What do you need to cross the Canada-US border by car?

A valid passport is the safest document in both directions. Canadians aged 16 and over entering the US by land need a passport or a Trusted Traveler card; US citizens entering Canada by land are asked for a passport but can use other proof of identity and citizenship. Everyone in the vehicle needs acceptable ID. Information as of October 2026.

The question people search is usually "how long is the wait", but the question that stops a trip is "did I bring the right document". Wait times can be checked from the driver's seat. A missing document cannot.

This guide covers both directions, because a Toronto trip to Buffalo or Niagara Falls, New York, involves a Canadian exit and a US entry, and the way back reverses that. It then looks at the three bridges you are most likely to use on the Niagara frontier, shows a snapshot of what the official sources displayed on a Saturday evening in October 2026, and explains how to read live data and when it pays to change crossing.

The snapshot is a single moment, not an average. I did not find typical waits by hour on either agency's pages, and I have not invented any. What you can do is use the live tools correctly and plan around the patterns they show.

Documents for Canadians entering the United States

The Government of Canada's travel advice for the United States (page last updated 9 October 2026) lists the following for Canadians:

  • By land or water: travellers 16 and older need a valid passport or a Trusted Traveler Program card valid for the stay.
  • Children 15 and under: a passport, a birth certificate (original or copy) or an original citizenship certificate.
  • By air: a passport valid for the duration of the stay, or a valid NEXUS card used at self-serve kiosks at designated airports.
  • Biometrics: most ports of entry use facial recognition to verify identity, and some travellers must also provide digital fingerprints.
  • Longer stays: a visit longer than 30 days requires registration with the US government.
  • Scrutiny: officers may search electronic devices and may ask for proof of ties to Canada, the purpose of the trip and sufficient funds.

You can read the full text on the Government of Canada's United States travel advice. Canadians do not need an ESTA, which applies to Visa Waiver Program countries.

For the return, US Customs and Border Protection's guidance on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative lists accepted documents for US citizens at land and sea crossings as a passport, a passport card, an enhanced driver's licence or a Trusted Traveler card. Air travel requires a passport book, and children must present their own passport when flying.

Documents for US citizens entering Canada

The Canada Border Services Agency's page on travel documents says that US citizens arriving by land should travel with a valid passport, since it is the only document universally accepted. Other documents work: a birth certificate, a certificate of citizenship or naturalisation, or a US enhanced driver's licence, and you can combine documents if no single one shows your full name, date of birth and citizenship.

  • NEXUS members can use the card to enter Canada, and should carry a passport or proof of permanent residence in case they have to prove citizenship.
  • US lawful permanent residents arriving by land present their permanent resident card and do not need to show a passport.
  • Children under 18 need acceptable identification, copies of any custody documents, and arrival in the same vehicle as the child. If you share custody and the other parent is not travelling with you, or if you are not the parent or legal guardian, carry a consent letter with the custodial parents' or guardians' full name, address and phone number. A notarised letter can help avoid delays.

No eTA or visa is required for US nationals. For other nationalities, the eTA guide explains who needs one before arriving. Visitors who fly into Toronto and then drive to the US still need whatever the US requires for their passport.

The three Niagara crossings compared

Toronto to the US border on the Niagara frontier is about 130 km (80 mi) to the Niagara Falls bridges and about 155 km (96 mi) to the Peace Bridge at Fort Erie, measured from downtown Toronto. Without traffic that is roughly 1 h 35 min and 1 h 50 min (OpenStreetMap road-routing data, free-flow). From there, Buffalo Niagara International Airport is a short drive on the US side.

Lewiston-QueenstonQueenston, Ont. to Lewiston, N.Y.Cars and trucksNo delay for cars

The Canada Border Services Agency's border wait times page lists these Niagara crossings with a separate column for travellers and for commercial traffic, each with an "updated" timestamp. Its figures for 10 October 2026 at about 17:20 EDT were: no delay for travellers at Queenston-Lewiston, 14 minutes at Rainbow Bridge, and 8 minutes at the Peace Bridge. It adds that its times do not include delays on the roads leading to the border, which matters at the Falls on a summer weekend.

The Peace Bridge Authority showed at 5:40 pm that day 7 of 12 car lanes open, no delay in the US section, 11 minutes in the Canada section, and one of two NEXUS lanes open in each direction. It states that tolls are collected Canada-bound only, and that E-ZPass users save 50% on the toll. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission marks the Whirlpool Bridge as NEXUS-only, says real-time data is not available for it because it updates hourly, and displayed 16 minutes for cars at Rainbow toward Canada.

Treat those numbers as a sample of a quiet-ish Saturday evening, nothing more. The two sources disagreed by a few minutes at both bridges, which is normal when readings are taken at different points and times.

How do you check live border wait times?

Use the sources in this order, and check twice.

  1. The CBSA wait times page for the Canadian side, which lists the Niagara crossings.
  2. The US Customs and Border Protection tool, linked from its advisories and wait times page, which describes the border tool as providing estimated wait times for northern and southern crossings.
  3. The bridge operators (Peace Bridge Authority and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission) for lane counts and local conditions.
  4. A second check 30 minutes before the border, not just at home. Queues can build quickly after a flight bank or an event.

Be clear on direction. A crossing's wait to enter the US is measured separately from its wait to enter Canada, and the figures posted for one do not tell you about the other.

Which crossing should you pick?

Choose by destination, not by habit.

  • Going to Buffalo airport or the Buffalo area: the Peace Bridge is closest to the airport on the US side. The Toronto to Buffalo airport page covers the drive of about 170 km (105 mi) from downtown Toronto, roughly 2 h 15 min without traffic or border queue.
  • Going to Niagara Falls, New York, or the Falls viewing areas: Rainbow Bridge is the direct link between the two Falls. For the opposite direction, from a Buffalo arrival into Canada, see Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls.
  • Heading further south, such as New York City: the Lewiston-Queenston or Peace Bridge routes both feed US highways, and the Toronto to New York City route is the long-haul option.
  • Holding a NEXUS card: use the NEXUS lanes where open, and note that the Whirlpool Bridge is NEXUS-only.

A better crossing for the time of day can save an hour when one bridge is backed up and another is not, but only if the detour is short. Toronto to the Falls bridges is about 130 km (80 mi); a shift from one bridge to another along the frontier costs minutes on the road, not hours.

Car, train or bus for the Niagara run?

For the Toronto to Niagara leg the choice is between a train, a coach and a car. The GO Train to Niagara Falls versus driving guide covers the Canadian side. A through-ride from Toronto to Buffalo airport or another American destination by car stays simple: one vehicle, one crossing, no change at the border. For families, that also means children and bags stay in the vehicle until the officer asks for documents.

What a driver and a vehicle add at the border

When a private car crosses with you, nothing changes about the rules: every passenger must carry acceptable ID, children need the right documents, and the officer decides on entry. What a pre-booked vehicle changes is logistics. Pickup is where you are, the driver sets the route and the crossing, and the schedule is built around the flight or appointment on the far side. Flight tracking works on the airport leg, so a delayed landing in Buffalo does not leave you without a car.

Onroutz.ca runs Toronto cross-border trips from Toronto, with US-licensed partners handling US domestic trips. The Niagara Falls limousine page and the Toronto to Niagara Falls transfer page cover the nearer end of the same corridor, and the routes hub lists the city-to-city options.

A pre-trip checklist

  1. Passports or accepted documents for every traveller, including children.
  2. NEXUS cards, if you have them, and a passport as a backup.
  3. Consent letters for children travelling without both parents. The NEXUS application guide and the Global Entry versus TSA PreCheck guide cover the trusted-traveller programmes.
  4. Wait times checked at home and again 30 minutes out.
  5. A plan for what you are carrying, because officers may ask.
  6. Your return plan, since the way back has its own documents and wait.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a passport to go to Canada?

For air travel, yes. For land travel, US citizens can use other proof of identity and citizenship, although the Canada Border Services Agency recommends a passport. Non-US visitors may need a visa or an eTA depending on nationality.

Do you need a passport to drive from Canada to the US?

Canadians aged 16 and over need a valid passport or a Trusted Traveler Program card for land and water crossings. Children 15 and under can use a birth certificate or citizenship certificate as an alternative to a passport.

What are the Peace Bridge wait times right now?

The live figure changes by the minute, so check the Peace Bridge Authority site and the CBSA and CBP wait-time tools. On the evening of 10 October 2026, the CBSA showed 8 minutes for travellers and the bridge site showed 11 minutes in the Canada section.

How long is the wait at Rainbow Bridge?

At about 17:20 EDT on 10 October 2026, the CBSA page showed 14 minutes for travellers and the bridge commission showed 16 minutes for cars toward Canada. Those are single readings and not averages.

Which Niagara crossing is quickest?

There is no permanent answer. On the evening snapshot, Queenston-Lewiston showed no delay for travellers. The right habit is to check all three live sources before you leave and again about 30 minutes before the border.

Do tolls differ between the bridges?

Tolls differ by bridge and direction. The Peace Bridge states that tolls are collected Canada-bound only and that E-ZPass gives 50% off. Check the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission site for its toll page, since it was not listed on the page I opened.

Can I take a car from Toronto to Buffalo airport?

Yes. The drive is about 170 km (105 mi) from downtown Toronto and takes roughly 2 hours 15 minutes without traffic, before any border queue. A pre-booked car crosses with you, tracks your flight and drops you at the departures door.

What if my child is travelling with one parent?

Carry a consent letter with the other parent's name, address and phone number, plus any custody documents. The Canada Border Services Agency says a notarised letter can help avoid delays, and the child must arrive in the same vehicle as the traveller.
