Milano Centrale opens onto Piazza Duca d'Aosta, a short way north-east of the cathedral, and it works like a small city: high-speed trains to Rome, Florence, Venice and Turin, regional lines to the lakes, international services into Switzerland, two Metro lines underneath and a bus terminal alongside. It is a station you land in tired, usually carrying more than you planned. This page deals with the practical question that follows: how do you get from Centrale to Malpensa, to Linate, or up to Lake Como, and when does it make sense to book a private car from Onroutz.ca instead of changing trains again?
What are the main trips from Milano Centrale by car?
Three: Malpensa, about 50 km and 45 to 75 minutes; Linate, about 10 km and 25 to 40 minutes; and Lake Como, from about 45 km to Como itself and about 75 km to Bellagio, 1 hour to 1 hour 45 minutes. A private car takes you from the station to the door in all three cases.
The numbers shift with traffic, time of year and the day of the week. Milan has a busy ring road, with peaks on weekday mornings and evenings and heavier traffic during Design Week and the fashion weeks. A good rule is to take the upper end of the range if you have a flight to catch.
Milano Centrale to Malpensa: train or car?
Malpensa (MXP) is Milan's main intercontinental airport, about 50 km to the north-west. The Malpensa Express train runs from Milano Centrale to the airport in around 51 minutes according to Trenord's published timetable, with departures at roughly :25 and :55 past the hour, a first train around 05:25 and a last around 23:25. It serves both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, so check your train's destination before you board.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car (Onroutz.ca partner) | 45–75 min | Fixed fare via booker, quoted before you pay | Sedan: 2 large + 2 cabin; SUV: 5–6 large; van: 12 | Early flights, groups, hotels away from stations |
| Malpensa Express train | About 51 min plus walk | Single ticket price set by the rail operator | Carry your own on and off | Daytime flights, light bags, travellers on schedule |
| Airport coach from the station area | About 60–75 min | Ticket set by the coach operator | Hold storage, loading queue | Travellers who prefer a road service on a budget |
| Taxi | 45–75 min | Metered or fixed, regulated by the city | 2 to 3 bags | One-off trips with no booking |
When is the train better? When your flight is in the middle of the day, you are travelling light, and you do not mind the queue at the ticket machine. It is regular, it ignores traffic, and you can predict the time to the minute.
When is the car better? When your flight is before 07:00 or after the last train, when you have a group, when bags are heavy, or when you are leaving from a hotel rather than the station. The Malpensa Express starts at Centrale, which means anyone staying elsewhere needs a metro leg first.
Milano Centrale to Linate
Linate (LIN) is much closer to the city, about 10 km east, and handles mostly European and domestic flights. A private car usually takes 25 to 40 minutes, depending on the hour. The M4 metro line also links Linate to the centre, but it does not stop at Centrale, so you will change lines. For short trips like this one, a car's advantage is simplicity rather than speed.
For connections to Bergamo (Orio al Serio), about 55 km to the east, a car is generally the most practical option from Centrale, taking 50 to 80 minutes. Ask for it at booking and give the flight number.
Milano Centrale to Lake Como
Lake Como is the day trip and the hotel destination that makes Centrale more than a city station. A direct regional train takes about 40 minutes to Como San Giovanni over a route of about 47 km, according to Trenord; Trenitalia's direct service is quoted at 36 minutes. Those are the quick, cheap options for Como town.
The lake is a different matter. Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Tremezzo and the villages on the shore have no direct rail link. Public transport means a train to Varenna then a ferry, or a train to Como followed by a bus or ferry, and takes around two hours with luggage. By car the trip to Bellagio is about 75 km and 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45 minutes depending on traffic, and the car drops you at the hotel door or at the nearest road access point.
| Destination | Distance (about) | Car time | Public alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Como (town) | 45 km / 28 mi | 50–75 min | Direct regional train, about 40 min |
| Cernobbio | 50 km / 31 mi | 55–80 min | Train to Como, then local bus |
| Bellagio | 75 km / 47 mi | 75–105 min | Train to Varenna and ferry, or Como and ferry |
| Varenna | 65 km / 40 mi | 70–100 min | Direct train on the eastern shore |
| Menaggio / Tremezzo | 85 km / 53 mi | 90–120 min | Como and bus or ferry |
Sample timing for a lake day: a high-speed train from Rome or Florence arrives at Centrale at 10:30, the car meets you on arrival, and you are checked in by lunch at a lakeside hotel. On the return, the car brings you back to Centrale or on to the airport with a margin built in. Mention any boat or ferry reservation at booking so the plan matches.
When a private car wins from the station
- Heavy luggage. Milan travellers often arrive with fashion-trade or shopping bags, trade-fair cases, or ski equipment. A Luxury SUV holds up to six passengers and five or six large bags.
- Groups. An Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 with 12 bags; mini-coaches and coaches run from 20 to 56 seats on request.
- Early airport runs. The first Malpensa Express leaves from Centrale in the early morning, so before that the car is the only dependable option.
- A lake hotel. The car takes you to the property, not a pier.
- Children and seats. Child, toddler and booster seats can be added on request.
- A tight onward connection. Flights, a fair or a meeting all work better with a driver who tracks the arrival of your train.
- Discretion. A quiet vehicle suits clients who arrive for meetings in the fashion and design districts.
Hotels in the centre, Area C and where the car stops
Milan runs a congestion zone, Area C, in the historic centre inside the old bastions. According to the Area C site, restrictions apply on weekdays from 7:30 to 19:30, weekends and public holidays are exempt, and a day ticket is listed at 7.5 euros as of 2026, with the zone covering about 8.2 square kilometres. Milano Centrale itself lies outside; hotels around Brera, the Duomo and the Quadrilatero lie inside. For a private transfer, the local partner manages that on the day, and the fixed fare shown in the booker is all-in. Ask the hotel about the best vehicle approach, as some have access from a side street and not the main one.
Events and fairs: when the city fills up
Milan's big trade events change everything. The furniture fair and Design Week in spring, and the fashion weeks in late winter and early autumn, push hotel occupancy and road traffic to their annual peaks. Fairs are held at Fiera Milano in Rho, to the north-west, and the roads there can be slow. If you are travelling for a fair, book your transfer early, mention the venue, and allow longer than your normal margin. Our events hub lists the major gatherings we cover, and the Malpensa airport page goes into more detail on the airport side.
Meeting your driver at the station
Train arrivals are tracked, so the pickup follows your actual arrival time. At a station, free waiting is 15 minutes from arrival. The meeting point is confirmed in your booking; the driver may hold a name board, and an alias can replace your name if you prefer privacy. Milano Centrale is large, with several exits, so tell us which side your train arrives on if you know it. For a full inside-the-terminal meeting, the meet and greet page explains the option.
How Onroutz.ca delivers a Milan transfer
Onroutz.ca is a transfer desk based in Toronto. In Italy the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner. Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices it from Toronto: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, and the vehicle class is confirmed at booking as "or similar". The fleet page shows the classes.
Train travel connects well with our other Italian pages. If you are coming from Rome, see the Rome hotel transfer; if Venice is next, see Venice Marco Polo airport transfers; for the French end of a rail itinerary, see Paris Gare de Lyon; for the national picture, start at the Europe hub and the rail transfers index. Entry rules for non-EU visitors, including the Entry/Exit System, are explained on the EU's travel-europe.europa.eu page. Italian rail tickets and the high-speed network are sold through Trenitalia.
