Tulum Airport vs Cancún Airport: Which to Fly Into for Tulum and the Riviera Maya

Tulum's own airport opened in December 2023 and promises a short ride to the beach. Cancún still has the bigger route map. Here are the real distances, who gains time at each end, and the one resort stretch where the older airport wins.

Should you fly into Tulum airport or Cancún airport?

Fly into Tulum airport (TQO) if your hotel is in Tulum town or its beach zone and a direct flight suits you: the ride is roughly 45 minutes without traffic. Choose Cancún (CUN) for Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos or Cancún itself, or for the widest choice of flights. Cancún to Tulum is about 115 km (72 mi).

The question comes down to where you sleep, what the cheapest realistic flight is, and how much you value a short ride after landing. Tulum International Airport, officially Felipe Carrillo Puerto, opened on 1 December 2023. It is much younger than Cancún's airport, which has been the gateway to the Mexican Caribbean for decades. That age gap shows up in the number of routes, the facilities and the variety of ground transport.

This article does not rank them. It sets out the numbers that decide the choice for four common trips: a Tulum beach stay, an Akumal or Playa del Carmen base, a Cancún resort week, and a split itinerary with a night at each end.

Every drive figure on this page is a rounded free-flow result from OSRM road routing. They differ slightly between sources because the airport sits inland from the town, and because "Tulum" can mean the town, the beach hotel zone or the archaeological site. Use the ranges as planning figures and confirm the final leg with your hotel's address. The official airport site is aitulum.com, and Cancún's is cancunairport.com.

Distance and drive time to the places people actually stay

The airport you choose matters most when you start from a specific destination. These are approximate road distances; drive times assume daytime, dry conditions and a direct run.

  • Tulum town and beach hotels. From TQO, about 40 km (25 mi) and roughly 45 minutes without traffic. From CUN, about 115 km (72 mi) and roughly 1 h 30. Traffic through the centre of Tulum can be slow, so the last few kilometres can take longer than the first fifty.
  • Akumal. From TQO, about 70 km (43 mi), roughly 1 h 10. From CUN, about 90 km (56 mi) along Highway 307, also roughly 1 h 10 without traffic, so the two airports are about level for Akumal.
  • Playa del Carmen. From TQO, about 105 km (65 mi), roughly 1 h 35. From CUN, about 55 km (34 mi), roughly 45 minutes. Playa sits much nearer Cancún's airport than Tulum's.
  • Puerto Morelos and Cancún's Hotel Zone. These are Cancún-airport trips: under an hour. Flying into Tulum would add a long drive north.

If you are comparing the Cancún-to-Tulum leg in detail, our Cancún Airport to Tulum transfer page lists the stops and timing. For Playa, see Cancún Airport to Playa del Carmen.

Where the Tulum airport really saves time

The saving is real for one traveller in particular: someone staying in Tulum town, the beach zone or the cenotes and jungle hotels south of town. A transfer of roughly 1 h 30 without traffic from Cancún, and up to two hours in traffic, falls to about 45 minutes. For a family arriving at 10 pm with young children, 45 minutes versus about 90 is the difference between bed at 11 and bed at midnight.

A shorter ride has secondary benefits.

  • Less time on Highway 307. It is the main artery along the coast, so a traffic jam or an accident on it can hold up a long drive after a long flight.
  • Lower transfer cost in principle. Transfers are priced by distance and time, so a shorter leg should cost less than the 115 km run. Confirm the quoted total on your dates.

The caveats are equally real. The route map is smaller, so you may need a connection through Mexico City, Miami or another hub, which can cancel the time you saved on the ground. Flight-data sites list seasonal nonstops from several Canadian and U.S. cities, but schedules change from season to season, so check the airline's own site rather than a third-party summary.

Where Cancún airport still wins

Cancún wins on four counts.

  1. Route choice. Many more airlines and departure times, including the early or late slots that make a short trip workable.
  2. Playa del Carmen and the north coast. Anything between Puerto Morelos and Playa is nearer to Cancún's runway than Tulum's, sometimes by an hour.
  3. Disruption cover. If a flight is cancelled, a large airport offers more rebooking options and more same-day departures.
  4. Cancún itself. Hotel Zone, Isla Mujeres ferry and Costa Mujeres stays are simpler from the airport that sits next to them. Our guide to airport transfers from Cancún covers resort drop-offs, Cancún hotel zone transfers cover the strip itself, and the Caribbean and Mexico hub lists every other resort airport we cover.

There is one more argument for Cancún that rarely appears in comparisons: a split stay. If you intend to spend three nights in Playa and three in Tulum, flying into Cancún and out of Tulum (or the reverse) can remove a backtrack, provided the airline will price an open-jaw ticket sensibly.

Flights and fares: compare the total, not the ticket

A cheaper ticket into Cancún can lose its advantage after the ground transfer. A reliable way to judge is to total four numbers for each option.

  1. The airfare. Include checked-bag fees if you are on a low-cost carrier.
  2. The ground transfer. Get a quote for your hotel and your dates.
  3. The extra hotel night or lost hours. If the Cancún flight arrives at midnight and the final leg to Tulum adds two hours, you might pay for a first night you cannot use.
  4. The return leg. The same ride in reverse before a morning flight.

We do not print fares for our own service in articles. The booker shows a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup point, drop-off and vehicle before you pay, and it is the same number whether or not the flight is late.

Do the sum for both airports on the dates you can fly. The cheaper total wins, unless a connection makes the flight itself slower.

For families and groups of three or more, a private car is usually simpler than a bus. For a solo traveller with a backpack and no deadline, the scheduled coach can be the cheapest sensible option.

Arrival-day rules that apply at both airports

The Government of Canada's travel advice for Mexico asks visitors to use only officially marked taxis, to avoid hailing taxis on the street, to book and pre-pay inside the terminal or at a designated boarding area if paying by card, and never to share a taxi with strangers. That advice applies to Quintana Roo like anywhere else in the country. The Cancún airport's own site goes further and tells visitors to pre-arrange their transport to their hotel.

Check entry rules before you fly. Canadians do not need a tourist visa for stays up to 180 days, but the officer sets the permitted period, and the multiple digital migratory form (FMMD) must be completed online and kept with you. Read the current Government of Canada travel advice for Mexico, and our guide on whether you need a passport for Mexico if you are unsure about documents.

When you book a car, give the flight number. A slow immigration line or a late landing does not cost extra, because international arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting. Meet and greet with a name board is available inside arrivals, and car seats for infants and toddlers can be added at booking.

Seasons, hurricanes and delays

Both airports sit in the same weather system. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the U.S. National Hurricane Center puts the peak around 10 September, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. If you are travelling in that window, a larger airport with more flights offers more recovery options, while a smaller one can see fewer disruptions on a normal day. Neither is immune.

Sargassum, the seaweed that has affected Quintana Roo beaches, is another seasonal factor. It affects beaches rather than airports, but it might influence which part of the coast you choose to stay on and therefore which airport suits you. Our guide to the best time to visit Cancún covers the calendar.

A simple decision guide

  • Tulum beach or town, flight available at a sensible price: Tulum airport.
  • Akumal, if the Tulum flight is expensive or has a connection: Cancún airport, with a car to the coast.
  • Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Cancún Hotel Zone: Cancún airport.
  • Two bases, Playa then Tulum: Cancún in, Tulum out, or the reverse, priced as an open-jaw ticket.
  • Travelling with small children or elderly parents: whichever airport shortens the last leg, even if the flight costs a little more.
  • A tight, short trip: the airport with the nonstop.

If Cancún is your choice, the terminal guide to Cancún airport explains where each airline arrives and where drivers meet you.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tulum airport better than Cancún airport?

It is better only for travellers staying in or near Tulum. The ride to Tulum town from TQO is roughly 45 minutes without traffic, against roughly 1 h 30 from Cancún. For Playa del Carmen, the north coast and Cancún itself, the older airport is closer and has more flights.

How far is Tulum airport from Tulum?

Sources give different figures because of the reference point. It is roughly 20 km southwest of the town in a straight line and about 40 km (25 mi) by road, depending on where in Tulum you are going. Allow about 45 minutes for the drive to hotels, longer through the centre in traffic.

How far is Cancún airport from Tulum?

About 115 km (72 mi) by road, along Highway 307, and a drive of roughly 1 h 30 without stops or traffic. Traffic or an accident can stretch that towards two hours. Transfers to beachfront hotels south of Tulum town add a little more.

Which airport is cheaper to fly into?

Cancún is often the cheaper ticket because more airlines serve it, but compare the total including the ground transfer. A cheaper flight into Cancún can cost more overall if the long ride, a hotel night or a lost half-day offsets the saving.

Is there public transport from Tulum airport?

We could not confirm a scheduled public service from the airport, so check the airport's own site, aitulum.com, for current ground options. Officially marked taxis and pre-arranged cars are the standard choices, and the Government of Canada advises against hailing taxis on the street.

Are Uber and taxis allowed at Cancún airport?

Cancún's airport site lists official airport taxis, public buses and hotel transfers, and advises pre-arranging transport to your hotel. For ride-hailing, confirm the driver and licence plate before you get in, as Canadian travel advice recommends, and expect pickup rules to differ from those for airport taxis.

Can I fly into one airport and out of the other?

Yes, as an open-jaw ticket, which suits a split stay between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Price it against a return ticket to a single airport, and include the ground transfers. Whether it saves money depends on your dates and carrier.
