Narita Airport to Tokyo is a trip of about 70 km / 43 mi from the terminal kerb to central Tokyo, and a private car usually covers it in 1 h to 1 h 30 outside rush hour. The same journey by train can be quicker to a station, but it ends at a platform, not at your hotel door. This page sets out every realistic way to make the trip, with the numbers, so you can decide before you land.
Onroutz.ca books the private-car option as an airport transfer from Narita to Tokyo: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice and a 24/7 desk in Toronto. In Japan the ride itself is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
What is the best way to get from Narita Airport to Tokyo?
The fastest public option is the Keisei Skyliner, which reaches Nippori in as little as 36 minutes. JR's Narita Express runs direct to Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya and Shinjuku. A private car is the door-to-door choice: about 1 h to 1 h 30 off-peak, with no transfers, for groups, heavy luggage, children or a late arrival.
There is no single best answer, because Tokyo is a city of districts and the airport is far from all of them. If your hotel is a short walk from Nippori, Ueno, Tokyo Station or a Narita Express stop, the train is hard to beat on speed. If it is anywhere else, the train leaves you with a second leg: a subway change, a taxi queue, or a walk with suitcases through a station built for commuters.
Narita Airport to Tokyo at a glance
Narita has three terminals. Terminal 1 and Terminals 2 and 3 are served by separate rail stations: Narita Airport Station for Terminal 1, and Airport Terminal 2·3 Station for the other two. The airport lists the walk from the station as roughly 5 minutes for Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and about 10 minutes for Terminal 3.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |

| Private car (Onroutz.ca) | 1 h – 1 h 30 off-peak; up to 2 h in heavy traffic | Fixed fare via booker, shown before you pay | Executive Sedan: 2 large + 2 cabin bags; Luxury SUV: 5 – 6 large bags | Groups, families, late arrivals, any hotel address |
| Keisei Skyliner | Train 36 min to Nippori, 41 min to Keisei Ueno, plus onward leg | ¥2,470 adult as of 2026 (¥2,465 with an IC card) | Racks in carriage; carry it yourself | Solo travellers staying near Nippori or Ueno |
| JR Narita Express (N'EX) | Direct train, then a short walk or subway change | Fare plus reserved-seat fee; check JR East | Luggage space in carriage | Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Shibuya or Shinjuku |
| Airport Limousine Bus | Varies with traffic, often 1 h 15 – 2 h | Per-person ticket sold at the airport bus counter | Luggage stowed under the bus | Hotels with a bus stop |
| Fixed-fare taxi (airport table) | 1 h – 1 h 30 | ¥29,000 – ¥32,500 to central wards as of 2026, plus tolls | Boot of a standard car | Short-notice, no booking |
| Local trains | 1 h 15 – 1 h 40 | Lowest public fare | Crowded at peak | Light bags, flexible timing |
The figures above are drawn from the operators' and the airport's own pages. Rail and taxi fares are third-party public prices as of 2026 and can be revised, so confirm them when you travel.
Train options from Narita to central Tokyo
Keisei Skyliner
The Skyliner is a limited express that connects Narita to Nippori and Keisei Ueno. Keisei states the run takes as little as 36 minutes to Nippori and 41 to Keisei Ueno. The published adult fare is ¥2,470, or ¥2,465 when you pay at the gate with an IC card such as PASMO or Suica. Keisei also offers a hands-free service that sends heavy luggage ahead to your accommodation the same day, which solves the stairs problem if you plan ahead.
The catch is where it ends. Nippori and Ueno are on the northeastern side of the city. For Ginza, Roppongi, Shinjuku or Shibuya you need a second train, and that is where the time you saved starts to drain away.
JR Narita Express (N'EX)
The Narita Express is JR East's direct train from both Narita stations. The airport's own rail page lists its stops as Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Yokohama, among others. Seats are reserved, there is room for luggage, and for hotels around Tokyo Station, Marunouchi or Shinagawa it is a tidy option. Fares and exact times are on the JR East site, which also sells a round-trip N'EX ticket for foreign visitors.
The ordinary JR and Keisei lines
Local and rapid services on the JR and Keisei main lines also serve the airport and reach Tokyo, Ueno, Akihabara and Nippori. They cost the least and take the longest. With two suitcases and a morning rush, they are the option most travellers regret.
Is a private car faster than the train from Narita to Tokyo?
Door to door, often yes, and rarely by much either way. A car leaves when you do. A train leaves when it leaves, and you still have a platform wait, a walk to the station, a second leg and the last stretch to the lobby. For a hotel in Ginza, Roppongi, Akasaka or Azabu, a car averaging 1 h 15 min from the kerb can tie or beat a Skyliner-plus-subway journey, especially with luggage.
Where the train wins is the 7 am to 9 am and 5 pm to 8 pm windows on weekdays. Expressways into Tokyo slow noticeably, and a car that takes 1 h on a Sunday can take 1 h 30 min or more. The Skyliner's 36 minutes do not change with traffic. To be plain about it: if you are alone, travelling light and staying beside a station on the Skyliner or N'EX route, take the train.
When a private car is the better choice
A car earns its fare in a few specific situations:
- Three or more travellers. Train and bus fares are per person. A car carries up to three in an Executive Sedan or First Class Sedan, up to six in a Luxury SUV, and up to twelve in an Executive Sprinter.
- Heavy or awkward luggage. Skis, golf bags, strollers and four large cases do not enjoy Tokyo station stairs. The car stops where you stop.
- Children and infants. Child seats come in infant, toddler and booster sizes and can be added to the booking.
- Late arrivals. Services thin out late at night, and a fixed car waiting with your flight tracked removes the guesswork.
- Business schedules. A quiet cabin, phone charging in most vehicles and a driver who knows the address mean you can work or rest.
- Privacy. A name board can carry an alias on request.
See the private transfer service page for how a booking runs, or read the guide to airport transfers versus taxis and rideshare.
What does a taxi from Narita to Tokyo cost?
Narita publishes a fixed-fare taxi table by zone, with expressway tolls charged on top. You do not need to reserve; you ask the driver before you get in. As of 2026, the airport's own fixed-fare taxi page lists these per-car fares in yen, by expressway route:
| Zone | Wards covered | Keiyo Road route | Bayshore route |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Edogawa, Katsushika, Adachi | ¥23,500 | ¥26,500 |
| B | Koto, Sumida, Minato-Daiba, Shinagawa-Higashi-yashio | ¥28,000 | ¥28,000 |
| C | Chuo, Chiyoda, Taito, Bunkyo, Arakawa | ¥29,000 | ¥31,000 |
| D | Shinjuku, Toshima, Nakano, Shibuya, Meguro, Minato, Shinagawa, Ota | ¥31,500 | ¥32,500 |
A surcharge applies between 22:00 and 05:00, and if you choose a non-expressway route the meter is used instead. Taxis queue at stand 15 at Terminal 1, stands 28 and 31-A at Terminal 2, and the taxi stand at Terminal 3. These are the taxi prices set by the airport and a licensed association, not ours. The Onroutz.ca fare is quoted separately, before you pay, and includes the expressway tolls for your route, so the figure on the confirmation is the figure you pay.
The road from Narita into Tokyo
The car route leaves the airport on the Shin-Kuko Expressway and joins the Higashi-Kanto Expressway. From there it picks either the Keiyo Road or the Bayshore route toward the Metropolitan Expressway, which carries you into the wards. The choice is the driver's call on the day, based on congestion, which is why the airport lists both columns.
Practical timing, using "about" because traffic is a live variable:
- About 70 km from the terminal to Tokyo Station area.
- 1 h – 1 h 30 on a typical off-peak weekday or weekend.
- Allow 2 h on Friday evenings, before national holidays and during the weeks around Golden Week and New Year.
- Early-morning flights usually arrive to quiet roads. Mid-afternoon arrivals into the evening rush are the slow ones.
Tokyo hotels and districts by drive time
Tokyo is not one destination, so the drive is not one number. These are typical figures from the terminal to the front door, assuming normal expressway conditions.
- Tokyo Station, Marunouchi, Nihonbashi, Ginza: about 1 h – 1 h 15 min.
- Shinagawa, Roppongi, Azabu, Akasaka: about 1 h 15 min – 1 h 30 min.
- Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ebisu: about 1 h 20 min – 1 h 45 min. For a deeper look at the northwest of the city, see Narita to Shinjuku.
- Asakusa, Ueno, Akihabara: about 1 h – 1 h 15 min, and often the one place where the Skyliner has a clear edge.
- Haneda Airport: a different trip with its own page, Narita to Haneda.
Arriving at Narita: what happens after landing
Your flight is tracked from takeoff. After an international landing the chauffeur's clock gives you 60 minutes of free waiting from the scheduled arrival; domestic flights get 30. Japanese immigration and customs are orderly, but a full wide-body can take well over an hour to clear. Nobody is hurrying you.
Meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request. The driver holds a name board, with an alias if you want one, and walks you to the car. See airport meet and greet for how it works.
Entry rules for Japan depend on your passport, so check the Japanese government's current visa-exemption list before you fly. If you also connect from the UK, Europe or North America, the same flight-tracking applies to onward bookings in the asia-pacific region.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost from Narita Airport to Tokyo?
It depends on the mode. As of 2026 the Keisei Skyliner adult fare is ¥2,470, and the airport's fixed-fare taxi table runs from ¥23,500 to ¥38,500 depending on the zone and route, plus tolls. For the Onroutz.ca private car, the booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
How can I get from Narita Airport to the city of Tokyo?
You can take the Keisei Skyliner, the JR Narita Express, JR or Keisei local trains, an airport limousine bus, a fixed-fare taxi or a pre-booked private car. The right one depends on where in Tokyo you are going, how many people travel and how much luggage you carry.
Is Narita Airport hard to get to from Tokyo?
It is far rather than hard. Narita is about 70 km from central Tokyo, and signage in English is clear. The difficulty is the second leg: most visitors do not stay at a Skyliner or Narita Express terminus, so a train often needs a change or a taxi at the end.
Is there a fast train from Narita to Tokyo?
Yes. The Keisei Skyliner reaches Nippori in as little as 36 minutes and Keisei Ueno in 41, according to Keisei. The JR Narita Express runs direct to Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Shibuya and Shinjuku, so for those stations it removes a transfer.
What is the best way to go from Narita Airport to Tokyo?
For one traveller staying beside a Skyliner or Narita Express stop, the train. For three or more people, heavy luggage, children, a late-night arrival or a hotel away from a main station, a pre-booked private car, since fares are per car and you avoid the second leg.
How much is an Uber from NRT to Tokyo?
In Japan, ride-hail apps mostly dispatch licensed taxis, so the fare follows the taxi tariff plus expressway tolls and can surge when demand is high. Narita publishes fixed zone fares for walk-up taxis. Our fixed fare is shown in the booker before you pay, with no surge.
Do I need to tip a driver in Japan?
No. Tipping is not customary in Japan, and drivers generally do not expect it. Taxi fares are paid at the end and tolls are added. With a pre-booked transfer, the total is agreed in advance, so there is nothing to calculate on arrival.
Can I book a car for a Narita pickup after a late landing?
Yes. Your flight number is tracked, so a delay moves the pickup with it. After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting from the scheduled arrival. If the flight is cancelled or you miss the connection, contact the 24/7 desk.
