Is the Haramain train the best way from Jeddah airport to Makkah and Madinah?
For one or two travellers with a single bag each, often yes: the Haramain station is inside the Jeddah airport terminal complex and trains run at up to 300 km/h. For families, groups or anyone with more than one 25 kg bag per person, a car with a driver is usually simpler, because it removes the station transfer at the Makkah end.
The Haramain High Speed Railway (HHR) links Makkah, Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA), King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) and Madinah along a 450 km electric line. According to HHR's own About us page, the trains have an operational speed of 300 km/h and 417 seats each (113 Business Class and 304 Economy), with a dining coach. The distances between stations on the same page read Makkah to Jeddah 77 km, Jeddah to the airport 17 km, the airport to KAEC 94 km and KAEC to Madinah 261 km.
For a pilgrim, the headline numbers matter less than the hour-by-hour reality of arriving after a long flight with family. Luggage, stations that are not at the doorstep of the Haram and the pace of the day all matter. This guide uses HHR's official pages for the facts of the train and sets them against a private car, written with respect for the purpose of the journey.
Where the stations are, and how far they are from where you are going
HHR's station pages give the practical geography:
- Airport - Jeddah: inside the Main Terminal Building at King Abdulaziz International Airport, as a transport hub linking the terminal with the high-speed network, buses, shuttles, taxis and car parking. The page was designed for the large crowds of Hajj and Ramadan. Operating hours are listed as daily 06:30 to 00:30.
- Al-Sulimaniyah - Jeddah: the city station in An Nassim district, 20 km from the airport. Daily hours are listed as 7:30 to 23:30.
- Makkah: in Ar Rusayfah district, 3.5 km from Masjid Al-Haram, with 4,750 parking spaces and hours of 06:30 to 00:30.
- Madinah: in Al Hadra district, listed as 9 km out from the city, with 1,000 parking spaces.
The Makkah figure is the one that surprises first-time pilgrims. The train takes you to the station, not to the Haram, and the last 3.5 km needs a taxi, a car or a hotel shuttle. With a station crowd at peak times, that last leg can take longer than expected.
The HHR FAQ states plainly that there are no car rental or limousine offices at the stations, though taxis are available. If you want a driver waiting at Makkah station, you arrange it before you leave home.
The luggage rule that decides the question
HHR's baggage page states that each passenger may bring one large piece of luggage of up to 25 kg and dimensions up to 65 x 55 x 35 cm (length, height, width), plus one extra item of hand luggage such as a backpack, laptop bag, camera bag, purse or nursery bag. Seats have overhead shelves for hand luggage and there are shelf stacks for the large pieces. Luggage is security-checked before access, and the terms also state that baggage is not permitted on board without a travelling customer.
For a couple travelling light, that is workable. For a family of five, each person is entitled to one bag, but each bag has to be carried or wheeled through station, security and platform. Travellers often add items on the way home: a second bag with gifts, dates or prayer items. HHR's page says passengers may bring "only" the pieces it lists, so assume an over-limit bag will not be accepted, ask HHR before you travel, and settle the plan before you pack rather than on the platform.
Children under 12 may not travel unless accompanied by an adult, and children under 2 hold a ticket without an assigned seat and share an adult's seat. Dress on board must follow the traditions of the Kingdom, smoking is prohibited in stations and on trains, and animals are not permitted.
Timing: gates, ticket offices and the first-day tiredness
The terms of travel say that ticket offices close 20 minutes before the stated departure time and that boarding gates close 10 minutes before. Those are late deadlines compared with airline check-in, but a family with children, wheelchairs or heavy bags should plan more margin. Customers must sit in the coach and seat allocated on their ticket. Tickets are named and non-transferable, and a valid ID is required.
HHR's FAQ says tickets can be booked on its mobile apps, the website, by phone or at stations. It also sets out change and cancellation fees by time before departure, with economy fares costing 10 per cent of the ticket price to change more than 24 hours ahead and 20 per cent within 24 hours until 20 minutes before departure, and business fares cheaper to change. The practical lesson: if your flight is delayed, a train ticket for a fixed time can become an expensive mistake, whereas a driver who tracks your flight waits for you.
Umrah rules to know before you book transport
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's Umrah page describes the process for visitors. The visa options listed include booking through the Nusuk platform, applying at a Saudi embassy or consulate, tourist visas (visa on arrival, e-visa or consulate visa) and a family visit visa. The Ministry also states that the pilgrim must perform Umrah in the time slot allocated by the booking in the Nusuk app, and asks non-pilgrims to refrain from performing Umrah during the days of Hajj to leave the holy sites for the pilgrims.
The Government of Canada's travel advice for Saudi Arabia states that Muslim tourists can perform Umrah with any type of visa and that non-Muslims are forbidden from travelling to the holy city of Makkah. A mixed group, such as a Muslim family with a non-Muslim friend, needs to plan separate arrangements for Makkah, and travellers should confirm current rules with the Saudi authorities before travel.
Jeddah airport to Makkah: train or car
The airport station gives you a short, simple connection: arrive, clear immigration and bags, walk to the station inside the complex, board. The rail distance from the airport station to Makkah is about 94 km (the 17 km Jeddah leg plus the 77 km Makkah leg on HHR's chart). By road from KAIA to the Haram it is about 100 km (63 mi), roughly 1 h 30 without traffic, with more time depending on checks and in the busiest seasons.
The train's advantage is that it avoids road traffic; the disadvantage is the station at the far end and the baggage rule. A car's advantage is the door-to-door sequence: from the arrivals hall to the hotel entrance near the Haram, with no station transfer. For a family with elderly parents or small children, this is often the deciding factor. Our Jeddah airport to Makkah page explains how a pickup works. The ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed local transfer partner and booked, confirmed and supported by the Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto.
Madinah: the longer leg
Madinah is a different scale of journey. The rail distance from the airport station is about 355 km (94 km to KAEC plus 261 km on to Madinah, from HHR's station chart). By road from the airport to the Prophet's Mosque the distance is longer, about 400 km (248 mi), roughly 4 h 45 without traffic, so the train's time advantage over a car is real on this leg. The station sits in Al Hadra district, 9 km from the city, and the same last-leg question applies.
Many pilgrims combine both cities in one trip, arriving at Jeddah, travelling to Makkah for Umrah and then moving on to Madinah. The route between the two holy cities along the line is 450 km, and HHR describes it as linking the two Holy Mosques. For a group, a chartered vehicle with a driver between the cities can cover luggage that exceeds the train limits. See Madinah to Jeddah airport for the return leg, and the Middle East overview for the other cities we serve.
Arriving at the airport: the first hour
Most pilgrims reach Jeddah on a long flight and land tired. The first hour is immigration, bags and finding the right door. A driver who waits inside the arrivals hall with a name board removes the guesswork about exits and the taxi queue; see our airport meet and greet service for how that works, and how private airport transfers work for the general sequence of flight tracking, waiting time and hand-off. If your party includes young children, our post on car seat rules in taxis and chauffeured cars explains what to arrange in advance.
Travellers who connect through other Gulf hubs on the way may also find our airport transfers hub useful. If your trip includes Riyadh for business before or after the pilgrimage, see our Riyadh Metro business travel guide.

When the train wins, and when a driver does
The train wins when you travel light, when you are on a fixed daytime schedule, when road traffic is the main concern and when the leg is Jeddah to Madinah. It also wins in simplicity if you have already booked an HHR ticket with a departure that matches your flight, and you are comfortable with the station experience at each end.
A car wins for groups of three or more, for travellers with mobility needs, for those carrying bags beyond one per person, for arrivals late at night, for anyone who wants flight tracking and a driver who waits if the plane is late, and when you do not want to manage a station and a taxi at the end of a long journey. Child seats can be arranged on request at booking. The cancellation terms of a train ticket also matter: if your flight is delayed or your plans change, a booked car with a driver who tracks the flight is the more forgiving arrangement.
Pilgrims who need quiet, unhurried movement between the airport, the hotel and the Haram will often use both. They take the train between the cities, where it is quickest, and arrange a driver at each end for the last stretch.
