What is the best airport transfer from Marco Polo to Venice?
Marco Polo airport is on the mainland, about 13 km from the historic island, and cars stop at Piazzale Roma. Choose by hotel: the ATVO bus or a car to Piazzale Roma if you can walk or take a vaporetto, an Alilaguna boat for the lagoon, or a private car for Mestre, Padua, Treviso and the mountains.
Venice does not work like other cities, and this page is written to deal with that honestly. A private car can meet you at Marco Polo Airport (VCE) and take you to the edge of the historic centre, but the car cannot go any further. The last point reachable by road is Piazzale Roma, with the car-island of Tronchetto beside it. From there you walk, take a water bus, or take a water taxi to your door.
The mainland side is different, and that is where a private transfer is strongest: Mestre, where many hotels sit, plus Padua, Treviso, Verona and the Dolomites. This page belongs to our Europe network and the main airport transfers hub.
Marco Polo airport at a glance
Marco Polo is on the mainland shore of the lagoon, north-east of Venice and Mestre. The road from the airport runs south towards the Mestre ring road and then across the Liberta causeway to Piazzale Roma.
- Distance to Piazzale Roma: about 13 to 20 km, depending on the route and source.
- Drive time: about 20 to 30 minutes by road, longer at rush hour or when the causeway is congested.
- Distance to Mestre: about 10 km, 15 to 20 minutes.
- Water routes: Alilaguna boats from the airport pier to Murano, the Lido, San Marco and the Grand Canal, taking an hour or more depending on the line.
- Bus: the ATVO airport express to Piazzale Roma takes about 20 minutes with only two stops.
Check the route and journey time against the operators; lagoon timetables change with the season and tide.
How a private pickup works at Marco Polo
We follow your aircraft from departure, so an early or late landing shifts the pickup with it. The free waiting allowance is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one.
The chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board on request, or an alias on the board for privacy. Luggage goes into the car at the terminal door. Most vehicles have water and phone charging, and child, toddler and booster seats can be requested in the booking.
Where the destination is Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto car park, the chauffeur drops you at the last car point. If your hotel is on the water, tell us the hotel name and landing pier at booking, because your hotel will often arrange its own boat or a porter. We then time the road leg to that connection.

When the bus or the boat is the better choice
If you are travelling light, staying near Piazzale Roma or the train station, and you do not mind carrying a bag over a couple of bridges, the ATVO bus is quick, cheap and predictable. It makes just two stops, takes about 20 minutes, and ends at the place most visitors need first. The ticket machines are in the baggage hall.
The Alilaguna boats are a better way to arrive if you want the lagoon view and are not in a hurry. The Blue Line serves Murano, Fondamente Nove, the Lido, San Zaccaria and San Marco, and goes on to Zattere, Tronchetto and the railway station. The Orange Line runs through the Cannaregio and Grand Canal stops to Rialto and Ca' Rezzonico. A seasonal Red Line serves the Lido and San Marco. The boat takes an hour or more, so it suits a leisurely first afternoon, not a tight connection.
A water taxi is the most direct route for a hotel on a canal, but its fare is set per boat and is not printed online, so ask for the price before you board.
When a private car is the right call
Venice is a case where a car helps on one side of the lagoon, not the other. A private transfer is the right choice for:
- Mestre and mainland hotels. Many conference hotels and cheaper rooms are on the mainland, and a direct car avoids the bus and train.
- Padua, Treviso, Verona and the Veneto. Distances are short and public transport changes are awkward with luggage.
- The Dolomites and Cortina. A long drive of two hours or more that is only comfortable in a car or a Sprinter.
- Groups with luggage. A family of five with six cases does not enjoy the bridges.
- Late arrivals. Boat services thin out at night, and a car does not.
- Cruise passengers. Large ships have used mainland terminals since the 2021 ban on ships over 25,000 gross tonnes in the Giudecca Canal, so a car to Marghera or Fusina is common. Confirm your terminal with your cruise line.
Mainland and onward distances from Marco Polo
All distances are approximate road figures and depend on your exact address.
| Destination | About (km) | Usual drive time | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mestre | 10 | 15 to 20 min | Mainland hotels, train hub |
| Piazzale Roma | 13 to 20 | 20 to 30 min | Last car point for Venice |
| Treviso | 25 to 30 | 30 to 40 min | Second airport, Prosecco hills beyond |
| Padua | 45 to 50 | 40 to 55 min | Scrovegni chapel, university city |
| Verona | 120 | 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 | Opera and Lake Garda gateway |
| Cortina d'Ampezzo | 150 to 160 | 2 h to 2 h 30 | Dolomites; mountain road in winter |
If your hotel is in Mestre, the car reaches the door, and Mestre station is one stop from Santa Lucia, the station beside the old city, on frequent regional trains. That plan suits guests who want a larger room for the money and a short hop into Venice for the day. Treviso has its own airport, separate from Marco Polo, so check which one your ticket says before you book; the booking form asks for the airport by name. For the Dolomites in winter, ask about the vehicle and winter tyres at booking. A Luxury SUV is a more reassuring choice than a sedan on snowy mountain roads.
Choosing a vehicle
On the mainland side of Venice the choice is about bags and bridges. An Executive Sedan (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac or similar) seats up to 3 with 2 large and 2 cabin bags, and a First Class Sedan (S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) seats three too, with more space. A Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali, Chevrolet Suburban or similar) suits up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags, and an Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) up to 12 passengers with 12 bags. Mini-coaches, coaches of 20 to 56 seats, Maybach, Rolls-Royce and stretch limousines are on request, and the exact model is confirmed at booking.
See the fleet page for every class.
Planning around Venice's quirks
A few Venice-specific points shape the day, and they apply whether you arrive by private transfer or by boat.
- Luggage and bridges. Venice has hundreds of bridges, and most have steps. A large case is easy on a boat and hard on foot. If your hotel is a long walk from the nearest pier or car point, ask for a porter service when you book your room.
- Day-visitor fee. The city has run a day-visitor entry fee on selected days. Guests staying overnight are generally treated differently, but check the City of Venice's official site for the current rules before you visit.
- Acqua alta. High tides can flood parts of the city, mostly in autumn and winter, and boats may be delayed. Allow extra time in those seasons.
- Peak periods. Carnival in February, the film festival in late summer and Easter are the busiest times.
None of this changes the airport leg, but it changes how you want to arrive.
How the Venice transfer is delivered
The mainland driving is done by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured Italian partner. Onroutz.ca handles the rest from Toronto: booking, confirmation, support and invoicing, with one 24/7 contact for the whole trip. Partner cars are no more than 4 model years old (up to 7 for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach). We do not own cars, boats or offices in Italy.
Entry rules for Italy
Italian entry follows Schengen rules: no visa for most short US and Canadian visits. Newer EU systems, the Entry/Exit System at the border and the ETIAS authorisation, add steps to plan for. Dates have moved more than once, so check the current position at travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly.
More Italian transfers
Many Venice trips combine with other cities. See Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino, and browse hotel transfers and rail transfers for hotel and station legs. If you would like a driver holding a board in arrivals, read about meet and greet. Boat lines are described on Alilaguna's site, and the bus operator is ATVO.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Venice Marco Polo airport from Venice?
About 13 km from the historic island, on the mainland shore of the lagoon. By road the last point you can reach is Piazzale Roma, about 20 to 30 minutes from the airport. Beyond that, Venice is reached on foot or by boat.
Can a car take me to my hotel in Venice?
Only as far as Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto car island. After that you walk, take a water bus, or arrange a water taxi. Hotels in Mestre and elsewhere on the mainland can be reached directly by road. Tell us your hotel's name and nearest landing point so the road leg ends where your onward boat or porter begins.
How long does the Alilaguna boat take?
The airport lines run to Murano, the Lido, San Marco, Rialto and other stops, and the journey usually takes an hour or more depending on the line. Check the operator's timetable, as services change with the season. The boat suits a relaxed first afternoon, not a tight connection.
What is the cheapest way to get into Venice from the airport?
The ATVO airport express bus to Piazzale Roma is typically the cheapest direct option and takes about 20 minutes. A vaporetto or a short walk takes you the rest of the way, depending on your hotel. Check the operator's current fare, as it can change.
Can you take me from Marco Polo to the Dolomites or Cortina?
Yes. Cortina d'Ampezzo is about 150 to 160 km from the airport, usually 2 to 2 hours 30 minutes. In winter, ask for a Luxury SUV and confirm road conditions at booking. The final mountain stretch can be slow after snow, so leave margin for the return.
How long does the chauffeur wait at Marco Polo?
We follow the flight and wait from touchdown: 60 minutes free after an international landing, 30 after a domestic one. Both cover the passport queue, but a long hold at baggage claim is worth telling the desk about. Waiting is counted from the actual landing time.
Can you meet me with a name board and fit a child seat?
Yes, both on request. A child, toddler or booster seat is reserved at booking, and the chauffeur can hold a board in arrivals showing either your name or an alias. Give us each child's age and weight when you book.
