When is Web Summit Vancouver 2027, and how do you get there from YVR?
Web Summit's Vancouver site gives the next edition as 25 to 28 May 2027 at the Vancouver Convention Centre, 1055 Canada Place. From Vancouver International Airport, about 17 km away, the Canada Line runs to Waterfront Station in 26 minutes according to Tourism Vancouver; the centre is a short walk from there. A car takes roughly 30 minutes without traffic.
The venue is in the Coal Harbour waterfront district, beside Canada Place and the cruise terminal, with the harbour and the North Shore mountains behind it. Everything most attendees need, including hotels, restaurants, a rapid transit station and the seawall, is close by. That makes this one of the easier large conferences to attend without a car. It also means the airport run and the Whistler add-on are where planning pays off.
The dates matter more than they look. The weekend before is Victoria Day weekend, with the holiday itself on Monday 24 May 2027, so travellers from across Canada are returning to work as the event starts, and Friday 28 May is a normal working day with a lot of delegates trying to leave at once. The event's own page, vancouver.websummit.com, carries the dates and links to the venue and "Discover Vancouver" sections. Check it again nearer the time, since programmes change.
Where the centre is and how far everything is
The Vancouver Convention Centre's address is 1055 Canada Place, Vancouver, BC V6C 0C3, as shown on the venue's website. The nearest Canada Line station is Waterfront, at the other end of a short walk. By road, the distance from YVR is about 17 km (11 mi), through Marpole, over the Granville Street Bridge or the Cambie Street Bridge and into downtown.
A road-network estimate for the drive (OSRM, free-flow, no traffic) is roughly 30 minutes. Weekday peaks, and the Friday afternoon of the event in particular, will take considerably longer.
YVR to the convention centre: the options side by side
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canada Line to Waterfront, then walk | 26 minutes on the train (Tourism Vancouver) plus a walk of about 600 m and the wait | Transit fare plus the YVR AddFare on trips leaving the airport; check TransLink for current amounts | A cabin bag is easy; a large suitcase works but the walk has kerbs | Solo attendees staying downtown |
| Taxi | About 30 minutes without traffic; longer at peaks | Metered or zone-based; confirm at the rank | Boot space varies | One or two attendees |
| Ride-hail | About 30 minutes without traffic; longer at peaks | App fare, which can rise at busy times | Varies by vehicle | Short-notice trips |
| Pre-booked private car | About 30 minutes without traffic; longer at peaks | Fixed fare via the booker | Sedan, SUV or van sized to the group | Groups, sponsors, speakers, late arrivals |
TransLink's schedule page for the YVR-Airport branch gives the practical details. The first train leaves Waterfront for YVR at 4:48 am and the last at 1:08 am. From YVR toward Waterfront, the first train is 5:09 am and the last 12:54 am. Trains toward Waterfront run every 6 minutes at peak, every 8 minutes at midday, every 12 in the evening and every 15 late at night, with 8 to 15 minutes on weekends and holidays. TransLink also notes that the Cordova Street entrance to Waterfront Station is closed before 5:30 am on weekdays, so early arrivals use the Granville entrance. See the TransLink SkyTrain schedules.
Fares and the AddFare change, and sources disagree on the current figures, so we have not printed one. The TransLink trip planner and the Compass system give the live amounts.
When the Canada Line is the better choice
For a lot of attendees it is simply the best option. It is frequent, it is not affected by traffic, it ends within walking distance of the venue. A single traveller with a cabin bag, arriving between mid-morning and early evening and staying within a ten-minute walk of the centre, should take the train and be at the hotel before a taxi has cleared the airport.
Think about three things before you do. The walk from Waterfront Station to a hotel is on pavement, and in May Vancouver can be wet. A large suitcase on a crowded morning train is awkward. And there is a gap in the early morning and late night when the line is not running.
When a car is worth it
A booked car is the right call in several situations:
- A group of three or more arriving on the same flight, with luggage.
- A speaker, an exhibitor or a sponsor with display material or a stage kit, who needs to get from the airport to the loading area.
- Arrivals very late at night or very early in the morning.
- A schedule that begins as soon as you land, with a meeting before check-in.
- Travellers with limited mobility, or with children in the party.
With a pre-booked car, the driver tracks the flight, meets you in arrivals and takes the luggage to the hotel door. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting; domestic arrivals include 30. Our Vancouver airport page explains terminals and pickup points, and the Canada hub shows the other cities we serve.
Arrival timing: the midnight problem
The Canada Line stops running in the small hours: the last train from YVR toward Waterfront is at 12:54 am. A flight that lands at 11:30 pm and joins the international arrivals queue will not be on that train. Border clearance, baggage and the walk to the station can easily take an hour or more after landing, and the train is not an option for a late evening arrival.
Late arrivals are the clearest case for a car. The driver tracks the landing, waits in arrivals and takes you straight to the hotel, so a delayed flight does not turn into a taxi queue at 1 am. Visitors who need an electronic travel authorization to fly to Canada should sort that before departure; our eTA guide explains who needs one.
If you want to see what other visitors suggest for the city, the Tourism Vancouver transportation guide covers the SkyTrain, SeaBus and the airport. Its fare figures differ from TransLink's, so use TransLink for amounts.
Where to stay: Coal Harbour, downtown and beyond
Hotels sit in three bands around the venue. In the first band are the waterfront hotels on and near Canada Place Way, a walk of about five minutes. The second band stretches along West Georgia and West Hastings and into the core, a walk of 10 to 15 minutes. The third band is farther afield: Yaletown, the West End, Gastown or the edge of downtown, usually a short ride on the SkyTrain or by car.
The practical advice is to stay in the first two bands if you can. A short walk saves the risk of a missed ride, and the convention centre sits at the western end of Canada Place, where the road is often busy with cruise traffic in the season. The Canada Place cruise terminal is next to the centre, and the Alaska season is under way by late May. On days when ships are in, expect extra buses and cars on Canada Place Way. If you are curious about that side of the harbour, our guide to Alaska cruises from Vancouver or Seattle explains what happens on a turnaround day.
Book early. Large conferences soak up the hotel stock in a small downtown, and rates and availability tighten as the event approaches.
A simple three-day plan for a delegate
Tuesday, the first day. Land the evening before if you can. Check in, collect your badge on Tuesday morning and walk the halls once. Keep the afternoon light.
Wednesday and Thursday. The busiest days for meetings and evening events. If you host clients, book the car by the hour for the evening so that dinners are not limited by the taxi queue. Keep a second pickup point in mind in case the first is blocked.
Friday, the last day. If you fly out that afternoon, leave the hotel early. The Friday afternoon traffic is the worst of the week, and the airport is busier. For an early flight, a pre-booked car at a fixed time is more dependable than the first train.
Walking times and last-mile tips
The Coal Harbour seawall is a pleasant walk between hotels and the venue, and most attendees use it. A few tips will save time.
- Know your entrance. The convention centre is large. Check the programme to see which entrance your session uses.
- Plan for rain. A compact umbrella and a light waterproof jacket suit late May.
- Use the quiet hours. Between sessions, the seawall is calmer than the roads.
- Set the pickup street. For a car in the evening, agree a pickup point a short walk from the main doors, away from the drop-off queue.
For evening events and hosted dinners, an hourly car removes the problem of the taxi queue after a late session. Our trade show transportation page and corporate events service explain how hourly bookings and group shuttles are organised.
Adding Whistler for speakers and sponsors
Some speakers and sponsors extend the trip for a team day in Whistler, and the geography is simple. A road-network estimate (OSRM, free-flow, no traffic) puts Whistler about 135 km (85 mi) from YVR, roughly 2 hours 25 minutes by road on Highway 99, the Sea to Sky Highway. Our Vancouver airport to Whistler page explains the route.
In late May the road is clear of snow in the valleys, but the highway is still a mountain road with sections of single lane each way, and an incident can close it. Check DriveBC before you leave. The event ends on Friday, so a departure on Friday afternoon is the busiest time on the highway; a Thursday evening or a Saturday morning is calmer. Allow extra time on the way back for Sunday afternoon traffic, and for a flight home, leave Whistler with time for the drive of roughly two and a half hours plus your airline's check-in margin.
A van with a driver suits a team of six to twelve better than separate rental cars, because it keeps the group together and lets the driver manage the road while everyone else works or sleeps.
