How much should you tip in Canada?

Tipping in Canada follows a simple custom: tips are not included in menu prices or fares, and the norm is generous. Destination Toronto, the city's tourism board, says a tip of 15 to 20 percent of the pre-tax bill is standard for good service in restaurants, and that the same 15 to 20 percent range applies to personal services such as haircuts.

That single sentence is the answer for most visitors, and the rest of this guide fills in the corners. Two things make Canadian tipping different from the rest of the world: it is not optional in practice, and it is calculated before tax. A visitor from Europe or Asia, where service is often built into the price, finds this unfamiliar. An American will recognise the custom immediately.

The tax point is worth stopping on. In Ontario the Harmonized Sales Tax is 13 percent, made up of a 5 percent federal portion and an 8 percent provincial portion, according to Destination Toronto. The tourism board recommends tipping on the pre-tax amount, so you work from the subtotal rather than the final total. Plenty of people tip on the total and that is fine; what matters is that the customs are percentages, not fixed amounts.

Also worth noting: the official guidance itself gives slightly different ranges in different places. The restaurant line is 15 to 20 percent, the general services line is 15 to 20 percent, and the taxi paragraph on the same page suggests 10 to 15 percent for acceptable service. Read that as a spread. Ten to fifteen for a competent ride, higher for a driver who helps with luggage, waits, or navigates a snow-bound street.

Why do Canadians tip so much? What Ontario law says

It helps to understand where the money goes. Under Ontario's Employment Standards Act, tips are not wages. They sit outside minimum wage, termination pay, vacation pay and overtime calculations. The general minimum wage in Ontario is $17.95 per hour from 1 October 2026, and a server earns that rate regardless of how many tips come in; there is no separate lower rate for liquor servers.

The same legislation says employers cannot withhold tips, take deductions from them or require employees to hand them back, except in tightly defined cases. The rule applies to voluntary payments from customers, voluntary payments to the employer for staff, and service charges that an employer imposes where a reasonable person would expect the money to go to employees, such as banquet gratuities.

There are three allowed deductions: statutory ones such as income tax, court orders and tip pooling. Tip pooling means an employer redistributes tips among employees under terms it sets. Employers may deduct a portion of the credit card processing fee on tips left by credit card, and since June 2024 tips must be paid to staff by cash, cheque or direct deposit. None of that changes what you leave, but it explains the norms: tips are a real part of how many service workers are paid, and they are legally protected as theirs.

This is Ontario law. Other provinces have their own rules, so treat the legal detail as Ontario-specific and the customs as national.

Tipping in Canada at restaurants, bars and cafés

For table service, leave 15 to 20 percent of the pre-tax bill for good service. A 15 percent tip is the polite minimum for an unremarkable meal; 18 to 20 is typical for service that was attentive. Destination Toronto notes that some restaurants add a gratuity automatically for large groups, so check the bill before adding anything.

If a restaurant adds a gratuity, you do not need to tip again unless the service was exceptional. Ontario law treats an employer-imposed service charge as a tip where a reasonable person would expect it to reach staff, so an automatic charge generally goes to the team. If you are unsure, ask the server whether the charge is a gratuity and how it is shared.

Tablet payment terminals deserve a word. Many Canadian cafés and takeaway counters now prompt for a tip on a screen before you pay, with preset percentages. Those prompts nudge you toward the preset amounts. For a counter-service coffee, there is no fixed expectation, and a small amount or nothing is acceptable. Tip more readily where someone has served you at a table, carried your food or made a drink to order.

Tipping taxis, rideshares and other drivers

Destination Toronto's taxi section suggests 10 to 15 percent for acceptable service, while its general services line says 15 to 20 percent. A practical middle path is 15 percent on a metered fare, rounded up, with a few dollars extra for luggage or a long wait.

Rideshare apps usually offer an in-app tip after the trip. The custom mirrors taxis, and many riders tip in the same range. Remember that fares in app-based services move with demand, so a tip percentage follows the fare you actually paid.

When you hire a driver for a longer job, such as a day of sightseeing, the logic scales with the effort. Our guide to Toronto attractions by private car explains how an hourly day works, and the same custom applies: a tip proportionate to the service, not a fixed sum.

How tipping in Canada works on a pre-booked chauffeur or airport transfer

Here is where visitors double-tip, or fail to tip when they meant to. A metered taxi has no gratuity in the fare, so you add one. A pre-booked car works differently, because the price is agreed in advance and may or may not itemise a gratuity or service charge.

There is no official figure for chauffeur tipping in Canada, so we will not invent one. The nearest official yardstick is the 15 to 20 percent range that Destination Toronto gives for services. The workable rule has two steps.

  1. Read your confirmation. If it lists a gratuity or service charge, you have already tipped, and a second amount is optional.
  2. If it does not, a tip in line with the 15 to 20 percent services range is a reasonable way to thank a driver who handled bags, tracked a delayed flight and waited at arrivals.

If you are unsure what your quote includes, ask the 24/7 desk before pickup so you tip once, not twice. When you book through our booker, the fare shown is the fixed fare quoted before you pay, so you know the amount and can decide on the tip separately.

Check your fixed fare

For a typical trip, such as Toronto Pearson to a downtown hotel, the distance is about 30 km (19 mi) and the drive takes roughly 30 minutes without traffic (OpenStreetMap road-routing data, free-flow). That is a short, simple job, and a tip in the middle of the range is plenty. For a long day, a wedding, or a late arrival with children and heavy bags, many guests tip toward the upper end of the range. Our Toronto limousine page and luxury chauffeur service page explain what each service involves.

What visitors from other countries often get wrong

Visitors from the US rarely have a problem. Visitors from the UK, Europe and Asia most often make three mistakes. They assume the service charge is included, they tip too little because the amount feels large, or they tip in cash on a card payment and wonder why the server looks surprised.

Remember that on a Canadian card terminal, the tip is added before you tap or insert. If you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, check which line the percentage is calculated from. Many screens calculate on the total including tax, which adds a little more than the tourism board's advice.

Cash is welcome and goes straight to the person you hand it to. Under Ontario's rules, tips left by card are paid to staff by cash, cheque or direct deposit, so either method reaches the worker.

Tipping at the airport and in arrivals

At Pearson, you will meet porters, taxi drivers and, for a pre-booked pickup, a chauffeur with a name board. For a driver who meets you inside arrivals, tracks your flight and carries your bags, a tip follows the same logic as above. Read the confirmation, tip once and keep the amount in proportion to the help you received.

For a full picture of what happens between the plane and the kerb, read our guide to arriving in Toronto as an international traveller. If you are weighing the train against a car, UP Express versus a private car compares the two for Pearson and Union, and airport transfer versus taxi versus rideshare sets out the differences.

A tipping cheat sheet for your first day

Carry small bills for porters and baristas. Check restaurant bills for automatic gratuity. Tip 15 to 20 percent on the pre-tax amount for table service. Round up a taxi fare to a sensible figure. Read the booking confirmation on any pre-booked car before adding anything.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip a limo driver in Canada?

There is no official figure. The nearest official yardstick is the 15 to 20 percent range Destination Toronto gives for services. First check whether your booking already lists a gratuity or service charge. If it does not, a tip in line with the 15 to 20 percent services range is a reasonable gesture.

Is tipping mandatory in Canada?

No law requires you to tip, but the custom is strong. Servers in Ontario earn the general minimum wage of $17.95 an hour from 1 October 2026, and tips come on top, so leaving a tip is how most visitors acknowledge good service.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Destination Toronto describes 15 to 20 percent on the pre-tax bill as standard. In Ontario, HST is 13 percent, so tipping on the total adds a little more. Either approach is accepted.

Do I tip when a restaurant adds a service charge?

Usually not. If the charge is described as a gratuity, it is meant for staff. Ontario law treats employer-imposed service charges as tips where a reasonable person would expect them to go to employees. Tip more only for exceptional service.

How much do I tip a taxi driver in Toronto?

The tourism board's taxi section suggests 10 to 15 percent for acceptable service, and its general line for services is 15 to 20 percent. Round up for luggage help or a long wait.

Do I tip at coffee counters and takeaway?

It is optional. Screen prompts suggest amounts, but there is no fixed expectation for counter service. Tip more when someone serves you at a table.

Do employers keep tips in Ontario?

Generally not. Employers cannot withhold tips or require employees to return them, except for tip pooling and statutory deductions. Tips paid by credit card can have a small processing fee deducted.

Does the fixed fare I see in the booker include a tip?

The fare shown is the fixed fare quoted before you pay, so you know the amount in advance. Whether you add a tip is your decision. If you want to confirm what a quote covers, ask the 24/7 desk before your pickup.
