Which Great Lakes cruise ships call at Toronto?

In the 2026 season the Toronto Port Authority scheduled 45 calls from April 16 to October 27: Viking (Polaris and Octantis), Victory Cruise Lines (Victory I and II), Pearl Seas Cruises (Pearl Mist), Ponant (Le Bellot) and Hapag-Lloyd (Hanseatic Inspiration). All dock at the Cruise Ship Terminal, 8 Unwin Avenue.

A Great Lakes cruise is a different animal from a Caribbean one. The ships are small, with listed capacities from 184 to 378, and they are expedition vessels or compact coastal liners, not floating resorts. Their appeal is the route, a chain of lakes and locks that includes the Welland Canal and the Niagara region, and ports that a large ship cannot enter.

Toronto matters because it is a turnaround port. The Toronto Port Authority describes it as a place where passengers can start or finish a voyage and spend time in the city, so you will see "embarks at Toronto" on some itineraries and "calls at Toronto" on others. The difference matters for logistics, and most of this guide follows from it.

If you are flying in from the USA, remember that Toronto is an international arrival. Check your own entry requirements on the Government of Canada's eTA page, where the authorization is priced at CAD 7, and our guide to who needs an eTA for Canada walks through the common cases.

The 2026 season, line by line

The port's published schedule is the most reliable view of who actually calls. Dates are subject to change, so confirm with your cruise line.

Hapag-LloydHanseatic Inspiration2230An overnight stay on September 29 and 30

Of the 45 calls, 34 are same-day visits and 11 stay overnight, which usually signals a turnaround. Most ships arrive between 06:00 and 08:00 and sail between 15:00 and 20:00. Viking's Polaris and Octantis are listed with overnight calls in April, June, July, August and October, and Ponant's Le Bellot and Hapag-Lloyd's Hanseatic Inspiration have a few as well.

The last call on the 2026 schedule is October 27, when Victory I is listed with a 06:00 arrival and an 18:00 departure. That means the season in Toronto effectively ends within weeks of this post.

What is coming in 2027?

At the time of writing, the port's cruise pages show the 2026 schedule only. For 2027, the clearest official detail comes from the lines. Victory Cruise Lines announced 43 sailings from April to October, 19 of them covering all five Great Lakes. Its returning itineraries include all-five-lakes voyages between Chicago and Toronto, and its Montreal roundtrips combine the St. Lawrence Seaway with the Great Lakes, including access to Niagara Falls. The line also lists Kingston, Ontario, as a new destination.

Victory's announcement does not name Windsor or Detroit, so we cannot confirm a Windsor call for 2027. If your plan depends on one, check your line's itinerary page.

The takeaway for planners: the pattern is steady, with Viking, Victory, Pearl Seas, Ponant and Hapag-Lloyd calling in spring through autumn. Book flights and hotels only after your embarkation date is on a confirmed ticket.

Where is the cruise terminal, and how do I get there?

The Cruise Ship Terminal is at 8 Unwin Avenue, at the corner of Unwin Avenue and Cherry Street in the Port Lands, east of the downtown core. Arriving by car, you drive south on Cherry Street, turn right onto Unwin Avenue, take the first left before the security gatehouse, and follow the road round to the building. Passengers embarking and disembarking use the North Door, marked with Arrival and Departure boards.

Public transit exists, but it is thin. The TTC 202 bus runs seasonally from mid-May to October, linking cruise passengers with downtown Toronto and other points in the GTA, and its nearest stop is Cherry Street at Unwin Avenue. The port says taxis and private cars are the easiest options, and it gives no figures for walking or parking.

The terminal is outside the glass-tower core, so the walk from Union Station is not a plan to make with luggage. From Union Station the terminal is about 4 km by road, roughly 10 minutes without traffic, and 15 to 25 minutes is a sensible allowance at rush hour on the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore.

Pearson, Billy Bishop or Union Station: three ways to arrive

Most Great Lakes passengers fly in to one of Toronto's airports and need to reach the pier by early afternoon.

RouteDoor-to-pier timeCost noteLuggageBest for
Pearson by UP Express to Union, then a short car rideAbout 28 min on the train plus roughly 10 min by car without traffic (15 to 25 at rush hour)UP Express fare is published on its site; the car leg is meteredManageable if you have one case eachCouples with light bags

Billy Bishop by taxi or private carAbout 6 km, roughly 15 min without traffic; longer at rush hourMetered, or fixed through the bookerFineUS travellers on short hops

UP Express connects Pearson to Union Station in about 28 minutes, with intermediate stops at Weston and Bloor and Mount Dennis. It is quick and dependable, and it leaves you at Union with a second journey still to do. On most days that last leg is a cab, since the cruise terminal is not near a rail station.

Great Lakes expedition passengers tend to pack for four seasons and bring expedition gear, so large suitcases are the norm. Pearson has more than one arrivals hall, so our guide to meeting points at Pearson arrivals is worth a look before you land. Our guide to UP Express versus a private car from Pearson breaks down the airport leg in detail, and the Pearson airport transfer page covers the terminals.

When a private car makes the day easier

There are three situations in which the car is plainly better than the train-and-taxi chain.

  1. The ship has an early boarding window. Cruise lines often assign check-in times in the early afternoon. A driver who tracks your flight can meet you at arrivals, load the bags and take you straight to the North Door, so a delayed landing does not mean a missed window.
  2. You are travelling with a lot of luggage. Expedition cruises call for waterproofs, boots, binoculars and layers, and the bags show it.
  3. You want a Niagara day before or after. The Toronto to Niagara Falls transfer covers about 130 km (80 mi) and takes roughly 1 h 30 without traffic, with 2 h to 2 h 30 possible at peak times such as a Friday afternoon. Pairing that with a pier drop-off in one booking avoids a second reservation.

In Toronto and the GTA, Onroutz.ca drives the trip with its own fleet and chauffeurs, dispatched from Toronto. Your driver tracks the flight, offers 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, and can meet you inside arrivals with a name board. Seats for children, toddlers and boosters can be added when you book. The fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup and drop-off appears in the booker before you commit.

Stay the night before, or fly in on the day?

A Great Lakes departure is not a good place to cut the margin. These ships sail as scheduled and cannot easily wait for a late arrival.

  • Fly in the night before. This is the safest plan, especially for passengers connecting from the USA or overseas. A downtown hotel puts you within a short ride of the pier. Our downtown Toronto hotel transfer page covers the area.
  • Fly in on the morning. It works if your flight lands by about 10:00 and your boarding window opens in the afternoon. Anything later is a gamble.
  • Arrive with a cushion. Give yourself at least two hours between wheels-down and the start of your window.

For disembarkation, the same logic works in reverse. Ships typically pull alongside in the morning, with disembarkation after breakfast, and a flight before 13:00 leaves little slack for customs on the way home. Check the time your line gives for leaving the ship.

Explore Toronto while the ship is in

If your itinerary gives you a few hours, the city is close. Our guide to Toronto's attractions by private car plans a short loop, and the Toronto hub lists what we cover in the city. Same-day calls are tight, with ships typically arriving in the morning and leaving mid to late afternoon, so pick one or two sights.

Two practical points apply to a port day. First, you must be back before all-aboard, which is earlier than the sailing time. Second, the terminal is outside the downtown core, so a return ride at 15:00 needs a plan: pre-book it or you will be queuing for a cab with other passengers.

Other Great Lakes and St. Lawrence routes

Some travellers want a route that starts elsewhere. Victory's 2027 programme includes roundtrips from Montreal and Quebec City that take in the St. Lawrence Seaway. Our guides to the Toronto to Montreal route and VIA Rail versus driving to Montreal cover the connection if you are combining Toronto with a Quebec sailing.

Frequently asked questions

Where do Great Lakes cruise ships dock in Toronto?

At the Toronto Port Authority's Cruise Ship Terminal, 8 Unwin Avenue, at the corner of Unwin Avenue and Cherry Street. Passengers use the North Door, and cars follow the signs round to the building.

Which cruise lines sail the Great Lakes?

The 2026 Toronto schedule lists Viking, Victory Cruise Lines, Pearl Seas Cruises, Ponant and Hapag-Lloyd. Victory has announced 43 sailings for 2027, including voyages across all five lakes.

When is the Toronto cruise season?

The port lists 2026 calls from April 16 to October 27, with the TTC 202 bus operating from mid-May to October. Most ships arrive between 06:00 and 08:00 and depart between 15:00 and 20:00.

Can I take public transit to the Toronto cruise terminal?

Partly. The TTC 202 bus runs seasonally from mid-May to October, and its nearest stop is Cherry Street at Unwin Avenue. The port itself says taxis and private cars are the easiest options.

How far is the cruise terminal from Pearson Airport?

It is about 35 km (22 mi) by road, roughly 40 minutes by car without traffic, and longer when the 427 and the Gardiner Expressway are busy. UP Express to Union Station takes about 28 minutes but leaves a second ride.

Do Great Lakes cruises include Niagara Falls?

Some do. Victory's Montreal roundtrips combine the St. Lawrence Seaway with the Great Lakes and include access to Niagara Falls. Check your itinerary for the day and the excursion.

Do I need an eTA for a Great Lakes cruise?

It depends on your passport and how you enter. The Government of Canada's eTA costs CAD 7 and is for visa-exempt travellers flying in. Check the official page for your nationality before you book flights.

Does a Toronto driver wait if my flight is late?

Yes. Your flight is tracked, and international landings include 60 minutes of free waiting. If the delay is longer, the desk adjusts the pickup.
