When is cherry blossom season in Japan in 2027?

Cherry blossoms usually begin opening in Tokyo and Osaka in the last week of March and reach Sapporo in late April or May. The Japan National Tourism Organization says the bloom moves north from late March into April and ends in May in Hokkaido and the mountains. Official 2027 forecasts normally appear early in the year.

The cherry blossom season is the most seasonal trip in Japan, and its most misunderstood. People ask "when is the best week?" as if the answer were a fixed date, and then book a flight eight months ahead on the strength of an average. The honest answer is a window of about two weeks per city that moves each year by several days, in either direction, with the weather of the preceding winter and spring.

This guide is about planning around that uncertainty: what the official numbers say, how to sequence bookings so that a shifted bloom does not ruin your trip, and how to handle the airport-to-hotel and city-to-city moves that become harder in the busiest fortnight of the year.

Flowering, full bloom and what a forecast actually tells you

Japanese forecasts distinguish between two moments. The first is the day the first blossoms open on a reference tree. The second, full bloom, usually comes about a week later, when most of the blossoms on the tree are open. Petals begin to fall a week or so after that. So the period when a city looks its best is roughly the second week after the first flowering date.

This matters because the dates quoted in most English-language articles are first-flowering dates. If Tokyo's first flowering is on 24 March, the weekend that looks like the postcard is likely to be the first weekend of April.

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) publishes a cherry blossom forecast page that draws on the Japan Weather Association. It warns that forecasts are subject to change with the weather, and it gives first-bloom dates and averages. It notes that across Japan the blooms run from the latter half of March to early May.

What the 2026 numbers showed

We do not have a 2027 forecast yet. The best illustration of the typical pattern is the 2026 forecast data on JNTO's page, which gave these first-bloom dates and long-term averages:

City2026 forecast first bloomAverage first bloomTrend
Tokyo19 March24 MarchEarly
Osaka26 March27 MarchNormal
Hiroshima19 March25 MarchEarly
Sapporo19 April1 MayVery early

JNTO's page did not list Kyoto, though Kyoto's bloom is usually close to Osaka's. Use it as a rough guide only. The point of the table is not the exact date but the spread: the same city can be a week early or a week late, and Sapporo can be almost two weeks early.

JNTO's April guide adds a second piece of useful geography. The bloom starts in January in Okinawa and lasts into May in Hokkaido and in the mountains, so if you miss the peak in one place, a short train ride may take you to an area still in bloom. It names Takada Castle Site Park in Niigata, Lake Kawaguchi and Fujiyoshida near Mount Fuji, and Hirosaki Park in Aomori, whose cherry blossom festival runs from late April into early May.

When 2027 forecasts will arrive and how to use them

Forecasts are issued early in the year and updated through the spring. When we wrote this in October 2026, there was no 2027 forecast to quote, and anyone who gives you a precise 2027 date is guessing. A sensible approach is to:

  1. Book your flights for a range, not a day. Aim for 25 March to 10 April for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka if you can.
  2. Book refundable hotels first. Choose the cancellation terms before the room.
  3. Sequence your cities. Start in the city that blooms first (Tokyo, in most years) and finish in the one that blooms later, or use a trip north to stretch the window.
  4. Watch the forecast in February and March. Move your dates if the bloom shifts.
  5. Keep two or three flexible days. A rainstorm can strip a tree in a night.

Tokyo: Narita and Haneda to your hotel in bloom season

Tokyo's hotels fill early, and so do its trains. The airport run is one place where you can reduce stress.

Narita is about 70 km from Tokyo Station by road, roughly an hour without traffic, and longer at the rush hour. Haneda is much closer, about 17 km, roughly 20 minutes without traffic. If you can choose between the two airports, our Narita versus Haneda guide explains the trade-offs, and the Haneda to Tokyo page covers the shorter run.

Pre-booked private carAbout 70 km, roughly 1 h without traffic; longer at rush hourFixed fare via bookerSedan 2 large bags; SUV 5–6Families, elders, a late arrival

The taxi figures come from the Narita Airport taxi page, which lists fixed fares by Tokyo zone, before expressway tolls, with a surcharge between 22:00 and 5:00. It says advance reservations are not required, and that you should confirm the fare with the driver before you go. The train figures are not published as a single number because they depend on the station you leave from; the operators publish them. The Narita Airport rail page lists the stations each line serves.

The case for the train is straightforward. It is predictable, and in bloom season the roads are busier. The case for a private car is the arrival-day arithmetic: after a long-haul flight, with luggage, children or elderly parents, one door-to-door ride beats a platform change with bags. Our Narita to Tokyo page explains the route, and the Tokyo Station rail transfers page covers the Shinkansen end.

Kyoto and Osaka: Kansai airport to the cities

For Kyoto and Osaka, most visitors fly into Kansai International. Kyoto is the harder of the two, about 100 km by road, and the rail link is the usual choice. A limited express train connects the airport with Kyoto; check JR West's timetable for the exact time, because it is the benchmark a car has to beat. The road takes roughly 1 h 50 without traffic, and longer in bloom season.

Our Kansai airport to Kyoto page explains when a car is worth it. In short, it wins when you have a large group, heavy bags or a hotel that is a long walk from Kyoto Station. In Kyoto especially, hotels in the Higashiyama and Gion areas, close to the temples, are well away from the station, and the last mile on foot with a suitcase is no fun on crowded streets.

Between cities: bullet train, car or both

Check JR Central's timetable for Tokyo to Kyoto and Kyoto to Osaka. JR Central notes that all seats on Nozomi trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen are reserved seats during the major peak periods, which is a good reason to book early.

  • Shinkansen: the default. Reserve seats in advance, since bloom-season trains fill up. Check JR Central's reservation page for when bookings open.
  • Luggage forwarding: a ubiquitous service that sends bags ahead to your next hotel, which makes a train ride with only a day bag possible.
  • A private car for day trips: useful if you want to see several viewing spots outside the city in a day, such as Lake Kawaguchi, which the JNTO guide names for early to mid-April.

Rail passes change their price and rules over time. Check the current terms before you buy one; our guide Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it? covers how to run the numbers.

Where the crowds are and how to beat them

JNTO names the famous Tokyo viewing places: Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Ueno Park, the Meguro River in Nakameguro and Chidorigafuchi Moat near the Imperial Palace. In Kyoto and Nara, the blossoms frame ancient temples on the hillsides. Every one of them is at its most crowded on a sunny weekend afternoon at full bloom.

Practical ways around the crowd:

  1. Go early. An hour after sunrise on a weekday is a different place from noon on a Saturday.
  2. Go on a weekday. If your schedule allows, choose it over the weekend.
  3. Go slightly before or after the peak. The blossoms are still beautiful a few days either side.
  4. Look for the second-tier spots. A smaller park with fewer people beats a famous one in a crowd.
  5. Carry a small tarp and light refreshments. JNTO says that is all hanami (blossom viewing) needs.

Golden Week starts at the end of April, when much of Japan travels. If your trip runs into late April, particularly for northern Japan, plan transport and rooms around it.

Booking order: what to lock first

  1. Flights and the first and last hotel nights. These have the least flexibility.
  2. Shinkansen reservations, as soon as they open.
  3. Hotels in Kyoto, where capacity is smallest and prices move first.
  4. Airport transfers, which can be booked any time and are least dependent on the forecast.
  5. Restaurants and temple visits that require reservations.

The airport transfer is the booking that is least affected by a shift in bloom, since it depends on your flights and not on the flowers.

Mistakes we see every spring

  • Quoting the first-flowering date as "peak". Peak is about a week later.
  • Booking non-refundable hotels months ahead. The bloom can move.
  • Packing for warm weather. JNTO notes that temperatures can drop suddenly, so bring layers.
  • Forgetting hay fever. JNTO also flags pollen as a problem for allergy sufferers.
  • Cramming too many cities. Each move costs half a day in peak season.

Frequently asked questions

When do the cherry blossoms bloom in Japan?

Blooms start in southern Kyushu in late March and move north through Honshu and Hokkaido into April and May, according to JNTO. Tokyo and Osaka usually see their first blossoms around the last week of March.

Has the 2027 cherry blossom forecast been released?

Not as far as we could find in October 2026. Forecasts are normally issued early in the year and updated through spring. Treat any exact 2027 date you see now as a guess.

What is the difference between first bloom and full bloom?

First bloom is when the first blossoms open on a reference tree. Full bloom usually comes about a week later, when most blossoms are open. The best viewing days are normally the days around full bloom.

How far is Narita airport from central Tokyo?

About 70 km by road to Tokyo Station, roughly an hour by car without traffic and longer at rush hour. Haneda is much closer, at about 17 km.

How much is a taxi from Narita to Tokyo?

The airport publishes fixed fares by zone, before tolls: ¥29,000 to ¥31,000 to central wards such as Chuo and Chiyoda, and ¥31,500 to ¥32,500 to Shinjuku and Shibuya, as of 2026. A late-night surcharge applies from 22:00 to 5:00.

Is it easy to book a Shinkansen seat in cherry blossom season?

Not if you wait. Popular trains fill up in the bloom fortnight, so reserve as soon as reservations open (JR Central's reservation page gives the booking window) and keep a backup departure.

Can a private car take me from Kansai airport to Kyoto?

Yes, and it makes sense for larger groups, heavy luggage or hotels far from Kyoto Station. For a single traveller with a day bag, the limited express train is the usual choice.

How much is a private transfer in Japan?

Enter your airport, hotel and party size, and the booker displays one fixed fare before you pay. Flight tracking is standard on airport pickups, and a child seat can be added on request.
