New Orleans International, officially Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), is in the suburb of Kenner, west of the city. The hotel districts are all on the other side of a single interstate, and the last half-mile into the French Quarter is its own challenge. This page covers transport from the New Orleans airport to your hotel in plain terms: the distance, the flat taxi fare the airport publishes, the bus, how ride apps work at MSY, and the situations where a private car from Onroutz.ca is the practical answer.

What is the best way to get from New Orleans airport to your hotel?

For one or two travellers with a French Quarter or CBD hotel, a taxi is simple: the airport posts a flat $36 for up to two passengers. For three or more, heavy bags, a late landing or a tight schedule, a pre-booked car meets you at arrivals and drives to the hotel in about 25 to 35 minutes.

New Orleans is a city where the arrival experience matters, because most guests are coming for a weekend and want to be at the hotel, not in a queue. The honest comparison is below.

How far is each New Orleans hotel district from the airport?

Hotel areaDistance (about)Typical drive timeWhat to know
Central Business District (Poydras, Canal, Gravier)21 km / 13 mi25–35 minDirect run in on I-10, then a few downtown blocks
Canal Street and the riverfront22 km / 14 mi25–40 minHotels at the foot of Canal Street sit near the river
French Quarter23–24 km / 14–15 mi25–45 minNarrow, often one-way streets; the final blocks can take as long as the interstate
Warehouse and Arts District21 km / 13 mi25–40 minClose to the convention centre
Garden District and Uptown24–26 km / 15–16 mi30–50 minA longer run through city streets after leaving I-10

Distances and times are planning figures. Weekday afternoons, big conventions and event weekends add time, and Mardi Gras week adds a great deal. Type the exact hotel into the booker, and the fare you see is locked to that address.

The taxi rule, the pickup spot and the credit-card requirement are on the airport's taxi page: the $36 flat rate covers trips to the CBD or French Quarter for up to two passengers, three or more pay $15 each, taxis load at the arrivals curb outside Level 1 baggage claim at Door 7, and every taxi must accept credit cards. The same airport site lists the bus on its public transportation page: the RTA Airport Express (route 202) serves downtown, with stops including the Union Passenger Terminal, and pickup is at baggage claim Door 2, zones B4 and B5.

How ride apps work at MSY

Ride-app pickups are on the middle curb outside Level 1 baggage claim. The airport's instructions are specific: Lyft riders exit Doors 7 to 9, cross the walkway to the middle curb and join the queue; Uber riders exit Doors 9 to 11 and do the same. Both apps use a verification step with the first driver in line, a four-digit code for a standard Lyft ride and a six-digit PIN for UberX, and the airport reminds riders to check the vehicle and driver against the app before they get in.

The airport also states that soliciting ground transportation is illegal. If a stranger inside the terminal offers you a ride, decline politely and walk to the taxi stand, the ride-app curb or your pre-booked driver.

Is there a free shuttle from MSY to the hotel?

Only for hotels near the airport. The airport describes courtesy shuttles for off-airport parking, hotels and motels in the immediate vicinity, which load outside baggage claim Doors 1 to 5. Those shuttles serve their own hotels and do not run to the French Quarter or the CBD.

If your hotel is downtown, the choices are the RTA bus, a taxi, a ride app or a pre-booked car. A shared van is a fifth option, but it adds stops and time. For the broader comparison across cities, see our guide to airport transfer versus taxi versus rideshare.

When the taxi or the bus is the better choice

The flat taxi fare is the best-defined price on this page, and for one or two people heading to a CBD hotel on a quiet afternoon it is hard to beat. The bus costs less still and ends near the Union Passenger Terminal, but you finish with a walk or a connection, which is awkward with a wheeled case after a long day.

Where a car earns its place is at the margins: a party of four or more, a pile of conference luggage, a landing at 23:30, a hotel that is hard to reach, or any trip where you want to be told exactly where the driver is before you land. A private car also removes the question of what the flat fare will be after a surcharge, a delay or a change of destination.

The French Quarter: the last half-mile

The Quarter, known locally as the Vieux Carré, was laid out long before cars. Streets are narrow, many are one-way, and delivery trucks, carriages and pedestrians share them. Tell the driver the hotel's name and street, not only the neighbourhood, and let the hotel confirm the best approach. Hotels at the edge of the Quarter, in the CBD, are usually easier to reach than hotels in the middle of it.

During festivals, parades and major events the city closes streets and limits access. For a 2025 event, for example, the city's announcement allowed only residents, hotel guests, people going to restaurants or events, taxis, limousines and small buses to enter the Quarter's closed zone. Closures change from event to event, so check the City of New Orleans announcements for your dates, carry your hotel confirmation, and expect a longer last stretch on weekends.

Arrival logistics at MSY

The terminal is compact, with baggage claim on Level 1. A driver booked with Onroutz.ca waits inside arrivals with a name board if you ask for meet and greet, or sends the exact pickup point once you have landed; for privacy the board can carry an alias. We follow the flight from departure, so a delay moves the pickup. After an international landing there are 60 minutes of free waiting; after a domestic landing, 30. The 24/7 desk can help if a flight is cancelled or rebooked.

Onroutz.ca is a transfer desk based in Toronto. In New Orleans the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured US-licensed local partner, and Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices it from Toronto: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old.

Late arrivals, groups and conventions

New Orleans is a late-night city, so late landings are normal, and the bus network and the flat-rate taxi line are thinner at midnight than at noon. A pre-booked car with flight tracking is the dependable option for a landing after 22:00.

  • Groups. The Luxury SUV is the right size for up to six people and five to six large bags, and the Executive Sprinter handles 12 people and 12 bags for a wedding party or a conference team. Mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats are available on request. See Sprinter van with driver and wedding guest shuttles.
  • Conventions. Large meetings at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center fill CBD hotels, so book early when your dates match a show.
  • Children. Child, toddler and booster seats can be added at booking.
  • Privacy. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, and NDAs are available on request.

Browse the fleet to compare classes. Models are "or similar" and confirmed at booking. If you are arriving by cruise or by train rather than by air, start from the cruise transfers hub or the rail transfers hub.

Storm season and the weather

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November. Most trips are unaffected, but a named storm can close airports and change plans quickly. Summer thunderstorms are more common and slow the interstate for an hour or so. Tell the desk early if your flight is rebooked; the cancellation steps below are counted from the scheduled pickup, so an early message protects your booking.

The trip back to MSY

For the return, allow for the interstate and for airport security, and ask the hotel's bell desk about its usual pickup lead time. The departure leg can share one booking with your arrival, so both rides appear on a single confirmation. New Orleans pairs naturally with other Southern and Gulf stops; see the hotel transfers hub, the USA hub and the Miami Beach hotel transfers page.
