How long does the UP Express really take from Pearson to Union Station?

The train itself takes 28 minutes and leaves every 15 minutes, according to UP Express. A realistic baggage-claim-to-hotel trip is 55 to 100 minutes once you add the walk to the platform, the wait, the Union Station exit with bags and the final leg to your door.

Most people searching for the UP Express are comparing a 28-minute number to a car that is stuck on the 427. That comparison is unfair to both. The train is rarely as fast as the headline, and the road is rarely as slow as a Friday-evening horror story.

Here is the whole trip, step by step, with the published facts separated from the allowances we use when we plan these journeys. By the end you will know when the train is clearly the right call, which is more often than a car company would like to admit, and when it is not.

The published timetable: 28 minutes, every 15

UP Express runs between Toronto Pearson and Union Station at the heart of downtown. The station pages give a 28-minute journey, trains every 15 minutes, and first and last departures that differ by day. On the Union Station page the first train leaves at 4:55 am and the last at 1:00 am. On the Pearson page the first train leaves at 5:27 am on weekdays and 6:24 am on weekends and holidays, and the last leaves at 12:54 am every day (UP Express: Union Station schedule). Always check the live timetable for your date, because it changes with holidays and track work.

Two consequences follow straight away. A flight that lands at 5:10 am cannot realistically make a 5:27 train once bags and customs are done, and on weekends the first train is 6:24. A landing close to midnight makes the last train just as unrealistic.

Step one: from baggage claim to the platform

At Pearson the UP Express station is in Terminal 1, directly beside the Terminal Link Train that connects Terminals 1 and 3, and the service counter is on the UP platform (UP Express: Pearson station). That has a clear meaning for the walk.

  • Arriving at Terminal 1: follow the train signs. Our allowance is 5 to 10 minutes with bags.
  • Arriving at Terminal 3: take the Link Train to Terminal 1 first. Add the wait and the ride and allow 15 to 20 minutes before you reach the platform.

The airport page does not publish walking times from either terminal, so these are our planning numbers. Which terminal your airline uses matters here, and our guide to Pearson Terminal 1 versus Terminal 3 sorts the airlines by building.

Step two: the wait and the ride

With a train every 15 minutes, the average wait is 7 to 8 minutes and the worst is just under 15. Add the 28-minute ride. The ride is the most reliable part of the whole trip, because it does not touch the road network.

The middle of the journey is the most comfortable part of the trip. The weak links are at either end.

Step three: Union Station with bags

Union Station is at 140 Bay Street, and the UP Express platform sits inside the Skywalk walkway. From there, TTC subway and streetcar lines and GO Transit trains and buses are described as an easy transfer (UP Express: Union Station). That is accurate, but "easy" for a commuter with a backpack is not the same as for a family with two large suitcases.

Some details that help:

  • Luggage storage: BagsAway, inside the Skywalk steps from the UP Express, stores bags on demand. Useful if your check-in time is hours away.
  • Early and late access: before 5:30 am on weekdays and Saturdays (6:30 am on Sundays and holidays), and after 12:45 am every day, the access is through the west entrance of the Great Hall at 65 Front Street West.
  • Staffed desk: customer service at the station is staffed from 4:30 am to 1:00 am on weekdays and from 5:30 am to 1:00 am on weekends and holidays.

Allow 5 to 15 minutes to get from the platform to the street, longer if you take stairs or the concourse is busy.

Step four: the last mile

Union Station is central, but your hotel or office may not be. The final leg is where the train's advantage is won or lost.

  • A hotel in the Financial District, the Entertainment District or on the Harbourfront: a short walk, a TTC stop or a five-minute taxi.
  • Yorkville, Midtown, the Beaches or a house in the east end: a transit transfer or a taxi of 15 to 30 minutes, which can take back most of the time the train saved.
  • A condo at a lake-side address: usually the worst case for luggage, because the walk from Union is longer than it looks on the map.

If your destination is at Union itself, such as a VIA Rail connection or a stay at a hotel connected to the station, the train is very hard to beat. If it is not, think about the transfer before you decide.

Fares: what the UP Express costs in 2026

The fare table on the UP Express site lists these prices as of 2026 (UP Express fares):

  • Adult (13 to 64), one-way, Union to Pearson: $12.35 by cash or ticket. Round trip is $24.70.
  • Children 12 and under: free.
  • Group Pass: $25.00 for three, $32.50 for four, $40.00 for five (Pearson origin, bought online).
  • Weston to Pearson: $5.30 one-way. Bloor to Pearson: $5.65 one-way.

The page lists a separate PRESTO fare, but it does not show the PRESTO amount in the text we could read, so check before you travel. Fares change, so treat the numbers above as a snapshot, not a quote.

Door-to-door comparison

The distance from Pearson to Union is about 30 km / 19 mi by road, roughly 30 minutes without traffic. Our planning allowance is 25 to 45 minutes by car outside peak hours, and 60 minutes or more at the evening peak or in snow. All the times below are Onroutz.ca planning allowances and start at baggage claim with bags in hand.

The group size where the maths changes

The train charges each adult separately until the Group Pass, then it flattens. For three travellers the Group Pass is $25.00, which is cheaper than three singles at $37.05. For four it is $32.50, and for five $40.00.

Our fare is quoted per vehicle. The booker shows a fixed all-in price for your exact pick-up and drop-off before you pay, and we do not publish it here. The honest way to compare is to add up your own numbers: the train fare, the last-mile taxi or transit, and the cost of your time and nerves. Then set that against the quote.

Three things tip the comparison faster than the headcount alone:

  1. Two or more large suitcases per person, which makes every stair a negotiation.
  2. A child in a stroller or a toddler on a long-haul flight, who has hit the limit of patience before the Link Train.
  3. A destination more than a ten-minute taxi from Union, which converts the train into a two-leg trip.

Early mornings and late nights

This is where the train has real limits. With the first Pearson departure at 5:27 am on weekdays and 6:24 am on weekends, a pre-dawn arrival from Europe or Asia lands before the first train. At the other end of the day, the last train at 12:54 am cuts off a late arrival, and a delayed flight turns it into a missed one.

A driver who tracks your flight moves with the landing time. Our standard is to follow the flight, and the allowance for free waiting after an international arrival is 60 minutes, so a late landing or a long customs line does not break the pick-up. For arrivals at awkward hours, our Pearson airport transfer page explains the process, and the arrivals meeting points guide shows where the driver stands.

When the train wins, and when a car does

Be honest with yourself on this. The train is the better choice when:

  • you are travelling alone or as a pair with one bag each,
  • your hotel is in the Financial District, at Union or within a few streets,
  • you land between 6 am and 11 pm and have no tight deadline on the road,
  • the weather on the 427 and the Gardiner is bad and you would rather not watch it, or
  • you are making a VIA Rail or GO connection at Union itself.

In those cases, a car adds cost and nothing else. We would take the train ourselves.

The car wins when the trip has more moving parts than the train handles well.

A group arriving together. One vehicle, one pick-up, one drop-off, no one lost at the Link Train.

A business arrival. A client who has been in a seat for eleven hours and has a meeting at 9 am is better served by a car door that opens at arrivals and a quiet ride to the hotel, with calls taken on the way.

A suburban or out-of-city address. Mississauga, Oakville, Markham and Vaughan are all easier by car, and from Union they add a GO leg you do not want at midnight.

A fixed time. A scheduled pick-up for a flight home does not rely on a platform wait.

If your destination is Union Station itself, our Pearson to Union Station transfer page covers that exact trip, and the downtown Toronto transfer page covers the hotels. The Union Station rail transfers page has pick-up details for the station, and the Toronto hub lists every Toronto and GTA route. For anything involving a meeting at arrivals, our meet and greet hub explains the name-board service.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the UP Express from Pearson to Union?

The UP Express station pages give 28 minutes between Pearson and Union Station, with trains every 15 minutes. Door to door, from baggage claim to a hotel, a realistic total is 55 to 100 minutes depending on terminal, wait, luggage and where you are going downtown.

What time does the UP Express run?

From Union Station the first train is at 4:55 am and the last at 1:00 am. From Pearson the first train is at 5:27 am on weekdays and 6:24 am on weekends and holidays, and the last leaves at 12:54 am. Schedules change on holidays, so check the live timetable.

How much is the UP Express in 2026?

An adult one-way fare between Union and Pearson is listed at $12.35 by cash or ticket, with a $24.70 round trip. Children 12 and under travel free. Group Passes cost $25.00 for three, $32.50 for four and $40.00 for five.

Is the UP Express at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3?

The UP Express station is at Terminal 1, beside the Terminal Link Train that connects Terminals 1 and 3. If you arrive at Terminal 3, you ride the Link Train to Terminal 1 first, then board the UP Express.

Can I store luggage at Union Station?

Yes. BagsAway, inside the Skywalk steps from the UP Express platform, stores luggage on demand. This is handy if your hotel room is not ready or you have a late flight.

Is a taxi or private car faster than the UP Express?

Often, door to door. The road trip takes roughly 30 minutes without traffic (our allowance is 25 to 45 minutes outside peak hours), but longer at rush hour. The train runs on its own track and keeps its 28 minutes. A car wins on the first and last mile, the train wins on traffic-proof timing.

What if my flight lands before the first UP Express train?

A pre-dawn landing, before 5:27 am on a weekday or 6:24 am on a weekend, has no train waiting. Your options are a taxi, a ride-hailing app or a pre-booked car that is tracking your flight.
