Is the train, the car or a flight best for a one-day meeting in Ottawa?
For one traveller going downtown to downtown, VIA Rail (average 4 h 32 on its own site) is the calmest choice if a train fits your meeting. For two or more people, an early start on the 401 and 416 matches it on time and removes timetable risk. Flying rarely saves time once airports are counted.
The reason is that Toronto and Ottawa are in the awkward zone where the fastest vehicle is not the fastest journey. A flight spends about an hour in the air, but it adds a trip to the airport, a security line, a baggage wait and a ride into the city at both ends. A train takes nearly five hours but starts and ends in the middle of town. A car takes about the same as the train and offers the only schedule you control.
This guide is built for the person who needs to be somewhere in Ottawa on a Tuesday morning and back in Toronto that evening, or the assistant who has to book it. It works out the earliest arrivals, the last returns and the point at which the group size changes the answer.
How far is Ottawa from Toronto?
The distance is about 450 km (280 mi) by road, according to Ottawa Tourism, and 444 km by VIA Rail's own route page. The usual drive is east on Highway 401, then north on Highway 416 into Ottawa. Ottawa Tourism's own comparison lists these durations: about 1 hour by plane, 4.5 to 5 hours by train, 5 to 6 hours by intercity bus and 4.5 to 5 hours by car, with traffic as the main variable (Ottawa Tourism: Toronto to Ottawa).
Our own routing check agrees on the distance, about 450 km, and gives roughly 5 h 15 without traffic from downtown Toronto to Parliament Hill, so plan 5 to 5.5 hours by road with a stop. None of these figures include the first and last mile, which is where the real differences hide.
VIA Rail Toronto to Ottawa: what changes on 25 October
VIA lists 54 departures a week from Toronto to Ottawa on an average journey of 4 h 32 (VIA Rail: Toronto to Ottawa). That average hides a spread: on VIA's sample listing for 9 October, Ottawa-to-Toronto trips ran between 4 h 27 and 5 h 7 depending on the train.
More important for a same-day plan, VIA's twice-yearly corridor schedule change takes effect on 25 October 2026. The company says there will be an average of one fewer daily train between Ottawa and Toronto. Train 641 ends, and the early-morning option becomes Train 41, which leaves Ottawa at 4:56 am and reaches Toronto at 9:37 am. Several other trains change their operating days, and VIA will no longer stop at Guildwood or Malton (VIA Rail: schedule adjustments effective 25 October).
The practical warning is simple. If you booked a train for a late-October meeting before the announcement, re-check the train number. A same-day trip lives or dies on one departure, and fewer trains means less slack when one is changed.
The train, door to door
The VIA journey begins at Toronto Union Station, which is also a good starting point for anyone staying downtown; the Union Station rail transfer page explains how pick-ups there work. Add to the 4 h 32 average:
- Getting to Union: 15 to 40 minutes, depending on where you are. From Pearson, the UP Express takes 28 minutes, as set out in our UP Express versus private car guide.
- Boarding: at Ottawa, VIA restricts platform access five minutes before departure, so a tight connection is not forgiving.
- Ottawa station: 200 Tremblay Road, about 4 km from downtown, served by OC Transpo's light rail and buses (VIA Rail: Ottawa station). That makes the last mile to Parliament Hill, the Rideau Centre or a hotel a 15-minute taxi or a short rail connection.
The product itself is pleasant. Ottawa Tourism notes onboard Wi-Fi and roomy seats, and a seat with a table makes the train the best of the options for working. Fares are per person and VIA shows "from" prices that rise as seats sell.
Where the train struggles is flexibility. A meeting that runs long, a client who wants lunch, a signal delay on the line: the schedule does not bend, and the number of departures per day is finite.
Driving the 401 and the 416
The drive is simple and dull in the way that suits a work day. Leave Toronto on the 401 east, pass Kingston, continue to Johnstown and turn north on the 416 to Ottawa. Ottawa Tourism lists about 4.5 to 5 hours, and our routing check gives roughly 5 h 15 without traffic from downtown to Parliament Hill.
The risk is the first hour, not the rest. The 401 through the GTA has a heavy eastbound morning flow and a heavy westbound evening one, and a collision in Durham Region or near Kingston can cost an hour. A departure before 6 am usually clears the GTA before the peak builds. Leaving at 8 am can add an hour or more to the drive.
A private car adds something a self-drive does not: the passengers are working or resting for those hours instead of watching a brake light. It also solves parking in downtown Ottawa and removes the stress of a rental drop-off. For the dedicated page on this trip, see Toronto to Ottawa by private car.
Flying: one hour in the air, four hours door to door
Pearson has the most daily flights to Ottawa, and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport also serves the route. Ottawa Tourism lists about an hour in the air, which sounds like a four-hour saving. Count the whole chain for a downtown-to-downtown traveller:
- Downtown Toronto to Pearson: about 35 km (21 mi), roughly 30 minutes without traffic and up to an hour at peak. Billy Bishop is about 3 km (2 mi) from Union Station, roughly 10 minutes, so allow 15 to 25 minutes door to door.
- Airport arrival allowance: 60 to 90 minutes at Pearson for a domestic flight, a little less at Billy Bishop; see our guide to how early to get to the airport for the thinking.
- Flight: about an hour.
- Deplane and bags: 20 to 40 minutes.
- Ottawa airport to downtown: about 15 km (9 mi) to Parliament Hill, roughly 20 minutes without traffic, so allow 20 to 30 minutes.
Total on our planning allowances: roughly 3 h 15 to 4 h 15 with a carry-on only, and it grows with any delay. A flight beats the train and car only if the Toronto leg starts at an airport, if you fly out of Billy Bishop with a cabin bag, or if the day will otherwise start at 4 am. Taxis at Ottawa airport queue outside the centre door on Level 1, and pre-arranged cars use Pillars 12 and 13 at the kerb (Ottawa International Airport: ground transportation). Our Ottawa airport transfer page covers the pick-up detail, and the Billy Bishop airport page covers the Toronto end.
The intercity bus
Ottawa Tourism lists 5 to 6 hours by intercity bus, with stops and traffic affecting the time. It is the budget option and the slowest. For a one-day trip it is rarely sensible because the times and the return are tied to a timetable and to stops along the way.
Mode comparison: Toronto to Ottawa
All times are door to door and downtown to downtown, in planning terms. Fares are not quoted for our service; the booker shows the fixed fare for your pick-up and drop-off.

| VIA Rail | 5 – 5.5 h (average ride 4 h 32) | Per person, rises as seats sell | Carry-on and checked bags under VIA's rules | One traveller who wants to work on the way |
| Self-drive car | 5 – 5.5 h plus parking | Fuel, parking, wear | Any | Flexible travellers who enjoy driving |
| Flight from Pearson | 3.25 – 4.25 h | Per person; varies by date | Cabin bag only is best | Travellers already at or near the airport |
| Flight from Billy Bishop | 3 – 4 h | Per person; varies by date | Cabin bag only is best | Light-bag downtown Toronto departures |
| Intercity bus | 5.5 – 6.5 h | Lowest fares | Standard | Budget travellers with flexible time |
| Pre-booked private car | 5 – 5.5 h | Fixed fare via the booker | Any | Two or more travellers, working en route, set arrival time |
Earliest arrival and last return, mode by mode
This is where a one-day meeting is decided. Take a 10:00 meeting in downtown Ottawa and a Toronto home by evening.
- Train: you need a morning departure that gets you in with margin. If VIA's morning trains no longer line up with a 10:00 start after 25 October, the train is out of contention. Check the exact train; do not assume. On the return, VIA's sample for 9 October showed Ottawa departures from 12:23 to 18:03, with the 18:03 arriving in Toronto at 22:48. That sets a hard 5 pm finish if you want that train.
- Car: leave Toronto at 4:30 to 5:00 am for a 9:30 to 10:00 arrival, with a buffer inside. The return is limited only by how late you are prepared to be: leave Ottawa at 6 pm and you are in Toronto around 11 pm.
- Flight: the first flights leave early, but the margin shrinks quickly with any delay, and the last flights are a fixed time.
If the meeting is firm and the finish is not, the car is the only one of the three that tolerates a surprise at either end.
Two or more travellers: why a car changes the maths
Rail and air fares are charged per person, and a car is charged per vehicle. That shifts the balance as soon as there is a second traveller, because the colleague, assistant or client also takes the same seat on the same schedule. Three people on a train means three tickets, three sets of luggage in the racks and one shared fixed departure time. In a car, those three people can hold the meeting briefing on the way, stop for coffee at a place of their choosing, and leave when the meeting ends.
The same logic applies to luggage. If the day includes samples, a display, a printed bid or a speaker's equipment, the train and flight both make you carry it through stations. A car puts it in the boot at the door.
There is also a privacy angle that executives value. Calls, drafts and sensitive documents are easier in a private vehicle than in a quiet-car seat on VIA or at a gate.

Planning a same-day round trip properly
A return day of roughly 900 km is long, so decide early whether it should be a day trip or an overnight. A few guidelines:
- Fix the end time, not the start time. The start is a number; the end is a risk. Put the evening return in the plan in writing.
- Ask whether an overnight stay is cheaper than a late return. A hotel night near Parliament Hill may be less costly than the fatigue.
- Check Ontario 511 on the morning. The province's traffic service shows incidents on the 401 and 416, and a closure near Kingston changes everything.
- Allow a margin for the 416. The final stretch into Ottawa can slow near the city, particularly on weekday afternoons.
- Decide the return mode separately. A traveller can take the car down and the train back, or the reverse.
The desk can quote a one-way or return trip with the wait time built in and can advise on a day versus an overnight plan when you book. The wider region is covered on the Canada hub, the routes hub lists the intercity trips we run, and the Toronto departures are on the Toronto hub. Frequently asked questions
How far is Ottawa from Toronto?
About 450 km (280 mi) by road, and VIA Rail's route page gives 444 km by rail. The usual drive follows Highway 401 east, then Highway 416 north, in roughly 5 hours with normal traffic. A flight is about an hour in the air.
How long does the VIA Rail train from Toronto to Ottawa take?
VIA Rail lists an average of 4 h 32 for Toronto to Ottawa, with 54 departures a week. VIA's sample listing shows trains from about 4 h 27 to 5 h 7. VIA's schedule change on 25 October 2026 reduces the Ottawa–Toronto service by an average of one train a day.
Is it faster to fly or take the train from Toronto to Ottawa?
Door to door, usually not by much. The flight is about an hour, but airport access, the arrival allowance, baggage and the ride into town add three hours or more. Flying makes sense from Billy Bishop with a carry-on or when your day begins at an airport.
Where does the VIA Rail train arrive in Ottawa?
At Ottawa station, 200 Tremblay Road, roughly 4 km from downtown. VIA lists OC Transpo light rail and buses as connections, and taxis serve the station. It is not in the middle of downtown, so leave 15 to 20 minutes for the last leg.
What is the best way to do Toronto to Ottawa and back in one day?
If you can fit a morning train and a return before about 6 pm, the train is relaxed. If the meeting end time is uncertain, if you are two or more, or if you are carrying equipment, a car is more forgiving. A same-day return is about 900 km.
How long is the drive from Toronto to Ottawa?
Ottawa Tourism lists 4.5 to 5 hours on Highway 401 east and 416 north, and our routing check gives roughly 5 h 15 without traffic from downtown Toronto to Parliament Hill, so plan on 5 to 5.5 hours with a stop. Leaving the GTA before about 6 am avoids most of the peak. A collision, a snow squall or a Friday-afternoon exodus can add an hour or more.
How do I get from Ottawa airport to downtown?
Taxis queue on Level 1 outside the centre door, and pre-arranged cars use Pillars 12 and 13 at the kerb. Ottawa's airport is about 15 km (9 mi) from Parliament Hill, roughly 20 minutes without traffic, so allow 20 to 30 minutes by road.
