Almost nobody drives from Toronto to New York City for fun. They fly, which takes about an hour and a half in the air, or they take the Maple Leaf train, which takes most of a day. A private car fills the gap that those two leave: a family of five with six suitcases, a wedding party, a team with equipment, a traveller who dislikes flying, or anyone who wants a single vehicle from the front door in Toronto to a hotel on Manhattan's west side without a border queue at an airport.
This page treats the trip as it is: roughly 800 km, nine or ten hours with the border, and a series of decisions about documents, timing and the route. It also covers the other direction, because "car service to Toronto" from New York is a real search with its own set of questions. When you are ready, check your fixed fare: the booker shows the all-in price for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
Cross-border trips between Toronto and the United States run from Toronto: a Toronto-to-New York trip is driven by the Onroutz.ca fleet and chauffeurs, dispatched from Toronto, and so is the return from New York to Toronto. One booking, one confirmation, one invoice and a 24/7 desk.
How far is Toronto from New York City by car?
Toronto to New York City is about 800 km (500 mi) by road, typically 8 h 30 to 9 h 30 of driving plus the border and stops, so 9 to 10 h 30 door to door. The route runs through Niagara or Buffalo and then across upstate New York on the Thruway and I-87, entering the city from the north.
The border is the variable. On a quiet midweek morning, a car can clear it in minutes; on a holiday weekend or when systems are slow, waits stretch to an hour or more. Build the plan around the possibility of both.
The route, stage by stage
- Toronto to the border. The QEW runs from Toronto around the head of Lake Ontario and down to the Niagara Peninsula, about 130 km to Niagara Falls and 160 km to Fort Erie. Three crossings suit passenger cars: the Rainbow Bridge at Niagara Falls, the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge and the Peace Bridge at Fort Erie.
- Crossing into the United States. According to the Peace Bridge's own site, tolls are collected only for Canada-bound traffic, so U.S.-bound crossings there are free. The site also publishes live lane and wait information. Choose the crossing on the day, using wait times.
- Buffalo to Albany. From Buffalo the New York State Thruway (I-90) runs east across the state. This is the long, steady stretch, where the car settles at the speed limit for hours.
- Albany to New York City. From Albany the Thruway (I-87) heads south along the Hudson River Valley toward the city. The final approach through the Hudson Valley suburbs and into the city can add significant time at peak.
- Arrival. Manhattan hotels and addresses are reached from the north and west. Give the booker your exact address so the fare reflects your door.
Toronto to New York City: options compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car, SUV or Sprinter | 9 – 10 h 30 including the border | Fixed all-in fare via the booker, quoted before you pay | Executive Sedan 2 large + 2 cabin; Luxury SUV 5–6 large; Sprinter 12 | Families, groups, equipment, heavy luggage, privacy |
| Amtrak Maple Leaf train | About 12 h 30 Toronto to Penn Station; one departure daily | Varies by date; see amtrak.com | Rail rules apply | A scenic, slow day with time to spare |
| Flight | About 1 h 30 airborne; with airports and the U.S. preclearance process, 5 to 6 hours | Varies by airline and date | Per airline rules | Solo or couples, tight schedules |
| Drive yourself | 9 – 10 h 30 | Fuel, tolls, parking in Manhattan | Whatever the car holds | People who need their own car in the U.S. |
The Maple Leaf figure comes from Amtrak's own page, which lists a running time of about 12 hours 30 minutes and one daily departure from Toronto Union Station through Niagara Falls, Buffalo, Albany and the Hudson Valley to New York Penn Station. The same page lists Maple Leaf service adjustments effective October 17-18, 2026, so check the current timetable. Flight and drive times are planning figures.
When the train or the flight is the better choice
For one or two people with light luggage and a firm schedule, flying is faster. The time in the air is short, and the airports on both sides are well served by Pearson and the three New York airports. Arrivals in New York still involve a ride into Manhattan, which our JFK, LaGuardia and Newark pages cover. If your schedule is flexible and you like trains, the Maple Leaf is a legitimate and pleasant way to cross the border, though it runs once a day and takes most of one.
When a private car wins
- Families and groups. Three to six passengers fit a Luxury SUV with five to six large bags; up to 12 passengers and 12 bags fit an Executive Sprinter. See Sprinter van with driver.
- Moving, shipping or touring. Instruments, display materials and sporting equipment do not suit an airline's baggage rules.
- Children. Seats for babies, toddlers and older children are provided when requested at booking. For a nine-hour day, that matters more than the vehicle's badge.
- Awkward schedules. A car can leave at 4 a.m. or stop on request. Tell the desk what you need.
- Privacy. No photographs of passengers and no posts about trips; an NDA is signed whenever you ask. For a delegation or a family that wants to avoid a public journey, it is a quiet way to cross.
- A single hand-off. One vehicle, one driver, one confirmation from your door to your hotel.
Crossing the border: documents and rules
Entry rules are set by the governments, not by us, and they change. For Canadian citizens aged 16 and over, the Government of Canada's travel advice for the United States says a valid passport or a Trusted Traveller Program card is required for land and water entry; younger Canadians have alternatives. It also notes that most U.S. ports of entry use facial recognition on entry and departure, that officers may examine electronic devices, that cash or monetary instruments over US$10,000 must be declared, and that you must not carry cannabis across the border in any form, even to a state where it is legal.
Visitors who are not Canadian citizens should confirm what applies to them. The Visa Waiver Program, described on CBP's website, covers visa-free stays of up to 90 days for citizens of eligible countries, with ESTA determining eligibility to travel; nationals who are not eligible need a U.S. visa. Check CBP and the U.S. State Department for the specific rules on a land crossing, and for your return to Canada, check whether you need an eTA or visa for Canada.
Every passenger in the car is responsible for carrying the right documents. The chauffeur will take the group to the crossing, but cannot vouch for anyone's entry.
Border wait times: what to watch
Canada Border Services Agency publishes live wait times for crossings into Canada on its border wait-times page; that page does not include road delays on the way to the port of entry. For U.S.-bound traffic, the Peace Bridge publishes live lane and wait information on its own website. The desk and the chauffeur watch both, and choose the crossing and the timing with the party's schedule in mind. Long weekends and Friday afternoons are busiest in both directions.
Car service to Toronto from New York City
The reverse trip is just as common: a business traveller finishing in New York, a family returning from a week in the city, a delegation heading to Toronto for a conference. A New York-to-Toronto run is dispatched from Toronto, so the car comes down to you and takes you home. Everything above applies in reverse. On the Canadian side, you need to be admissible to Canada, which for many foreign visitors means a valid eTA or visa; see our guide to arriving in Toronto and the Government of Canada's eTA page, which lists the fee at CAN$7.
Within New York itself, trips between hotels, airports and venues are a different service, delivered by U.S.-licensed partners; see our New York City limousine page and Teterboro private aviation.
Breaking the journey
Nine hours is not for everyone. A natural split is an overnight in Niagara Falls, Buffalo or the Finger Lakes, with the second leg after a proper breakfast. A multi-day itinerary sits on one booking. The first leg can include the Falls themselves; see Toronto to Niagara Falls and Toronto to Buffalo airport.
Vehicles and the chauffeur
Vehicle classes are shown as "or similar", with the model confirmed at booking: Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar, up to 3 passengers), First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar, up to 3), Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar, up to 6) and Executive Sprinter (up to 12). Ask for a Maybach, Rolls-Royce, stretch or armoured car and the desk confirms availability with the booking. Vehicles and chauffeurs are licensed and commercially insured, and most vehicles carry water and phone charging. The fleet page has details. Onroutz.ca is a transport service, not a security company: no armed drivers or bodyguards.
How booking works

- Choose a vehicle and see the fixed fare.
- Add child seats, luggage notes and a name for the group, plus a return if needed.
- Receive one confirmation. The Toronto desk supports the trip 24/7.
For more long-distance trips, the routes hub lists everything we run, the Canada hub and USA hub cover each side of the border, and the FAQ answers general questions.
