A Heathrow to London hotel transfer sounds like one trip, but it is really a choice between airports, roads, rail lines and kerbs. Heathrow sits about 24 km (15 mi) west of the West End, Gatwick about 45 km (28 mi) to the south, and London City only a few kilometres east of the financial district. Your hotel might be a Mayfair address with a doorman, a Knightsbridge townhouse on a one-way street, or a tower at London Bridge. This page walks through all of it, says plainly when the train is the better call, and shows where a private car booked through Onroutz.ca earns its place.

What is the best way to get from Heathrow to your London hotel?

For most travellers with luggage, a pre-booked private car is the simplest: the driver tracks your flight, meets you in arrivals and drives to the hotel entrance in roughly 45 to 75 minutes. The Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express suits a solo traveller with light bags and a hotel beside a station.

The route from Heathrow follows the M4 and then the Cromwell Road or the A4 into the West End, with a parallel run through west London on the A40 for some addresses. Neither is fast at the wrong hour. A weekday landing at 07:30 meets the whole of London's morning commute, and a Friday afternoon is slow in both directions.

Our dedicated page for the airport-to-central-London run, Heathrow to Central London, covers the rail fares and the road in detail. This page is for the other question: you already know the hotel, and you want to know how to get to it from whichever airport you are using.

The figures below are rounded road distances and typical off-peak to peak drive times, written as planning numbers. Central London is a patchwork of one-way streets, bus lanes and event closures, and the last kilometre often takes longer than the first fifteen.

Gatwick's larger numbers come from the M23 and the approach through south London, which is slower than the motorway suggests. London City looks like the obvious airport for a City hotel, and it is, but only a limited number of routes land there, so most long-haul visitors arrive at Heathrow regardless of how close their hotel is to Docklands. Stansted and Luton sit well to the north, about 55 km and 50 km from the centre, and are usually 60 to 100 minutes by road to a West End hotel.

Heathrow's own pages list the black cab ranks outside every terminal and confirm that black cab drivers are licensed after passing the Knowledge of London. They also point to approved pre-booked providers, including a fixed-rate on-site electric car service with desks in the arrivals halls. You can read them on Heathrow's taxis page.

When the train beats the car, and when it does not

The honest rule of thumb: a hotel within a few minutes' walk of a station that a direct train serves, and one person with one bag, is a train trip. The Elizabeth line puts you at Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road or Liverpool Street without road traffic, and the Gatwick services run to Victoria, London Bridge and St Pancras. The Heathrow rail guide sets out the options per terminal, and our own Heathrow to Central London page compares the fares.

A private car wins when any of these is true:

  • You are three or more. One vehicle, one address, no splitting up at Paddington.
  • You are carrying real luggage. Two large cases and a pushchair do not belong on the Elizabeth line at 08:00.
  • It is late. Hotels in Mayfair and Knightsbridge are a long way from any station after midnight.
  • You are arriving at Gatwick and staying west of Hyde Park. The train gets you to Victoria, and then you still need a way to Knightsbridge or Park Lane.
  • Children are travelling. Child, toddler and booster seats can be added at booking.
  • You are on a business timetable. A fixed pickup and a tracked flight take the guesswork out of a 09:30 meeting.

Mayfair, Park Lane and Knightsbridge: the west side

Most of London's grand hotels cluster around Hyde Park, which also happens to be the side nearest Heathrow. A car from the M4 reaches Knightsbridge before it reaches the Strand, and the savings can be 10 minutes. The challenge is the last stretch: Park Lane is a major road with very little legal kerb, and the smaller streets of Mayfair run one-way. A driver who works this area every week knows which side street the hotel's entrance really faces.

If you are staying in the Hyde Park Corner area, ask about your arrival direction when you book. A car coming in from the west may reach the front door by a different loop than one coming from the City.

The Strand, Covent Garden and Whitehall

This is the part of London where the street plan was laid out before motor cars. The approach to The Savoy, for example, uses a short private forecourt, and the hotels around Whitehall are on streets that close for state events and parades. The best advice is to travel with the hotel's name and street as well as its postcode, and to read the confirmation for the pickup note.

The City, Tower Hill and London Bridge

Business travellers often choose these hotels. The City empties out at weekends, so a Saturday arrival is fast, while a Tuesday at 08:30 is not. London City Airport is by far the closest option for a City hotel, and a taxi from there is usually under an hour even at peak. If you fly into Heathrow instead, allow a longer ride: the road crosses the whole width of London. On the south side of the river, London Bridge hotels sit near the station that the Gatwick trains reach, which makes Gatwick plus a short cab or car trip a workable pair.

Staying at or near Heathrow

If your hotel is at Terminal 5, such as the Sofitel in our table, you have no ride to book at all on arrival. Our service starts when you leave the airport hotel for central London, a meeting or a rail station. A pre-booked car is also useful when you plan a very early flight and want a pickup at the hotel door rather than a shuttle you have to time.

How the London transfer works with Onroutz.ca

Onroutz.ca is a transfer desk in Toronto. In London the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, and Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices it: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, and Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach vehicles up to seven. Transport for London licenses private hire operators, drivers and vehicles in the capital, and a private hire car must be booked in advance rather than hailed from the street.

On the day:

  1. Your confirmation names the vehicle class (Executive Sedan, First Class Sedan, Luxury SUV, Executive Sprinter or similar) and the meeting point.
  2. We follow your flight from departure. If it is early, late or diverted, the pickup follows the actual landing.
  3. The chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board; an alias name can go on the board for privacy.
  4. Waiting time is free for 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one. That covers passport control and the baggage hall.
  5. The driver loads your bags and goes to the hotel entrance, or the nearest legal stopping point.

Where the driver meets you at each airport

At Heathrow, the driver waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal. The airport has four terminals (2, 3, 4 and 5), and your confirmation names the right one. At Gatwick, the North and South terminals each have their own arrivals, and the airport's official taxi partner works from both. At London City, the single terminal is compact, so the walk from the baggage hall is short.

Tell us your flight number and we do the rest. If you change airline or terminal after booking, send a message to the desk and the meeting point is updated.

Late flights, early starts and delays

London's night tube and rail service is limited, and the Heathrow trains stop for the night. Black cab ranks remain, but the queue after a delayed transatlantic landing can be long. A pre-booked pickup is the dependable choice when your flight lands near midnight. The same logic works in reverse for 06:00 departures, when the first trains run later than you may want to leave.

The central London Congestion Charge applies in a defined zone from 07:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and from 12:00 to 18:00 on weekends and bank holidays, as set out on Transport for London's Congestion Charge page. The fare shown in the booker is all-in for your route, so you do not receive a road-charge bill afterwards.

Cruise, rail and onward connections

London is the starting point for many multi-leg trips. If your trip continues to a ship, see our Southampton cruise transfers page. For a Eurostar connection, the King's Cross and St Pancras rail transfer page covers the station. If you are moving between airports, the Heathrow to Gatwick transfer page lays out the road and time, and the Gatwick airport page covers the other end. A single booking can combine these legs. The travel desk helps with itineraries that cross several cities.

Groups, VIP arrivals and discretion

For a wedding party or a corporate delegation, an Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, and mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. For public figures and executives, a name-board meet and greet with an alias keeps a name off the arrivals hall. Chauffeurs never photograph passengers or post about a trip, and a non-disclosure agreement can be signed if you ask. Onroutz.ca is a transport service, not a security company, and works alongside a client's own team. See the fleet for the vehicle classes, or airport transfers for every airport we serve.

Reserve your car

Before you land

The United Kingdom has its own electronic travel authorisation for many visitors who do not need a visa, so confirm your requirements well before departure. We cannot check documents, but our free waiting time starts at actual landing, so a long immigration queue does not cost you the pickup. Gatwick's own pages are a useful reference for its terminals and rail links: see gatwickairport.com.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a transfer from Heathrow to London?

Public transport fares are set by TfL and the rail operators and change each year. For a private car, the booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact hotel, vehicle and time before you pay, so there is no meter and no surge.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel in London?

Pick by luggage, party size and station distance. The Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express suit light travellers whose hotel is beside a station. A black cab needs no booking. A pre-booked car meets you in arrivals and goes to the hotel entrance, which matters with children, heavy bags or a late landing.

Is there a hotel shuttle at Heathrow?

Hotels at the airport, such as those at Terminal 5, are close to the terminals, and some run their own shuttles. Central London hotels do not provide a free airport shuttle, which is why most guests there choose a train, a taxi or a pre-booked car. Ask your hotel what it offers.

Is Uber cheaper than a taxi from Heathrow?

Ride-app fares move with demand, so the same trip can cost more or less than a black cab at different hours, and the match takes time. A black cab is metered at rates set by TfL. A pre-booked car is the option with a fixed price quoted before you commit.

Can you take me from Gatwick or London City to my hotel?

Yes. Gatwick to central London is about 45 km and usually 65 to 100 minutes by road. London City to a City or Docklands hotel is often under 45 minutes. The booker takes the airport, the flight number and the hotel, and quotes one fare.

Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?

Yes. We track the flight, so a delayed landing moves the pickup. Free waiting runs 60 minutes after an international arrival and 30 after a domestic one, counted from actual landing. A pickup from a hotel or an address allows 15 minutes of free waiting.

What is your cancellation policy?

More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. A big event week may use a different cut-off, and your confirmation prints the one that applies.

Who drives the car in London?

A vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner drives the vehicle. Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices the transfer from Toronto, so you deal with one desk and receive one invoice.
