San Diego International Airport (SAN) sits on the north shore of the bay, about 5 km from the Gaslamp Quarter, and that short distance is what makes planning easy to get wrong. Downtown hotels are a 10 to 20 minute run. A hotel on Coronado island is across a bridge, a hotel in La Jolla is up the coast, and a resort in Del Mar or Carmel Valley is a 40-minute trip that behaves like a different journey. This page sets out San Diego airport to hotel transportation, district by district, and says plainly when the bus or a hotel shuttle is the better choice. For the rest, Onroutz.ca books a licensed local transfer partner to meet you and drive you to the hotel entrance on a fixed fare.
If your question is about the airport itself, including the terminal rebuild, our SAN airport page covers it. This page starts from the hotel.
What is the best way to get from San Diego airport to your hotel?
For downtown, a taxi, ride app or MTS Route 992 bus covers the 5 km quickly. For Coronado, La Jolla, Del Mar or a resort, or with luggage and children, a pre-booked private car is simpler: it meets you at the airport and goes to the hotel entrance, 15 to 55 minutes depending on the district.
San Diego rewards honesty about distance. A solo traveller with one bag and a hotel beside the waterfront should use the bus or a short taxi hop. A family of five heading to a beach resort, or a group arriving late from the east, should not.
How far is each San Diego hotel area from the airport?
Distances are approximate road distances, with typical drive times in ordinary traffic. I-5 and I-805 clog on weekday afternoons, the Coronado Bridge slows in the late afternoon, and convention weeks fill the roads around the waterfront.
| Hotel area | Distance from SAN (about) | Typical drive time | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown waterfront, Embarcadero | 5 km / 3 mi | 10–20 min | Hotels beside the harbour; short, simple runs |
| Gaslamp Quarter, East Village, Convention Center | 6 km / 4 mi | 10–20 min | 25–35 min on event and convention days |
| Coronado (Hotel del Coronado area) | 13 km / 8 mi | 15–25 min | Single bridge in; 30–40 min at weekday peaks |
| Mission Bay and Pacific Beach | 12–16 km / 7–10 mi | 15–30 min | Beach traffic in summer |
| La Jolla | 22 km / 14 mi | 20–35 min | 40–60 min on I-5 in the afternoon |
| Del Mar and Carmel Valley | 38–40 km / 24–25 mi | 30–55 min | 55–75 min on weekday evenings |
Put the hotel and its street into the booker, and the fare is fixed for that address.

The bus, in numbers
MTS Route 992 serves the airport and downtown. MTS has said that from 6 September 2026 it runs every 15 minutes until the end of service, with extra evening and late-night trips; the ride is about 15 minutes to America Plaza. The details are in MTS's announcement. The downtown stop is near Santa Fe Depot, so the bus is excellent if your hotel is close to there and a poor fit if it is not.
Pickup points at SAN
San Diego's airport publishes pickup instructions by terminal on its website, san.org, which blocks automated checks, so read it in your browser. In short, at Terminal 1 you cross to a ground transportation island; at Terminal 2 you cross to a transportation plaza; and hotel courtesy shuttles pick up at the islands outside both terminals. Terminal 1 is being replaced in phases, with the first phase open since September 2025, so layouts change and the confirmation tells you where your driver will be rather than relying on a rule that may have moved.
Do San Diego hotels run free airport shuttles?
Some do, mainly hotels close to the airport and a few downtown properties, and the airport lists a pickup area for them. A resort in Del Mar or Carmel Valley generally does not run a free airport shuttle, and at a waterfront hotel it depends on the hotel. Ask your hotel two things: whether it has a shuttle, and where it stops. If the answer is no or "it depends", book the transfer.
When the bus or a shuttle is the better choice
If you are alone, your hotel is near Santa Fe Depot or America Plaza, and you do not mind a short walk, take Route 992. It is quick, frequent and a good fit. If your hotel runs its own shuttle from a stop outside the terminal, that is free and fine.
A private car makes sense when:
- Three or more travellers. One vehicle covers everyone.
- Luggage. A Luxury SUV takes six passengers with five to six large bags; an Executive Sprinter takes twelve people and twelve bags.
- A hotel outside the core. Coronado, La Jolla, Del Mar and Carmel Valley are all off the bus route.
- Late landings. Your flight is tracked and the driver waits.
- Children. Child, toddler and booster seats are added at booking.
- A resort schedule. A 3 p.m. check-in and a dinner reservation leave little slack.
- Privacy. A discreet car, with a driver who stays quiet unless you want to talk.
Vehicle classes are laid out on the fleet page, and the guide to how private airport transfers work answers the first-time questions.

| Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego | Downtown waterfront, Seaport Village | SAN | 1 Market Place, one of the shortest runs from SAN; convention weeks bring extra traffic |
Hotels are listed to help you plan; listing does not mean the hotel is affiliated with or endorses Onroutz.ca.
The downtown waterfront and the Gaslamp also include well-known stays such as the Hilton San Diego Bayfront near the Convention Center, the Hard Rock Hotel and the Pendry in the Gaslamp, the Omni San Diego in the East Village, and the InterContinental on the Embarcadero. Give the booker the hotel and street, and we will match the note to the actual approach.
Coronado: one bridge, one approach
Coronado is an island city reached by the Coronado Bridge, a high arch over the bay, and the Silver Strand road from the south is a long detour. The airport-to-bridge run is simple and the bridge lanes slow in the late afternoon, so a driver who knows which lane is moving saves minutes. The Hotel del Coronado is the best-known address on the island, and once you are across, the streets are an easy grid. For most guests the question is the time of day, not the distance.
Del Mar, Carmel Valley and La Jolla
North of the city, the coast road through La Jolla, Del Mar and Solana Beach follows I-5. Del Mar is a village with a small centre, narrow approach streets and beach traffic in summer; the City of Del Mar site lists local events that can close roads. The Fairmont Grand Del Mar is inland in Carmel Valley, so the trip leaves the coast. La Jolla is hilly, with tight village streets and scarce kerb space. These trips are quiet in the middle of a Tuesday and a stop-start grind on a Friday evening, so allow the upper end of the range.
Arriving at SAN: where your driver meets you
SAN has two terminals. Check whether your Toronto flight is pre-cleared: Pearson is among the ten Canadian airports with U.S. preclearance, and pre-cleared passengers land as domestic arrivals. CBP lists the airports. If you connect through a U.S. hub, you clear customs there and your San Diego leg is domestic. Tell us the final flight number: that is the one we track. Remember the clocks: San Diego runs on Pacific Time, three hours behind Toronto.
Every airport pickup is flight-tracked. The free waiting clock starts at actual landing: 60 minutes after an international arrival, 30 after a domestic one. Meet and greet with a name board is an option at booking, and an alias can replace your name; the airport meet and greet service page explains it. Vehicles: an Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) takes up to three passengers with two large and two cabin bags; a Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) takes up to six with five to six large bags; models are confirmed at booking.
Cruise days and conventions
San Diego's cruise terminals are on the Embarcadero, about 5 km from the airport. The Port of San Diego publishes cruise information; embarkation windows are set by the cruise line, so tell us the ship name and the window and we will time the pickup. The cruise transfers hub explains how port transfers are planned.
San Diego is also a convention city. San Diego Comic-Con is usually held in July, and the days around it bring heavy arrivals, departures and street closures around the waterfront hotels. For events and corporate arrivals, see our executive car service page and the corporate meetings guide; the travel desk can sequence multi-leg itineraries on one booking.
How the San Diego transfer works with Onroutz.ca
Onroutz.ca is a transfer desk based in Toronto. Outside Toronto and the GTA, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner, and Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices it from Toronto: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. US partners are US-licensed, with vehicles no more than four model years old (Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach up to seven).
- The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
- Your confirmation lists the vehicle class, the meeting point and the contact for the day.
- The flight is followed from departure, which lets the pickup move if you land early or late.
- The chauffeur loads your bags and delivers you to the hotel entrance, or the nearest legal stop where access is restricted.
For groups, an Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags; see Sprinter van with driver. Larger parties can ask for a mini-coach or coach, 20 to 56 seats.
Late arrivals and early departures
If your flight lands late or is delayed, tracking means the driver adjusts to the real landing. For departures, a morning flight from La Jolla or Del Mar needs more cushion than the map suggests, since the I-5 and I-805 corridors build early on weekdays. Build in a buffer and the desk will advise a pickup time.
Pair this with the rest of your trip
San Diego is a short hop from Los Angeles and the Bay Area. For Los Angeles, see our Los Angeles hotel transfers page; for the Bay Area, see San Francisco hotel transfers. The hotel transfers hub lists every city, and the U.S. region page lists the American cities we cover. Frequently asked questions
How do I get from San Diego airport to my hotel?
By taxi, ride app, MTS Route 992 bus, hotel shuttle or pre-booked car. Downtown is about 5 km, usually 10 to 20 minutes by car. Coronado is about 13 km, Del Mar about 38 km. A private car follows your flight and ends at the hotel entrance.
How far is the San Diego airport from the Hotel del Coronado?
About 13 km (8 mi) by road, usually 15 to 25 minutes, over the Coronado Bridge. At weekday peaks the bridge can push the trip to 30 to 40 minutes. A driver can pick the better lane, and the booker shows a fixed fare for the exact address.
Are there free hotel shuttles at San Diego airport?
Some hotels near the airport and a few downtown run courtesy shuttles, which pick up at the transportation islands outside the terminals. Resorts in Del Mar, Carmel Valley and La Jolla generally do not. Confirm with your hotel where the shuttle stops and how often it runs.
Is there a bus from San Diego airport to downtown?
Yes. MTS Route 992 runs between the airport and downtown, about 15 minutes. MTS has said that from 6 September 2026 it runs every 15 minutes until the end of service. It is a good option for one traveller with one bag and a hotel near Santa Fe Depot.
How long does it take to get from San Diego airport to Del Mar?
About 38 km (24 mi), usually 30 to 45 minutes, longer in the weekday evening peak or on summer weekends. For Carmel Valley and the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, allow 35 to 55 minutes. A pre-booked car with flight tracking is the realistic choice here.
Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?
Yes. Every airport pickup is flight-tracked, and the free waiting clock starts at actual landing: 60 minutes after an international arrival and 30 after a domestic one. If the airline moves you to another flight, let the 24/7 desk know and the car moves too.
How much is a car from San Diego airport to my hotel?
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. There is no meter and no surge. Taxi and ride-app prices vary with traffic and demand.
What is your cancellation policy?
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. For big San Diego events the cancellation deadline can differ, and the confirmation will say so.
