, and many visitors do it, but it leaves little time at the monument and little margin for the traffic on the way back. The day works best if you start at first light and keep the itinerary to the Taj and Agra Fort.
An overnight in Agra changes the trip. You can arrive in the afternoon, visit Agra Fort in the late light, see the Taj at sunrise the next morning and return to Delhi after lunch. If you are flying out of Delhi the next evening, leave plenty of margin; the drive back is as long as the drive out.
Fatehpur Sikri, the abandoned Mughal capital, lies about 40 km west of Agra and is a common add-on. A private car can include it on the way, and the driver will tell you how long it adds. If you want a hotel stay in Agra or Delhi planned alongside the drive, the hotel transfers hub and the airport transfers hub show how the pieces fit, and the guides section collects planning pages for longer trips.
Delhi airport terminals and arrival
Delhi's airport has more than one terminal, and they are not close together. Terminal 3 is the main international terminal and has the metro link; Terminal 1 sits several kilometres away and has no direct link to it. Tell us your airline and flight number when you book and the desk confirms the terminal, so the driver is at the correct arrivals door.
The driver tracks the flight and meets you in arrivals. A name-board meet and greet is available on request, with an alias for privacy. Waiting is 60 minutes free after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one and 15 on other pickups, which matters in Delhi where immigration and baggage queues can be long. See the Delhi airport guide for terminal details and the Mumbai airport guide if your trip begins there.
Near the Taj: how cars reach the monument
Motor vehicles are restricted close to the Taj Mahal to protect the monument. Cars park at designated lots and visitors walk or use shared electric transport for the last section. Your driver will explain the arrangement on the day and tell you where to meet at the end of the visit. Check with the ASI or the Taj's official site for the current arrangements before you go.
Plan to leave bags in the car or at your hotel. Tripods and food are not allowed inside, and security checks take time. A driver who waits at the designated lot holds the bags and your water.
How the service works in India
In India, a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner supplies the car and the chauffeur. The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto books and confirms the ride, supports you 24/7 and issues the invoice, which means a single point of contact from booking to drop-off. No partner vehicle on this route is older than four model years.
You choose a vehicle class from the fleet page, and the booker shows a fixed all-in fare for the pickup, drop-off and vehicle you select, ahead of payment. What happens in the car stays there: no client photos, no social posts, and an NDA if you want one. For more routes in the region, browse the Asia-Pacific guide and the transfers hub, or add a meet and greet to your arrival.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Agra from Delhi airport?
About 220 km (137 mi) by road, mostly on the Yamuna Expressway. Operator pages quote between roughly 210 and 225 km depending on the terminal and the destination in Agra. The drive normally takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
Is the Taj Mahal open on Fridays?
No. The official Taj Mahal site says the monument is closed on Fridays and open on other weekdays. Visiting hours run from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset. Plan your Agra day around that closure.
How much does a taxi from Delhi airport to Agra cost?
It depends on the vehicle, the time and the booking method. Airport taxis, outstation cab apps and private operators each price differently, and there is no single published fare. Our booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
Is the train better than a car?
The Gatimaan Express is fast on the rails and is a good choice for one or two travellers with light bags. A car is better from the airport, for groups, for luggage, for late arrivals and for anyone who wants door-to-door service.
How much is the Taj Mahal ticket for foreigners?
The official site lists Rs. 1,100 for foreign tourists, inclusive of ASI and ADA fees, plus an optional Rs. 200 for the main mausoleum (as of 2026). Children under 15 are free, and online purchase earns a small discount.
Can we do Delhi to Agra and back in one day?
Yes, but it is about 440 km of driving and 7 to 9 hours in the car. Start at first light and keep the itinerary short. An overnight in Agra gives you a better chance of a sunrise visit and a calmer day.
Can you add Fatehpur Sikri or other stops?
Yes. Fatehpur Sikri is about 40 km west of Agra and is a common addition. Tell the desk what you want when you book, and the driver will plan the stops and the timing.
Can the driver wait while I visit the Taj Mahal?
Yes. The driver waits at the designated parking area while you visit, and you agree a meeting time before you go in. Visits usually take a few hours, longer if you add Agra Fort. Tell the desk how long you plan to stay so the booking covers the waiting time.
