How far are the Punta Cana resorts from the airport?
Punta Cana airport transportation to your hotel is a short drive for most guests: from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), resorts are typically 15 to 45 minutes away. The closest areas take about 15 minutes; Uvero Alto and the far northern strip can take close to an hour.
Punta Cana is a region, not a town. The airport sits at the southern end of a coastline that runs north through Punta Cana's own resort area and Bávaro, then on to Macao and Uvero Alto. Distances follow the shoreline, and the time to your lobby depends on how far up the coast your resort sits and whether it is on the main road or on a private entrance road that adds minutes.
That makes the name of your resort the most important detail on your booking. Give the exact hotel name, not just "Bávaro", because two resorts in the same area can be fifteen minutes apart on resort roads.
Punta Cana resort areas by distance
The table groups the main areas from closest to farthest. Times are our estimates for a car on a normal day. Treat them as a planning guide, and check your own hotel's location.
| Area | Character | Typical drive from PUJ |
|---|---|---|
| Punta Cana resort zone | Large resorts next to the airport, golf and marina | 5–20 min |
| Cap Cana | Gated marina and golf community, upscale resorts | 15–30 min |
| Juanillo | Calm turquoise water near Cap Cana, "a few miles from the airport" per a traveller guide | 15–25 min |
| Bávaro | The main beachfront resort strip, shops and restaurants | 15–35 min |
| Macao | Quieter, more natural setting, surf beach | 30–45 min |
| Uvero Alto | Remote northern resorts | 40–60 min |
The Dominican tourism board describes Bávaro as the main resort area with beachfront hotels, Macao as a more natural setting with surfing, Juanillo as having calm turquoise water, and Cap Cana as home to a marina that has hosted small luxury cruise ships since 2017.
Punta Cana airport transportation to hotel: options compared
Published fares for taxis at PUJ are posted and linked from the airport's site; we do not repeat them, because they change. Our own fare is never printed in this article. The booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact hotel and vehicle before you pay.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Onroutz.ca private car | 15–45 min plus curb pickup | Fixed all-in fare via the booker | Sedan 2 large + 2 cabin; SUV 5–6 large; Sprinter 12 bags | Families, groups, golfers, late arrivals |
| Airport taxi | 15–50 min plus queue | Unmetered; rates posted, agree before you ride | Car boot | Couples with light bags |
| Tour-operator transfer bus | 45–120 min with several drop-offs | Included in some packages | Shared space | Guests whose package includes it |
| Rental car | Counter queue, then your own drive | Rental plus insurance | Large boot | Guests exploring beyond the resort |
| Public bus (APTRA) | Long, with a change | Low per ride | Carry-on only | Experienced local travellers |
| Motoconcho | Short hops | Negotiated | None | Not recommended |
The Government of Canada's advice for the Dominican Republic is direct about the street options. Taxis are not metered, so you negotiate the fare before departure. Arrange pickups through your hotel before you arrive, and use only official taxi stands at the airport. Use reputable companies or ride-share apps, and confirm the driver's identity and licence plate. Never share a taxi with strangers, avoid motorcycle taxis (motoconchos), and avoid open-door microbuses (gua-guas or públicos). The advisory level is "exercise a high degree of caution", mainly because of crime.
Punta Cana airport transportation to your hotel: when a private car wins
On a short coastal drive, a taxi can work for a couple. A private car is the better call in the following situations.
- A family or a group. One vehicle, one stop, no waiting for a second taxi. A Luxury SUV takes up to 6 passengers and 5–6 large bags. An Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags.
- Golf clubs, strollers and diving gear. Punta Cana is a golf and water-sports destination, and the bags show it. Tell us what you are bringing and we size the vehicle.
- Late flights. Your chauffeur tracks the flight. Included waiting runs 60 minutes from an international landing and 30 from a domestic one.
- Children. Infant, toddler and booster seats are supplied when you ask for them at booking.
- First visits. You avoid the negotiation and the question of whether a driver knows a smaller property.
- Remote resorts. For Uvero Alto and Macao, the longer drive makes comfort and a fixed fare matter more.
What the arrival looks like at PUJ
PUJ has two international terminals, A and B, according to the airport's own site, plus separate VIP, FBO and national terminals. Each international terminal has its own parking, and the airport's website notes that the Uber pick-up locations are shown on a map. Your airline decides the terminal. Give us the flight number and the driver does the rest.
Before you travel, complete the Dominican Republic's E-ticket. The Government of Canada states that all travellers must complete an electronic entry-exit form before boarding, that it must be filled in for each trip, and that it does not replace the tourist card. For air travel, the tourist card cost is included in the airline ticket. For Canadians, a tourist visa is not required for stays of up to 30 days, and your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay for tourism until 31 December 2026. Rules change, so verify them on the official pages.
Immigration lines at PUJ can be long when several wide-body flights land together. Free waiting time starts from the actual landing, and a name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is available on request, with an alias on the board for privacy.
Airport VIP services are separate from your ride
The airport offers its own VIP arrival and departure assistance, described on its website as a paid service that must be requested in advance. It helps with terminal formalities. It does not drive you to the resort. If you want both, book the VIP assistance with the airport and the car with us, and give each side the other's arrival details. See the airport's website for what it offers.
Resort check-in, luggage and timing
Many resorts set room-ready times in the afternoon. If you land in the morning, plan to wait at the lobby or enjoy the property while the room is made ready. Wristbands, welcome drinks and check-in paperwork take time, and a driver who stays with the luggage until the bell staff take over keeps that part orderly.
Resort roads are long. A property marked as "on the beach" can have a long internal entrance road, and the vehicle will not leave you at the gate. Give the resort name and the booking name so the driver can announce the arrival at the right entrance.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from early June to the end of November. If a storm affects your travel dates, the cancellation terms below apply, and the desk can help you move a booking.
Weddings, reunions and corporate groups
Punta Cana is a popular wedding and group destination. A group of 30 arriving across three flights needs a transfer plan for each flight, not one plan for all. Give the desk the flight numbers, party sizes and bag counts, and it builds one booking with several legs. Mini-coaches and coaches of 20–56 seats are available on request, and availability is confirmed at booking. Our wedding guest shuttles page explains the event side.
Choosing the vehicle for your party
The vehicle class should follow the bags as well as the people.
- Executive Sedan or First Class Sedan: up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 cabin bags, a good fit for couples and business travellers.
- Luxury SUV: up to 6 passengers and 5–6 large bags, such as a Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar, with the model confirmed at booking.
- Executive Sprinter: up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, suited to extended families and wedding parties.
- Mini-coach and coach: 20–56 seats on request for larger groups.
Water and phone charging are provided in most vehicles, which matters after a long flight with a low battery.
Excursions and evenings out from the resort
Many guests stay inside the resort for the first days and then book excursions, a round of golf or dinner at another property. An hourly car with a chauffeur keeps one vehicle at your disposal for the day, which is simpler than arranging a taxi each way from a remote resort. See the services hub for hourly bookings. Tell the desk the start time, the stops and the number of passengers, and the quote reflects the plan.
Moving between resorts, and returning to the airport
A hotel-to-hotel move is a common request for travellers who split a stay between a quiet resort and a livelier one. Give both hotel names and the pickup time. Resort pickups carry a 15-minute free wait.
For the return, ask for a pickup three hours before an international departure, plus time for your resort's checkout. Uvero Alto and Macao guests should add a margin for the longer drive. If you are leaving from Punta Cana after a stay on the north coast, a fixed pickup time is the simplest way to be sure the car is there.
How the service works in the Dominican Republic
The Onroutz.ca desk in Toronto books, confirms, supports and invoices the transfer. A vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner delivers it, in vehicles no more than four model years old. Everything sits on one booking, one confirmation and one invoice, with one desk to call at any hour. We do not own cars or offices in the Dominican Republic.
For the airport overview, see Punta Cana airport transfers. For the broader picture, see the resort transfers hub, the Caribbean and Mexico hub and the hotel transfers hub. If you are comparing island destinations, read Aruba transfers and Cancún Airport transfers. The fleet lists the vehicle classes, and our guide to how private airport transfers work explains the booking process. Three official pages help with planning: the Dominican tourism board's Punta Cana page for destination context, the airport's transportation page for its own services, and the Government of Canada's Dominican Republic advice for current entry rules.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Punta Cana airport to my hotel?
Usually 15 to 45 minutes. Resorts next to the airport and in Cap Cana are the shortest, Bávaro is in the middle, and Macao and Uvero Alto take longer. Resort entrance roads can add a few minutes.
What is the best way to get from Punta Cana airport to a hotel?
For families, groups and late arrivals, a pre-booked private car. For couples with light bags, a regulated taxi may do. The Government of Canada advises arranging pickups through your hotel, using official stands and agreeing the fare before you ride.
Are taxis metered at Punta Cana?
No. The Government of Canada states that taxis in the Dominican Republic are not metered, so you negotiate the fare before departure. The airport links to posted taxi rates on its website.
Is there a free shuttle from the airport to hotels?
Traveller guides report that Dominican airports do not run hotel courtesy shuttles, and the airport's site lists a shuttle only for one hotel at Puntacana Village. Some holiday packages include a shared transfer, so check yours.
Do I need an E-ticket for the Dominican Republic?
Yes. The Government of Canada states that you must complete an electronic entry-exit form, the E-ticket, before boarding, for each trip. Your airline checks it. Verify the current rule on the official page.
Can I book a car for a wedding group?
Yes. An Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers, and mini-coaches and coaches of 20–56 seats are available on request. The desk builds one booking with several legs for guests on different flights.
What if my flight is late?
Your driver tracks the flight and adjusts to the actual landing. International arrivals get a free hour of waiting; domestic arrivals get 30 minutes.
What is the cancellation policy?
More than 72 hours' notice has no charge. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10 percent, at 48 hours or less it is 50 percent, and at 24 hours or less or on a no-show it is 100 percent, counted from the scheduled pickup. If your trip falls during a major event, check the confirmation: the deadline may differ.
