Which terminal at Dubai airport does your airline use?

At Dubai International (DXB), Terminal 3 is used by Emirates, flydubai, Qantas, United Airlines and Air Canada. Terminal 1 serves most other international airlines, including British Airways, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines. Terminal 2 handles flydubai, Wizz Air, Air India Express and regional carriers.

That list comes straight from the airline directory on the Dubai Airports website, which is the one place that sorts carriers by building. It is worth opening on the day you fly, because carriers do shift terminals and the directory is updated when they do.

Two points save most people from a mistake. First, flydubai appears under both Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, so the airline name alone is not enough; the booking confirmation names the terminal. Second, Terminal 2 is a separate building and a separate road journey from Terminals 1 and 3, so a wrong guess costs real minutes, not a short corridor walk.

If you are trying to decide between Dubai's two airports rather than its terminals, our piece on Al Maktoum versus Dubai International covers that question separately.

Terminal 3: A, B and C gates

Terminal 3 is the Emirates building. Dubai Airports describes its A, B and C gates as mainly used by Emirates, flydubai, United and Air Canada, and its airline directory also lists Qantas in this terminal. Concourses B and C can be walked between. The A gates are reached by a short airport train ride.

Visitors from Canada should note that the directory shows Air Canada in Terminal 3, which is the same building as Emirates. That makes a Toronto to Dubai arrival unusually simple: the immigration hall, the baggage carousels and the main arrivals exit are all in one place.

Terminal 3 also hosts the Dubai government visa office for travellers who need it. Dubai Airports lists the GDRFA visa office in Terminal 3 arrivals near Entrance 1, open 24 hours a day. Entry rules depend on your passport, so confirm them with the official UAE sources before you travel.

Metro: the Red Line has a station serving Terminal 3, and ticket offices and vending machines are in the terminal.

Terminal 1: the D gates

Terminal 1 is the long list. Its airline directory entry runs from Aegean Airlines to Yemenia, with names such as Air France, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, KLM, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Swiss, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines and Virgin Atlantic. Dubai Airports lists the D gates as Terminal 1's gate range, and the D gates are reached by a short airport train ride from the main terminal building.

Two practical points follow. A flight boarding at a D gate means you should allow extra time to get from security to the gate, because the train adds a step. And if you are meeting someone off a British Airways or Delta flight, Terminal 1 is their arrival building, not Terminal 3, which catches a lot of hotel drivers and friends out.

Metro: the Red Line also serves Terminal 1, and the same ticket-office arrangement applies.

Terminal 2: the F gates and the regional carriers

Terminal 2 serves the F gates and a mix of regional and international flights. The directory lists flydubai, Wizz Air, Air India Express, SalamAir, Nepal Airlines, RwandAir, Iraqi Airways and other regional carriers here.

Terminal 2 is the one the Dubai Airports metro page does not mention. The Red Line pages name only Terminals 1 and 3, and the page says nothing about how to reach Terminal 2 by metro. In practice that means a taxi, a ride-hail car or a pre-arranged driver for Terminal 2, unless you check the RTA journey planner for a bus link.

Gates can be reassigned within a day, so use the flight board on the Dubai Airports site for the same-day gate and terminal.

After landing: immigration, bags and the exit

The arrival sequence is the same in every terminal: passport control, baggage claim, customs, then the arrivals hall. For most visitors the slowest step is immigration at the busy times, which cluster in the early morning and late evening when long-haul flights bunch together.

If you are connecting through Dubai rather than ending your trip there, the transfer rules matter. Dubai Airports' transfers page says that passengers who do not need a visa, or who hold a Dubai visa and are on separate tickets, must clear passport control, collect their bags and check in again. Passengers without a Dubai visa who need help moving bags can use the paid Marhaba service at the transfer desk. Our guide to a Dubai layover and the transit visa goes through the cases in more detail.

Getting between terminals and what to do if you are in the wrong one

Dubai Airports' guidance for moving between concourses or terminals is blunt: check with your airline or a Guest Experience Ambassador on arrival. The two internal movements the page names are the train to the D gates in Terminal 1 and the train to the A gates in Terminal 3. Moves between terminals themselves are a road journey.

If you realise you are at the wrong terminal before check-in, go straight to the information desk and ask for the quickest route. A taxi from terminal to terminal is the usual solution. If you are on a single airline ticket, ask that airline's desk before you move, because the desk will know the fastest way across.

Metro, taxi, ride-hail or private car: terminal to hotel

Dubai Airports lists Dubai Taxi Company cars at ranks in every terminal, available 24 hours a day, with a starting fare of AED 25 plus distance charges. Uber, Careem and Bolt are listed too. The Red Line runs from Terminals 1 and 3, with hours of 5 a.m. to midnight Monday to Thursday and Saturday, 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Fridays and 8 a.m. to midnight on Sundays. The metro page recommends travelling light with up to two pieces of luggage.

The metro wins on traffic and tends to be the best answer when you are alone, packing light, and your hotel is near a Red Line station. The private car wins with children, with more than two bags, in the heat, on arrival at 2 a.m. when the metro is closed, and when you land in Terminal 2, where the metro is not an option.

For longer runs the picture changes. Road routing (OSRM) puts the Marina about 35 km and the Palm about 40 km from DXB, roughly 35 to 40 minutes without traffic and longer at peak, and central Abu Dhabi is about 155 km, roughly 1 h 40. Our guide on Dubai to Abu Dhabi by bus or private car compares those modes, and the Dubai airport to Abu Dhabi transfer page covers the road.

Where chauffeurs and meet-and-greet staff meet arrivals

The meeting point depends on whether you booked a name board. If you did, your chauffeur or greeter stands inside the arrivals hall at the terminal where your flight lands, holding a sign with your name or an alias if you prefer privacy. If you did not, the driver waits at the pickup point named in the confirmation and you walk out to them.

For the second option, remember that Terminal 3 has several entrances, and Dubai Airports refers to Entrance 1 when it describes the visa office. Give the driver the entrance you come out of and your mobile number.

Our Dubai airport pickup page explains the standard arrival service, with flight tracking and waiting time after international landings. The Dubai airport meet-and-greet page covers the inside-arrivals option with assistance. If you are heading to a hotel, the Dubai hotel transfers page lists the districts.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

Dubai is a night-time hub. Many long-haul flights land between midnight and 5 a.m., which is exactly when the Red Line is closed or has not yet opened for the day, and when the Sunday start of 8 a.m. leaves an even longer gap. On those arrivals the choices narrow to a taxi, a ride-hail car or a pre-booked driver.

There are three small habits that make a night arrival smoother. Tell the hotel your landing time so that the room is ready before you reach the door. Ask the driver to track the flight, so that a delayed aircraft does not leave a car idling at the kerb. And keep a screenshot of the booking and the driver's details, because mobile data takes a few minutes to settle after a long flight.

In summer, the heat is the other factor. A walk from a kerb to a car park or a rank in July is not pleasant, so a driver who meets you at the arrivals exit and walks you to an air-conditioned car earns his keep.

Common mistakes at DXB

  1. Choosing the terminal by country, not by airline. An airline may be in Terminal 1 even if its home country is also served in Terminal 3.
  2. Forgetting flydubai flies from two terminals. Read the terminal on the booking.
  3. Assuming the metro reaches Terminal 2. The official page names Terminals 1 and 3 only.
  4. Underestimating the D-gate train. Add a few minutes if your gate starts with D.
  5. Taking the wrong exit. If your driver is in a different entrance, a phone call beats a long walk.
