How do pickups work at LAX, and where does LAX-it fit in?

At LAX, terminals sit on a one-way loop, and each pickup type has its own rules. Rideshare and taxi riders are normally sent to the separate LAX-it area by shuttle or on foot. A pre-arranged chauffeur works differently, because the driver holds a ground-transportation permit and arranges the meeting point with you by phone.

The first thing to understand about LAX is that the building you stand in and the place your ride waits are not necessarily the same. At many airports the pickup is a kerb outside the arrivals hall. At LAX the central terminal area is a loop with limited kerb space, and the airport pushes app-based rides and many taxis to a different place so that the loop moves.

That design has a real cost for the traveller. With rideshare, you leave the terminal, take a shuttle or a walk, and then wait for a car. With a pre-arranged driver you do not. Our LAX airport transfers page explains the chauffeur side, and this guide explains how the pieces fit together so you can decide which pickup suits your bags, your party and your hour.

Two cautions up front. The most detailed LAWA description of LAX-it that we could read is its 2019 launch release, which says the pickup area was planned to run until the Automated People Mover opens, so we describe it in general terms and send you to the airport's current instructions for the exact stop. And construction is changing the loop, as the next sections explain.

How the LAX terminal loop is laid out

LAX has eight numbered terminals and the Tom Bradley International Terminal, arranged along a one-way U-shaped road around the central parking structures. Departures are on the upper level and arrivals on the lower. The loop runs in one direction only, so missing your terminal means driving the whole loop again.

Most large US airlines use a home terminal or a pair of adjacent terminals along the loop, and international airlines are concentrated in the Tom Bradley International Terminal, though some use other terminals. Rather than memorise a list, use the habit that works at every big airport: read the terminal on the boarding pass, and give the same terminal to whoever is picking you up.

Walking between terminals is possible for several of them, but it is not a short stroll with bags, and the airport has operated shuttles between terminals for years. Whether you are departing or arriving, leave extra time to cross the airport if you are on a ticket with two airlines.

What LAWA says is changing: the rebuild

The agency that runs LAX, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), describes a large modernisation programme, and its public pages give some specifics.

  • Terminal 4: modernisation reached its "topping out" milestone in a May 2026 release, meaning the last structural steel beam was placed.
  • Terminal 5: will be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up.
  • Tom Bradley International Terminal: a "TBIT Refresh" is underway.
  • West Gates: these offer biometric boarding gates and a checked-bag storage system.
  • Midfield Satellite Concourse South: a new concourse of 150,000 square feet under construction.
  • Automated People Mover (SkyLink): described as an elevated train to link terminals, parking, pickup and drop-off kerbs, the Rental Car Center and Metro connections. The page gives no opening date.
  • Roadways: a Central Terminal Area arrivals and kerbs project, and roadway improvements aimed at reducing congestion.

LAWA's separate "Connecting LAX" page adds that the people mover is meant to provide access to Metro's new 96th Street and Aviation Boulevard station, which connects to the LAX/Crenshaw and Green lines, and that a new facility called ITF-West will create passenger pick-up, drop-off and parking locations.

Two practical conclusions follow. First, signage, walkways and kerb arrangements change as these projects advance, so a tip from a friend's trip last year may be out of date. Second, the people mover is described in LAWA's pages in the future tense, so check whether it is running before you plan a trip around it.

What LAX-it is, in plain terms

LAX-it is the airport's off-terminal pickup area for taxis and app-based rides. LAWA's 2019 launch release places it east of Terminal 1, at the corner of World Way and Sky Way, says riders can walk from many terminals or take a free shuttle, and says drivers still drop passengers at the departures kerb because LAX-it is for pickups only. The same release said it would operate until the Automated People Mover opens, with later arrangements to be announced, so the current stop may differ.

Treat the rest as the shape of the system, not a timetable: you go to the pickup area, wait for the vehicle to be assigned and to arrive, and the waiting depends on the time of day and the number of other riders. The first hour after a block of arrivals is slowest.

For travellers with heavy bags, children or limited mobility, LAX-it adds two steps to the journey that a chauffeured pickup does not have. For solo travellers with a backpack, it is straightforward, and the extra time is often modest off-peak.

Where a pre-arranged chauffeur meets you

A chauffeur pickup at LAX is different from a rideshare in one important way: the company and driver need a valid LAWA ground transportation permit, which LAWA administers through its operations division. The permit is what lets a company operate commercially at the airport, and the driver will tell you where the car is waiting.

The usual sequence on one of our airport pickups looks like this:

  1. You book with the flight number; our desk tracks the flight.
  2. After landing, you message the driver or follow the instructions in your confirmation.
  3. If you asked for a name board, the driver or greeter waits inside the terminal with your name or an alias.
  4. The driver takes you to the car and handles the bags.

Exact meeting points differ by terminal and change during construction, so we confirm the spot with you by message on the day. Our airport meet-and-greet page describes the inside-the-terminal option. If you are staying near the airport and want a single run to a hotel or meeting, the executive car service page covers the car and driver.

Landing to kerb: a timeline

These are our own planning allowances, not LAWA statistics. Allow the following for an international arrival, from touchdown to the car door. Domestic arrivals skip the border steps.

  • Taxi to the gate: 5 to 20 minutes, longer when the apron is busy.
  • Deplaning: 10 to 20 minutes depending on aircraft size.
  • Border check: 20 to 90 minutes at peak, shorter with Global Entry or mobile passport tools.
  • Baggage claim: 15 to 40 minutes after the belt starts.
  • Walk and pickup: 5 to 25 minutes depending on pickup type.

That sums to roughly 1 hour 15 minutes at best and 3 hours at worst for an international arrival. For domestic flights with only carry-on, 20 to 40 minutes is a reasonable window. The more the plan depends on a tight pickup, the more it helps to agree on the meeting step ahead of time. For departures, our guide to how early to get to the airport for an international flight gives the matching buffers.

Pickup options compared

Distances below are rounded road distances from OSRM. LAX is about 15 km (9 mi) from Santa Monica Pier, about 30 km (19 mi) from Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles and about 55 km (33 mi) from Disneyland, which is roughly 20, 30 and 45 minutes without traffic. The upper ends of the ranges in the table are our own peak allowance, because traffic on the 405 and 105 freeways drives them.

On Disneyland: Visit Anaheim, the destination's tourism board, notes that John Wayne Airport is the closest airport to the resort, with Ontario airport less than 35 miles away, and that LAX offers the most airlines and services. If your flight options are flexible, a landing at John Wayne can shorten the final drive. If you land at LAX, our LAX to Disneyland transfer page covers the road, and a fixed fare removes the waiting game on the way.

Departing from LAX: right terminal, right level

For departures the main LAX rule is that the airport is closed to the general public. LAWA's site says entry is limited to airline passengers, people accompanying or assisting them, and airport personnel. In practice you will see friends and family dropping off at the upper level, and the loop is busiest in the hours before the morning international banks and on Sunday evenings.

If you are sharing a ride and travellers fly different airlines, tell the driver each terminal in advance so that no one is dropped at the wrong kerb.

Mistakes that cost time at LAX

  1. Ordering the app ride before you reach the pickup area. The car will wait, and the driver may cancel.
  2. Telling the driver "the airport". At LAX, the terminal and the pickup point both matter.
  3. Assuming last year's layout. Construction has moved walkways and kerbs, and will keep doing so.
  4. Skipping the terminal check. Your boarding pass tells you which terminal to head to.
  5. Planning around the people mover without checking. LAWA describes it as a project; confirm it is running.
  6. Forgetting freeway peaks. The 405 is a different road at 5 p.m.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I get picked up by Uber at LAX?

Rideshare riders have been directed to the LAX-it area by shuttle or on foot, instead of the terminal kerb. LAWA's 2019 release says it was meant to operate until the Automated People Mover opens, so check the app and the airport's current instructions for the exact stop.

What is LAX-it?

LAX-it is the airport's separate pickup area for taxis and app-based rides, east of Terminal 1 at World Way and Sky Way according to LAWA's 2019 release. Instead of loading at the terminal kerb, riders go to this location and meet their car there, by walking or on a free shuttle.

How does a chauffeur pick me up at LAX?

A permitted chauffeur company tracks your flight and arranges the meeting point with you. If you ask for a name board, the driver or greeter waits inside the terminal with your name or an alias on it, then escorts you to the car.

How long does it take to get out of LAX after landing?

For an international arrival, allow about 1 hour 15 minutes at best and up to 3 hours at worst, depending on the border queue and baggage. A domestic arrival with only carry-on can be 20 to 40 minutes.

How far is LAX from Disneyland?

About 55 km (33 mi) by road. The drive takes roughly 45 minutes without traffic, and we allow up to 2 hours at peak, so plan the departure time around the day of the week. John Wayne Airport is closer to the resort, according to Visit Anaheim.

Is the LAX Automated People Mover open?

LAWA's pages describe the people mover (SkyLink) as an elevated train that will connect terminals, parking, pickup kerbs, the Rental Car Center and transit, and give no opening date. Check the airport's website before relying on it.

Can friends and family come into the terminals at LAX?

LAWA says entry is limited to airline passengers, people accompanying or assisting them, and airport personnel. Terminal hours vary, so check with your airline. Friends can still drop you on the upper level of the loop.
