Is Al Maktoum Airport (DWC) the same airport as Dubai International (DXB)?
No. Al Maktoum International (code DWC, also called Dubai World Central) is a separate airport in the Dubai South area, about 60 km from Dubai International (DXB) by Dubai Airports' own figure. DXB is still the main hub for most passengers. Check the three-letter code on your ticket before you plan the ride.
The confusion is understandable. Both airports are run by Dubai Airports, both appear in news about "the new Dubai airport", and a flight search that says "Dubai" can return either code. The difference matters because the airports are on opposite sides of the city's growth corridor. DXB sits inside the built-up city. DWC sits out in Dubai South near Jebel Ali, which is why the road to Downtown Dubai is roughly half an hour longer from DWC than from DXB (see the table below).
If you are reading this because a booking confirmation says DWC and you expected DXB, you are not alone, and nothing is wrong. Low-cost, charter and cargo carriers use Al Maktoum. What is new is the scale of the plan around it, which we cover below.
For the DXB side of the story, our guide to Dubai Airport terminals 1, 2 and 3 explains which building each airline uses and where arrivals meet.
What DWC is today, and what the published plan says
Today Al Maktoum is a small passenger operation next to a large cargo and business-aviation field. Dubai Airports' own site describes it only through its flight board and transport links, and the airline directory lists a mixed set of carriers there. It is not yet a place where you will find the crowds, shops and train link of DXB.
The expansion plan is public. According to a Khaleej Times report published on 5 October 2026, the sequence reads like this:
- 2027: the second of five planned runways is due to open, giving the airport two runways.
- Around 2027: flydubai is expected to begin moving part of its operations from DXB to DWC in phases, with other airlines to follow later.
- 2032: phase one of the new passenger complex opens, with capacity of about 150 million passengers a year.
- Full build-out (no date given): capacity of 260 million passengers a year, five runways, two passenger terminals, seven concourses and more than 430 aircraft stands. The project cost is quoted at US$35 billion.
Read that list as intent, not a schedule you can book against. Phase dates in aviation megaprojects slide, and the report itself notes inconsistent capacity figures in different sources. For a trip in the next twelve months, assume today's split: DXB for nearly everything, DWC for a defined set of carriers.
Which airlines fly from DWC and which from DXB?
Dubai Airports publishes an airline directory sorted by terminal. As of October 2026 it shows:
- DXB Terminal 3: Air Canada, Emirates, flydubai, Qantas and United Airlines.
- DXB Terminal 1: a long list of international carriers, including British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa, KLM, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines.
- DXB Terminal 2: flydubai, Wizz Air, Air India Express, SalamAir and a set of regional carriers.
- DWC: carriers such as Wizz Air, Jazeera Airways, Gulf Air, flynas, Eurowings, Norwegian, Transavia France and VietJet Air, alongside cargo airlines. The directory shows several of these (Jazeera, Gulf Air, flynas, Eurowings, Transavia France) under both DXB Terminal 1 and DWC.
Two cautions. First, the directory is a list of airlines that appear in the system, not a guarantee that a given route is flying this week. Second, some names appear at more than one airport. Wizz Air is listed at both DXB Terminal 2 and DWC, and flydubai at both Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 of DXB. Your booking shows the operating airport for that specific flight, so trust the ticket over the list.
For Canadian readers, the practical point is that Air Canada is listed at DXB Terminal 3, not at Al Maktoum.
How far is each airport from Downtown, the Marina, the Palm and Abu Dhabi?
These are road distances and free-flow drive times calculated on the OpenStreetMap road network (OSRM) from each airport to a central point (Burj Khalifa, Dubai Marina Walk, Atlantis The Palm, Zayed International Airport and Hamdan Street in Abu Dhabi), rounded. They shift by a few kilometres depending on the exact hotel gate. Use them to decide, then confirm the final minutes on a live map for your address.
| Destination | From DXB | From DWC |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Dubai (Burj Khalifa area) | about 18 km; roughly 20 min without traffic | about 50 km; roughly 50 min without traffic |
| Dubai Marina / JBR | about 35 km; roughly 35 min | about 30 km; roughly 40 min |
| Palm Jumeirah | about 40 km; roughly 40 min | about 40 km; roughly 50 min |
| Zayed International (AUH) | about 130 km; roughly 1 h 30 | about 95 km; roughly 1 h 15 |
| Central Abu Dhabi | about 155 km; roughly 1 h 40 | about 120 km; roughly 1 h 25 |
As a planning allowance of our own (not a measured figure), add 30 to 50 percent to any of these for the evening peak on Sheikh Zayed Road and for Friday and Saturday afternoons. The pattern to take away: DXB wins clearly for Downtown and the older hotel districts, the two airports are within about 10 minutes of each other for the Marina and the Palm, and DWC is the shorter run only for Jebel Ali and the Abu Dhabi side of the emirate.
If your trip ends in Abu Dhabi, our page on the Dubai airport to Abu Dhabi transfer covers the road in detail, and the reverse run is on the Abu Dhabi airport to Dubai page.
How do you get from DXB to DWC, or from DWC into the city?
Dubai Airports' transfers page states that DWC is about 60 km from DXB. For passengers connecting between the two, it says to clear passport control and collect your bags, then take a taxi or the Dubai Metro to Ibn Battuta station and change to a dedicated bus to DWC. That is a two-leg journey with luggage, so treat it as an hour-plus plan, not a quick hop.
For a normal arrival at Al Maktoum, your options are narrower than at DXB:
- Taxi: the DWC airport site lists an airport taxi service. We could not confirm the ride-hailing pick-up arrangements, so check the airport site before relying on an app.
- Public transport: Dubai Airports' own instruction for the DXB link is the Red Line to Ibn Battuta station and then a dedicated bus. Because routes and stations can be revised, check the RTA planner on the day.
- Pre-booked private transfer: a driver tracks the flight, waits, and drives straight to the hotel with no change.
By contrast, DXB has Red Line stations at Terminals 1 and 3 and ranks at each terminal, so a first-time visitor can improvise there. At DWC, improvising costs time.
DWC vs DXB: which is better for you?
"Better" depends on where you are sleeping and what you are carrying. The comparison below uses the distances above and the airport facts we verified.
| DXB | DWC | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Downtown, Business Bay, Deira, the creek side | Jebel Ali, Dubai South and Abu Dhabi-bound trips |
| Airlines | Emirates, flydubai and most international carriers | Selected low-cost, charter and regional carriers |
| Metro | Red Line at Terminals 1 and 3 | Red Line to Ibn Battuta, then a dedicated bus |
| Taxi ranks | Ranks at each terminal, 24/7 | Airport taxi service listed on the DWC site |
| Long-term outlook | Remains the main hub for now | Expected to absorb growth, starting with flydubai from around 2027 |
If you can choose, DXB is the lower-effort airport for almost every visitor. If you cannot choose, the way to protect your evening is to arrange the ride before you fly and to pad your connection plans, because the road leg from DWC is longer and has fewer fallbacks.
Is DWC replacing DXB?
Not for the foreseeable future, and not on a date anyone has committed to. The published direction is that DXB is expected to be gradually supplemented by DWC as the new complex opens, with flydubai and Emirates named in press reports as likely users of the new capacity. That is a migration over years, which means the airport you use in 2027 may differ from the one you used in 2025, even on the same route.
What this means in practice: if you are booking a flight for 2027 or later, read the airport code on the ticket every time, not just the first time. And if you are a frequent visitor who has memorised the DXB routine, expect that the routine will change for some carriers.
Layovers and separate tickets between the two airports
A connection between DXB and DWC is not a normal transfer. Dubai Airports' transfers page says travellers who do not need a visa, or who hold a Dubai visa and are on separate tickets, must clear passport control, collect their bags and check in again. If you need help moving bags and have no Dubai visa, the Marhaba desk at the transfer area offers a paid assistance service.
Build in the following if you ever have to make this move yourself:
- Allow for immigration and baggage claim at the arriving airport, which is the part that varies most.
- Add the roughly 60 km road leg plus the time to find the pickup point.
- Re-check in, drop bags and clear security at the departing airport.
- Keep a cushion for the evening peak.
As our own planning allowance (not an airport rule), four to five hours between landing and the next departure is a cautious minimum for a self-made cross-airport connection, and separate tickets carry no protection if you miss the second flight.
Where a private car fits, and where it does not
The honest answer first: if you land at DXB, travel light, and your hotel is on the Red Line, the metro is quick and inexpensive. A private car earns its place when you land at DWC, land late, travel with children, or carry more bags than a metro carriage welcomes. The Dubai Airports metro page itself recommends travelling light with up to two pieces of luggage.
Our Dubai airport pickup covers DXB arrivals, with the name board waiting inside arrivals if you ask for it. For hotel-to-hotel moves, the Dubai hotel transfers page lists the districts we serve, and our airport meet-and-greet service is described separately. If you want a car and driver for a day rather than a single run, see car with driver in Dubai.
How to confirm which airport your flight uses
Do these checks in order and you will not be surprised at the kerb:
- Read the airport code on the e-ticket: DXB or DWC.
- Open the airline's booking page and look at the operating terminal, where one is shown.
- Compare the flight number with the airline directory at Dubai Airports, which lists airlines by DXB terminal and DWC.
- Look at the flight board on the airport website on the day of travel.
- If you have already booked a ground transfer, send the operator the flight number and let them verify the airport.
Our desk tracks the flight on every airport pickup, which includes picking up the correct airport if an airline moves a service. A driver who has the flight number does not depend on the terminal printed in a message sent weeks earlier.
For wider planning across the region, the Middle East hub and the airport transfers hub list every airport we cover, and the planning notes in our Dubai to Abu Dhabi bus vs private car post compare modes for the longer run.
Frequently asked questions
Is Al Maktoum Airport finished?
No. The airport is operating, with a smaller set of airlines than DXB, while a very large expansion is planned. A report published on 5 October 2026 says the second runway is due in 2027, phase one of the new complex in 2032, and a full build-out with no firm date. Treat any opening date as a target.
Which airlines use Al Maktoum airport?
Dubai Airports' airline directory lists carriers such as Wizz Air, Jazeera Airways, Gulf Air, flynas, Eurowings, Norwegian, Transavia France and VietJet Air at DWC, plus cargo operators. Lists change by season, so confirm your own flight on the airline's booking page.
Is DWC replacing DXB?
Not today. Press reports say flydubai may begin moving part of its operation to DWC from around 2027, with other airlines to follow later. DXB remains the main passenger airport for now, and the full move is a multi-year plan.
Is DWC better than DXB?
For most visitors, DXB is easier, because it is closer to Downtown, has metro stations at Terminals 1 and 3, and has taxi ranks at each terminal. DWC can be closer to Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi, but it has fewer fallbacks if your pickup fails.
How far is DWC from DXB?
Dubai Airports' transfers page gives about 60 km. A taxi or the Red Line to Ibn Battuta station, then a dedicated bus, is the official public connection. Allow well over an hour door to door, and longer with luggage and immigration queues.
How long does it take to drive from DWC to Dubai Marina and Downtown?
Road routing (OSRM) puts the Marina at about 30 km and roughly 40 minutes without traffic, and Downtown at about 50 km and roughly 50 minutes. Evening peak and weekend traffic can add 30 to 50 percent (our planning allowance), so leave a cushion for the return.
Do I need a visa to connect between DXB and DWC on separate tickets?
Travellers on separate tickets who do not need a visa or who hold a Dubai visa must clear passport control and collect bags, according to Dubai Airports. Anyone needing a visa should check entry rules for their passport with the official UAE sources before booking.
