What are the best Phuket airport transfers to Patong and the beaches?
The best Phuket airport transfers are pre-booked private cars: your driver tracks the flight and takes you from the airport at the island's northern end to your hotel, about 40 km to Patong in roughly 45–75 minutes. Airport buses run until the evening, and taxis are plentiful, but a booked car suits families, luggage and late flights.
Phuket looks small on a map and drives larger. The airport is at the top of the island, and almost every holiday area is a long way down the coast: Bang Tao and Kamala on the west side, Patong in the middle, Karon and Kata to the south and Rawai at the far end. Where your hotel sits decides everything about the transfer.
This page explains the distances, the official bus services, the taxi and car options, and the entry paperwork that affects the first hour of your arrival. It also says plainly when a bus is enough.
How far is Phuket airport from the beaches?
| Destination | About distance | Typical drive time | Peak caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bang Tao and Laguna | about 20 km | 25–40 min | Light most of the day |
| Kamala and Surin | about 30 km | 35–55 min | Busy at midday and evening |
| Patong | about 40 km | 45–75 min | Hill road and beach road slow at peak |
| Phuket Town | about 30 km | 35–55 min | Rush hour on weekdays |
| Karon and Kata | about 45–50 km | 60–90 min | Slow in high season |
| Rawai and Nai Harn | about 55 km | 70–100 min | Longest regular run on the island |
These are rounded estimates for planning. Independent sources put the airport-to-Patong distance between about 35 and 40 km, and a drive of 45 to 60 minutes with another 15 to 30 minutes at busy times. High season, which runs from roughly November to April, is the slowest.
What the airport's own bus services cover
Phuket International Airport publishes its bus routes on the official airport site. The Airport Bus runs hourly to Phuket Town, from 8:15 am to 8:15 pm from the airport, with stops in front of the arrival hall exit. The Airport Bus Express runs to Patong Beach via Thalang and the Kathu junction, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm from the airport. A Smart Bus leaves from the Domestic Terminal near the arrival exit and calls at Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai. Public vans also serve Patong, Kata and Karon.
The last of these services leaves the airport in the evening. If your flight lands at 9 pm or later, no airport bus is waiting for you, which is when the choice narrows to a taxi or a car.
Phuket airport transfers compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airport Bus Express to Patong | 75–120 min including stops | Low public fare | Carry it yourself | Light packers arriving before about 7 pm |
| Smart Bus to beaches | 90–150 min | Low public fare | Limited | Budget travellers going to a bus stop |
| Official airport taxi | 45–75 min | Metered plus an airport charge; confirm at the counter | 2 large bags in a sedan | Two travellers, daytime |
| Pre-booked private car (Onroutz.ca) | 45–90 min | Fixed fare via booker | Sedan, SUV or Sprinter by group size | Families, 3+ travellers, late flights, resorts |
| Private van or Sprinter | 45–90 min | Fixed fare via booker | 12 passengers, 12 bags | Groups, weddings, dive trips |
The buses are slower than they look on the schedule because they make stops and because the road to the beaches is shared with scooters, tour minibuses and trucks. A bus is a good choice for one traveller with a rucksack, a flexible plan and a hotel near a stop.
Choosing an area by the drive: what the distances mean for your stay
Because the airport is at the north end, your choice of beach is also a choice of transfer length. Bang Tao and Laguna are the closest of the big resort areas, which suits a short first day. Kamala and Surin are quieter and sit between. Patong is the centre of nightlife and dining, with the busiest roads. Karon and Kata are family beaches further south, and Rawai and Nai Harn are the farthest regular drop. If you are travelling with young children after a long flight, a shorter drive is worth weighing against what the beach offers.
If you have not decided, tell the desk the dates and the group, and we explain the transfer length for each area. The same car can also take you between beaches during the stay, so a change of hotel halfway through does not need a new plan.
When a taxi or the bus is enough
If you are travelling alone, you arrive in daylight, your hotel is in Patong or Phuket Town, and the airport bus times suit you, the bus is cheap and works. A metered taxi from the official counter is also reasonable for two travellers with ordinary bags. Use the marked taxi counters, and avoid anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a ride, which is a known pitfall at Thai airports.
What you give up is certainty. You do not know the vehicle, the final fare or the driver's route until you are in the car, and after a long-haul flight that uncertainty is tiring.
When a pre-booked private car is the right call
- Families with children. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking, which a walk-up taxi cannot promise.
- Three or more travellers. A Luxury SUV carries up to six, and an Executive Sprinter up to twelve.
- A resort away from a bus stop. Bang Tao, Layan, Cape Panwa and the quiet bays sit off the public routes.
- Late arrivals. Many flights from Bangkok, Singapore and the Gulf land in the evening, after the buses stop.
- Luggage. Dive gear, golf bags and family cases fit a Sprinter.
- Wedding and group arrivals. Several vehicles can be coordinated for one party.
The fleet page shows every class, and the guide to airport transfer versus taxi versus rideshare explains the broader trade-offs.
Arriving in Thailand: the TDAC and visa rules
Every foreign traveller must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, or TDAC, before arrival, whether or not they need a visa. The Royal Thai Embassy in Abuja states that foreign travellers must submit the TDAC within three days before they arrive, that it is free, and that you should submit it only through the Thai Immigration Bureau at tdac.immigration.go.th. The card is not a visa and does not replace one. See the embassy's explanation of the TDAC. Avoid fake sites that charge fees.
Thailand revised its visa-exemption rules in the autumn of 2026. The permitted length of stay for a Canadian passport is something to confirm with the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate before you buy your tickets, because older guides show different figures. Save the TDAC confirmation on your phone for the immigration counter.
How the pickup works at Phuket airport
Every airport pickup is flight-tracked. We allow 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing, 30 after a domestic landing and 15 on other pickups. Domestic and international arrivals are in different halls. Your chauffeur holds a name board at the arrivals exit, with an alias on request, and sends the location by message. A meet and greet puts a person at the immigration exit if you want help with the walk.
The first impression of Phuket is humid heat. Your vehicle is air-conditioned, and most vehicles carry water and phone charging.
The road: hills, scooters and the rainy season
The drive to Patong crosses the hills on the Kathu side, which are steep and winding, and the beach roads are lined with scooters, shops and tour minibuses. A good chauffeur drives smoothly and does not rush. The rainy season, roughly May to October, brings heavy showers, and on some days rough seas affect ferry sailings, so keep your onward boat plans flexible.
If you are connecting to a ferry to Phi Phi or another island, tell the desk the departure time and pier. We plan the transfer against the boat, not the other way round, and we suggest arriving at the pier with a safe buffer.
Resorts, villas and group trips
Phuket is a resort island, and many guests arrive in groups of six to twelve for weddings, birthdays and dive weeks. A single Sprinter takes twelve passengers with bags. For larger parties, mini-coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. See resort transfers and hotel transfers for how we handle larger parties, and the Sprinter van with driver page for group sizes.
Travellers who want a car for the whole stay can ask about a personal driver, which keeps one chauffeur and vehicle across the days.
Combining Phuket with Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur
Phuket is often one stop on a longer Asian trip. Our Bangkok Suvarnabhumi page, the Bangkok to Pattaya route, the Singapore page and the Kuala Lumpur page use the same booking process, so a multi-city trip can sit on one booking with one invoice. The travel desk plans the legs.
How Onroutz.ca delivers a Phuket transfer
Onroutz.ca is a Toronto-based desk. We do not own cars or offices in Thailand. A vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner drives the car, and the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices the ride. You get one booking, one confirmation, one invoice and a 24/7 contact. No partner vehicle is older than four model years (seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach).
Our cancellation terms: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup.
For the regional overview, see the Asia-Pacific hub. The airport transfers hub lists every airport.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Phuket airport from Patong?
About 40 km. Independent sources give figures between 35 and 40 km. The drive takes 45–75 minutes, and up to 90 minutes at busy times in high season.
How much is a taxi from Phuket airport to Patong?
Official airport taxis use a meter plus an airport charge, and the total varies with traffic and the route. Pre-booked fares are fixed. The booker shows our fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
Is there a bus from Phuket airport to Patong?
Yes. The airport's Airport Bus Express runs to Patong Beach from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, and a Smart Bus serves Patong and other beaches from the Domestic Terminal area. Check the airport site for the current times.
Is there a bus after 8 pm?
The published airport bus services end in the evening, so for late arrivals the choice is a taxi or a pre-booked car. A booked car also avoids queueing after a long flight.
Do I need the Thailand Digital Arrival Card?
Yes, all foreign travellers do, whether or not they need a visa. It is free, filed online within three days before arrival, and not a visa.
Can you take me to the Phi Phi ferry?
Yes. Give the desk the ferry time and pier, and we plan the pickup so you arrive with a buffer. Sailings can change in rough weather.
Can I book a family car with child seats?
Yes. Child, toddler and booster seats are on request at booking. Tell the desk the ages and heights.
Is tipping expected in Thailand?
Tipping is appreciated but not required. A small amount for help with luggage is a courtesy, never an obligation.
What if my flight is delayed?
We track the flight, and the chauffeur adjusts. After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting.
