How do UK travellers apply for ESTA, and what does it actually do?

ESTA is the online authorisation that lets eligible British passport holders fly to the US under the Visa Waiver Program for stays of 90 days or less. You apply on the official CBP site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, or its mobile app. Approval is permission to board, not a promise of entry.

Start with the distinction that trips people up. US Customs and Border Protection describes ESTA as an automated system that decides whether you are eligible to travel to the US under the Visa Waiver Program. It does not decide whether you are admissible. That judgement is made by a CBP officer when you arrive, which is why a valid ESTA can still end at a refusal desk if your answers or your story do not hold together.

The Visa Waiver Program also has a document rule that is easy to miss: since April 2016 every traveller must have an e-passport, meaning one with the chip symbol on the cover, and the passport needs a machine-readable zone on the photo page. A British passport issued in the last decade meets this, but check before you apply if yours is old or damaged.

Only one place should receive your details. The UK government's own US entry guidance names the official website and the ESTA Mobile app (Android and iOS) as the way to apply. Any search result that asks you to pay "processing" on a differently named domain is a middleman, and you can avoid it by typing the CBP address yourself.

What does ESTA cost, and why do quoted prices vary?

The fee is set by US federal law and has changed recently. CBP's own FAQ ("ESTA Fee Increase") lists the fee rising from US$40.00 to US$40.27, and it can be adjusted again. Do not rely on any article for the exact figure, including this one. The payment screen on the official site shows the amount before you confirm, and CBP's own FAQ simply says you need a credit card to pay the associated fees.

The practical point is that lookalike sites add their own "service fee" on top of the government charge. If the total looks higher than the amount shown on esta.cbp.dhs.gov, you are on the wrong page.

How long is ESTA valid, and when do you need a new one?

An approved ESTA is typically valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Within that window you can make repeated trips, each of up to 90 days.

You need a new application in four situations, all listed by CBP:

  • you get a new passport
  • you change your name
  • your citizenship changes
  • the answer to any of the yes or no eligibility questions changes

The one most British travellers miss is the first. If you renewed your passport after your last ESTA, the old authorisation is attached to the old passport number and will not work. The gov.uk US page also warns that your ESTA may need replacing if it lacks the selfie photo CBP now requires, so open your ESTA account and check before you fly, not at the check-in desk.

How early should you apply?

CBP's advice is to apply as soon as you begin planning, or before you buy airline tickets. There is no official minimum lead time on the CBP page, and the UK government page also gives none. Treat that as a signal: most applications are answered quickly, but a minority are held for review, and nobody can promise you which one you will be.

A sensible rule is to apply when the flights are booked and no later than a week before departure for anything with a prepaid hotel, cruise or tour attached. Do not wait until the airline asks at check-in. Airlines verify ESTA electronically before they let you board, and a missing authorisation at the desk is the most expensive version of this mistake.

Group trips deserve a note. Each person needs their own ESTA, including children, and the name on the authorisation must match the passport used. When a family books a transfer from the airport, confirm the number of travellers and the luggage count against what you have actually approved.

Who cannot use ESTA?

The UK government lists the cases clearly. You may be ineligible if you have been arrested, even without a conviction, have a criminal record, have previously been refused admission or deported from the US, or have overstayed on an earlier ESTA trip. You normally cannot apply if you were in Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen on or after March 2011, or if you travelled to or were in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021.

If any of those apply, the answer is a visa, not a second attempt at ESTA. Using ESTA while ineligible can lead to detention and removal. Business visits are another grey area: an ESTA may not cover all business travel, particularly work on behalf of a US company, so read the official rules before you rely on it for a working trip.

British and US dual nationals have a separate obligation. They must enter and leave the United States on a US passport, and carry a British passport or certificate of entitlement to return to the UK.

What happens in the arrivals hall at JFK, Miami and Orlando?

After landing you follow the signs for immigration and CBP inspection, answer the officer's questions and have your photo taken, with fingerprints added in many cases. The gov.uk guidance adds that officials may ask to inspect your electronic devices, emails, texts and social media, and that refusing can lead to delay or denial of entry. They may also ask about the purpose of your trip, where you are staying and your return flight, so have the first night's address ready.

There is one tool worth knowing. CBP's Mobile Passport Control app is free and now accepts returning Visa Waiver Program travellers with an approved ESTA, alongside US citizens and other groups. CBP lists JFK, Miami and Orlando among the airports where it works. You create a profile with your passport details before you travel, and after landing you pick your airport and terminal, take a selfie and answer the inspection questions. Up to 12 people can be added on one device. The submission window opens up to four hours before arrival, and you then join the dedicated Mobile Passport Control line to finish with an officer.

It does not replace ESTA, and it does not guarantee a short queue. It does move you to a separate, usually shorter line.

What a driver can and cannot do at US arrivals

A private driver cannot enter the federal inspection area, speed you through CBP or sit in on your interview. What the car can do is wait on the right side of the process. Every airport pickup we run is flight-tracked, and international arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, which is designed to absorb a long queue at inspection. A name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request, and many travellers prefer an alias on the board for privacy.

Check your fixed fare

For first-time visitors this matters most at Orlando, where the walk from the gate to the baggage hall and the arrivals curb is long and families with strollers arrive in waves. Our Orlando International transfers page explains the terminal logic, and Miami International covers the Miami side. Both sit under the USA hub, and the airport transfer hub lists the rest.

JFK to Manhattan after you clear: comparing your options

JFK is about 30 km (18 mi) from Midtown. By road the trip takes roughly 35 minutes without traffic (OpenStreetMap road-routing data, free-flow), and a weekday late afternoon will push it well past that. For yellow taxis, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission publishes a flat fare from JFK to Manhattan of US$70 as of 2026, with surcharges, tolls and the tip on top, and a US$5 rush-hour surcharge from 4 pm to 8 pm on weekdays.

The yellow-taxi flat fare is competitive when two people share a ride. The private car earns its place with three or more people, large bags, a child seat or a late flight, because the fare does not move with traffic and the driver is waiting when you walk out. Our JFK to Manhattan page shows the route and terminal pickup detail, and the JFK AirTrain guide covers the rail option.

Common ESTA mistakes British travellers make

The first is applying through a third-party site and paying twice. The second is an old ESTA tied to an expired passport. The third is a wrong answer to the eligibility questions, usually about a past arrest, that later becomes a refusal.

The fourth is assuming ESTA covers every trip. A cruise starting in the US, a connection in Miami and a hotel booked in Orlando all fall under the same rule: you need the authorisation before you board anything that takes you to the US. The fifth is arriving with a cheap one-way ticket and no hotel address, because officers are entitled to ask.

Our guide to how private airport transfers work explains the pickup sequence step by step. Keep a printed or saved copy of your ESTA approval, your return ticket and the address of your first hotel in your carry-on. It takes thirty seconds and saves an argument.

Frequently asked questions

How much does ESTA cost for UK citizens?

The fee is set by US federal law; CBP's FAQ lists it rising from US$40.00 to US$40.27, and it can be adjusted again. The exact amount appears on the official payment page before you confirm. If a site shows a higher total, it has added its own fee, and you should leave and use esta.cbp.dhs.gov.

How long does ESTA take to be approved?

CBP does not publish a guaranteed time. It advises applying as soon as you start planning, because some applications are held for review. Most travellers find out quickly, but you should not leave it to the week of departure for a trip with prepaid hotels, tours or a cruise.

How long is ESTA valid for UK citizens?

Typically two years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner, and you can make several trips of up to 90 days each in that period. A new passport, new name or a changed answer to the eligibility questions means a new application.

Is the ESTA website the same as the US government site?

The official site is esta.cbp.dhs.gov, run by US Customs and Border Protection. The ESTA Mobile app is also official. Many other sites use the word ESTA in their name or advertising and charge a service fee. Type the CBP address yourself rather than clicking a paid advertisement.

Do children need their own ESTA?

Yes. Every traveller on a British passport needs a separate approved authorisation, including babies. Apply for each child individually, using the passport they will travel on.

Can I use Mobile Passport Control with an ESTA?

Yes. CBP's current page says returning Visa Waiver Program travellers with an approved ESTA can use the free Mobile Passport Control app at participating airports, which include JFK, Miami and Orlando. It adds that the app does not replace ESTA or any other required document.

Can a driver wait inside the customs area for me?

No. The federal inspection area is restricted. Your driver meets you in the public arrivals hall once you have cleared CBP and collected bags, with flight tracking and free waiting time covering the delay.

What if my ESTA is denied?

Do not apply again with changed answers. A denial means you apply for a visitor visa at a US embassy or consulate. Check the gov.uk US entry page for the current guidance and the CBP site for the denial process.
