What is the best Shanghai airport transfer from Pudong?

The best Shanghai airport transfer from Pudong depends on your hotel. The maglev reaches Longyang Road in under eight minutes, but it ends there, so a pre-booked private car is usually better for groups, luggage and late arrivals, driving about 45 km to the Bund in roughly 60–90 minutes.

Shanghai's main international airport is on the coast, east of the city, and the city has built an unusually good set of rail links to it. That makes the decision more interesting than in most places. You can cross a large part of the distance in minutes on the maglev, and then spend longer getting to your hotel than the train took.

This guide separates the two halves of the trip, explains who the train suits and where a car is simply easier, and sets out the entry rules that changed for Canadians in 2026.

Pudong or Hongqiao: check which airport you land at

Shanghai has two airports. Pudong International Airport, code PVG, handles most international flights, including most long-haul services from North America. Hongqiao International Airport, code SHA, is closer to the city and the railway station and handles domestic and some regional flights. They are far apart, and the Shanghai government's Airport Link Line, which opened on 27 December 2024, now connects them: seven stations, 68.6 km, about 40 minutes between the airports, with trains every 14 minutes from 6 am to 10 pm, as set out in the Shanghai municipal government's announcement.

If you are connecting between the two on one day, that line, or a car, is the way. Check the airport code on your ticket, because a driver sent to the wrong airport is a full cross-city mistake.

Shanghai Disney Resortabout 25 km35–55 minBusy on weekends and holidays

These are rounded estimates for planning, and the traffic is the variable. The road network around Shanghai is extensive, with raised expressways and tunnels under the Huangpu River, and a driver chooses the route by the hour. Tolls on the route are part of the single fare we quote before you pay.

The maglev: very fast, with a catch

The Shanghai Maglev connects Pudong Airport with Longyang Road station, 30 km away, in under eight minutes at a top speed of 431 km/h. According to the Pudong district government's transport page, trains run every 15 minutes until 5 pm and every 20 minutes afterwards, between about 6:45 am and 9:40 pm, with a standard single fare of 50 yuan. That page dates from 2017, so check the fare and hours at the station before you rely on them.

The catch is the endpoint. Longyang Road is a metro interchange for Lines 2 and 7, not a hotel district. From there you walk between platforms with your bags, ride the metro for 30 to 45 minutes and often walk or take a taxi at the far end. For a traveller with one wheeled case heading to a hotel next to a Line 2 stop, that is a good trip. For anyone else, the clock saved on the train is spent at the other end.

When the maglev or the metro is the better choice

We would send you to the train in four situations: you travel alone with a light bag, you land in daylight, your hotel is within a short walk of a Line 2 or Line 7 station, and you are curious about the maglev itself. Anything that makes the interchange harder, such as stairs with a heavy case, a stroller or a large group, argues the other way.

If you are going to Hongqiao Airport or the railway station for an onward connection, the Airport Link Line is a clean option. It runs about 40 minutes between the airports, which beats the road at rush hour.

When a pre-booked private car is the better choice

  • Three or more travellers. A Luxury SUV carries up to six, and an Executive Sprinter up to twelve.
  • Heavy luggage. Trade-show samples and family cases are not suited to a platform change.
  • Children. Add a child seat at booking; infant, toddler and booster sizes are available.
  • Late arrivals. Metro and maglev services end in the evening, and the maglev's last departure is about 9:40 pm.
  • First visit to China. A named driver, a confirmed vehicle and a fixed fare remove several decisions.
  • Business. You arrive at the meeting with your day intact.

The fleet page shows each class, and the airport transfer versus taxi versus rideshare guide explains the wider comparison.

Entry rules for Canadians in 2026

China introduced visa-free entry for Canadian and UK passport holders for stays of up to 30 days, in effect from 17 February 2026 to 31 December 2026, according to the Shanghai government's policy notice. The notice does not list the purposes covered, so check with the Chinese embassy or consulate whether your reason for travelling, particularly business activity beyond meetings, is within the scheme, and what happens after the end of the year if you are travelling later.

Practical points for a first arrival: carry your hotel's address in Chinese characters, because most drivers read Chinese and not English; arrange a data plan or eSIM before landing; and expect the immigration queue to be longer at peak times in the morning. A pre-booked car takes the language and payment friction out of the first hour, because the fare is settled in advance.

Late flights, early departures and the rail timetable

Rail links here are excellent in the middle of the day and thin at the edges. The published maglev hours end at 9:40 pm, and the Airport Link Line's last trains leave at 10 pm. Many long-haul flights from North America land in the late evening or early morning, which is outside those windows or close to them. For departures the pattern reverses: an early morning flight means leaving the hotel before the first train, so a car is the only reliable way to be at the terminal two to three hours before departure.

When you book a departure, give the terminal if you know it and the flight time, and we set the pickup time against the day's likely traffic. For Pudong, a hotel in the old French Concession area needs a longer margin than one in Lujiazui. If the flight is in the evening, leave a buffer for the tunnels and raised roads, which back up at the end of the working day.

What happens when you land at Pudong

Every airport pickup is flight-tracked. We allow 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing, 30 after a domestic landing and 15 on other pickups, which covers a long immigration queue. Your chauffeur meets you at the arrivals exit with a name board, with an alias on request, or the desk sends a pickup point by message. A meet and greet is available if you want someone with you from the exit to the car.

Pudong has two main terminals. The desk takes the terminal from your flight number and re-checks it if the airline changes it. If your flight lands early, the clock does not start until you land.

Disney, day trips and the high-speed train

Shanghai Disney Resort is the closest large destination to the airport, and the Airport Link Line has a Shanghai International Resort station on it. If your family is flying in for the park, a car with child seats is easy to arrange. For Suzhou, Hangzhou and the water towns, the high-speed train from Hongqiao Railway Station is the fastest way between cities, and we say so. A car makes sense for a day of stops with a chauffeur who waits, and for a group with equipment. Ask about a personal driver for a full day.

Business, trade shows and the Import Expo

Shanghai hosts a heavy calendar of trade shows and conferences. The China International Import Expo is usually held in Hongqiao in early November, and many other fairs fill hotels across the city. For delegations, we plan arrival waves as one operation, with a lead chauffeur and clear meeting points. See trade show transportation and corporate events. If your trip also includes the Canton Fair in Guangzhou, see the Canton Fair page, and for travel through Beijing or Hong Kong, the Beijing page and the Hong Kong page.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Shanghai Pudong Airport from the city centre?

About 45 km to the Bund and People's Square. The drive takes 60–90 minutes in normal traffic. The maglev covers 30 km to Longyang Road in under eight minutes, but you still need a metro or taxi leg afterwards.

How much is the maglev from Pudong Airport?

The Pudong government's transport page lists a standard single fare of 50 yuan, a round trip within seven days at 80 yuan and VIP single and round-trip fares. The page dates from 2017, so confirm at the station.

Is there a train between Pudong and Hongqiao airports?

Yes. The Airport Link Line opened on 27 December 2024, with seven stations, about 40 minutes between the airports and trains every 14 minutes between 6 am and 10 pm.

Do Canadians need a visa for China in 2026?

Canadian passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 30 days from 17 February to 31 December 2026, according to the Shanghai government notice. Check the embassy for covered purposes and any extension.

How much is a taxi from Pudong Airport?

Metered taxis charge by distance and time, with tolls extra, and the fare varies with traffic and the hotel's location. The booker shows our fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.

Should I tip a driver in China?

Tipping is not customary in mainland China, and drivers do not expect it. Thanks and a clear address matter more.

Can I be met inside arrivals?

A name-board meet and greet is available on request, with an alias on the board for privacy. Otherwise your chauffeur waits at the arrivals exit and messages you.

What if my flight lands early or late?

Flights are tracked, so the chauffeur adjusts. After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting.

Can you take me straight to Disney?

Yes. The park is about 25 km from the airport. Tell the desk the number of travellers and ages so the right vehicle and seats are arranged.
