Car service from Seattle airport: the Sea-Tac rulebook
Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA, always called Sea-Tac) is about 14 miles (23 km) south of downtown, a drive of roughly 22 km along I-5. Most airports leave the rules for chauffeured cars vague. The Port of Seattle publishes them, and they shape how a pre-booked car service from Seattle airport works: where the driver meets you, where the car waits and why a flight-tracked pickup is worth more here than elsewhere.
Onroutz.ca books, confirms and invoices the transfer from Toronto; a vetted, licensed and commercially insured Washington State partner drives it. This page sets out the Port's pre-arranged limo rules in plain language, the Link light rail option, drive times across Puget Sound, and honest guidance on when the train is the better way to go.
How do I get from Sea-Tac airport to downtown Seattle?
By Link light rail, which takes about 38 minutes from the airport station to downtown, or by taxi, ride app or pre-booked car. By road it is about 22 km (14 mi), 25 to 40 minutes, and 50 to 75 minutes during the I-5 peaks. A private car goes door to door.
Concourses and the garage
Sea-Tac has Concourses A, B, C and D and two satellite terminals reached by train. Almost everything that happens at ground level happens in or beside the parking garage: the Ground Transportation Booth is on the garage's third level, and the Link station is reached by a skybridge from the fourth floor. If you remember one thing, it is that Sea-Tac's pickups are garage-based.
Arriving from Toronto
Toronto Pearson has U.S. preclearance, so flights from Pearson are cleared before departure and land in the United States as domestic arrivals. CBP's preclearance page lists the airports. That means a Toronto flight to Seattle reaches baggage claim without a customs queue, and the 30-minute domestic waiting window applies. Pacific Time is three hours behind Toronto.
How the Port of Seattle handles pre-arranged limousines
The Port of Seattle states its rules on its pre-arranged limousine requirements page. In summary:
- Permitted pre-arranged limousines pick up passengers on the Arrival Drive (Lower Drive)
- Drop-offs go on the Departure Drive (Upper Drive), only in load and unload lanes or bus zones
- For meet and greet, drivers park in designated limo stalls on the garage's third floor
- Vehicles must be chauffeur-driven, unmetered and unmarked luxury vehicles, and all passengers must be pre-arranged fares
- Drivers check in at the Ground Transportation Booth right after arriving, before loading passengers on the third floor
- Drivers may not loiter, solicit, wait or park on the airport drives, and there are no staging facilities for pre-arranged limousines on airport premises
Put simply, a chauffeur cannot circle the airport waiting for you. The driver arrives against your tracked landing and collects you at the pre-arranged point, which is why your flight number and actual landing time drive the pickup.
What this means for your pickup
Your confirmation will name the pickup point: either the lower Arrival Drive or the garage meet-and-greet stalls, depending on whether you want a name-board greeting. With meet and greet, the driver waits inside with a board bearing your name or an alias, then walks you to the stall on the third floor. Without it, the driver messages you when you have your bags and meets you at the kerb.

Link light rail: the honest best option
Link is genuinely good. Sound Transit puts the ride at about 38 minutes from the airport to downtown, with trains roughly every 8 to 10 minutes for most of the day. You walk from baggage claim to the fourth floor of the garage, cross the skybridge, and tap on with a card or the Transit GO app. A free Train-to-Plane shuttle also runs between the terminal and the station from 5 a.m. to midnight, according to the Port. Trains do not run all night, so a very late arrival may mean you need a road option.
When the train is the better choice
If you are alone, you have a carry-on or one bag, and your hotel is near a Link station (Westlake, University Street, Capitol Hill, the University of Washington), the train is quick and reliable, and I-5 cannot slow it down. We recommend it.
A private car is the better choice when:
- Three or more people are travelling, or the luggage does not suit stairs, escalators and a skybridge
- You are arriving after the trains have thinned out, or the flight is delayed into the night
- Your hotel is on the waterfront, in South Lake Union, Bellevue or anywhere off the rail line
- You need to reach a cruise terminal with your bags on embarkation day
- You want a booked vehicle with a name-board greeting, particularly after a long-haul flight
Drive times from Sea-Tac
I-5 is the spine of the region and is busy from about 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. Downtown ramps and the stadium district add their own slowdowns on game and event days.
| Destination | Road distance | Typical drive time | Peak caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Seattle | about 22 km / 14 mi | 25–40 min | 50–75 min on weekday afternoons |
| Pier 66 and Pier 91 cruise terminals | about 24–26 km / 15–16 mi | 30–45 min | Allow 60 min on embarkation mornings |

Seattle's cruise connection
Seattle is a major Alaska cruise port, with ships using the Bell Street terminal at Pier 66 and the Smith Cove terminal at Pier 91. The cruise season typically runs from spring into early autumn, so check dates for your sailing. For airport-to-ship runs, see Seattle airport to the cruise port and the cruise transfers hub. Luggage, timing against the check-in window and a late flight are the things to plan for.
Bellevue, Redmond and the Eastside
The technology belt on the east side of Lake Washington, including Bellevue, Redmond and Kirkland, is a regular destination for corporate travel. Crossing Lake Washington adds a layer of traffic risk, so a car timed to your meetings matters. For a day of calls, an hourly car stays with you. Our executive car service page covers corporate accounts with monthly invoicing.

Flight tracking, waiting time and meet and greet
Tracking is standard on every airport pickup. After an international landing, 60 minutes of waiting are free; after a domestic landing, 30. The Port's no-staging rule makes the arrangement tighter: the driver comes to the airport for your landing, not before it. Name-board meet and greet is available on request, and the meet and greet page explains how it works.
Cancellation terms
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Some large events have a separate deadline, and you will see it on the confirmation.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Sea-Tac to downtown Seattle?
By Link light rail, about 38 minutes. By car it is about 22 km (14 mi), usually 25 to 40 minutes, and 50 to 75 minutes on weekday afternoons when I-5 is busy. The train avoids traffic, the car avoids the walk and the stairs.
Where do pre-arranged limousines pick up at Sea-Tac?
According to the Port of Seattle, permitted pre-arranged limousines pick up on the Arrival Drive (Lower Drive). For meet and greet, drivers park in designated limo stalls on the third floor of the garage. Drivers must check in at the Ground Transportation Booth and cannot wait on airport drives.
Where is the Link light rail station at Sea-Tac?
The station is reached from baggage claim by going up to the fourth floor, crossing the skybridge to the garage level and following the signs. A free Train-to-Plane shuttle also runs between the terminal and the station from 5 a.m. to midnight. You can pay by tapping a credit, debit or ORCA card.
Is there a shuttle from Sea-Tac to the cruise terminals?
Door-to-door shuttle vans and cruise-line transfers run, and a private car goes direct. The terminals at Pier 66 and Pier 91 are about 24 to 26 km (15 to 16 mi) away, 30 to 45 minutes. Tell us the ship and embarkation time so we can plan the pickup.
How much is a taxi from Sea-Tac to downtown?
Taxis are metered, so the fare depends on the route and traffic and we do not quote a figure. Ride-app fares vary with demand. An Onroutz.ca private transfer has a fixed all-in fare shown in the booker before you pay, so I-5 delays do not change it.
Do I clear U.S. customs in Seattle if I fly from Toronto?
Not if your flight was pre-cleared. Toronto Pearson is one of ten Canadian airports with U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance, so you complete the inspection before boarding and arrive as a domestic passenger. If you connected through a non-pre-cleared route, you clear customs on landing.
Can you drive me from Sea-Tac to Bellevue?
Yes. Bellevue is about 32 km (20 mi) from the airport, usually 30 to 50 minutes and up to 90 minutes on I-405 at peak. Tell us the hotel or office address, and the booker shows a fixed fare for the trip.
Can you fit a family of six with cruise luggage?
Yes, in a Luxury SUV with up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags. For a larger party we can use an Executive Sprinter with up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. Give us the number of travellers and bags when you book.
