How early should you leave, and what are Pearson security wait times?
Pearson security wait times are usually short, so your ticket's deadlines matter more. Be at Pearson three hours before a U.S. or international flight, especially one leaving before 9 am, which is Air Canada's own guidance. Allow two hours for domestic. Then add your drive time and a 30-minute buffer.
Most advice about airport arrival times stops at that one number. It is more useful to treat it as the last step of a countdown that begins at your front door. A flight to London at 7:30 am has a take-off time, a bag-drop deadline, a security-screening allowance, a parking or drop-off allowance, a drive and, before all that, an alarm clock. This article builds that chain for Pearson, using the figures the airline and the screening authority publish, and adds drive times from three starting points.
Two notes on sources. The arrival recommendation comes from Air Canada's check-in guidance for Toronto departures. Screening performance comes from CATSA, the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority. Where neither publishes a Pearson-specific number, we say so rather than invent one.
What the official numbers say about Pearson security wait times
CATSA reports wait times nationally rather than airport by airport. Its key performance indicators page for April to June 2026, the first quarter of its 2026-27 year, says 97.6% of passengers were screened in under 15 minutes at the designated airports that use Boarding Pass Security System technology. Monthly figures on the same page were 97.2% for April, 97.4% for May and 97.6% for June.
Read that carefully. It is a national average across many airports, and it counts passengers rather than minutes at Pearson on a Monday at 6 am. It tells you the system normally works; it does not promise that your lane will be quiet. CATSA also says it updates wait times every minute on its current wait times page, which is worth checking from the kerb before you commit to a long queue.
You will see claims elsewhere of an "average Pearson wait" in minutes. Those come from modelled estimates and they disagree with one another, so we do not repeat them. The pattern that does repeat across guides is that the heaviest security pressure falls in the early-morning bank, roughly 6 to 9 am, and again in the late afternoon and early evening, roughly 4 to 7 pm. Both overlap with busy departure banks, and both are also when the roads to Pearson are slowest.
The arrival-time rule that applies to your ticket
Air Canada advises arriving no later than three hours before a U.S. or international flight that departs before 9 am from Pearson. For flights later in the day, the airline's pages do not set a single universal number that we could verify, and older guidance quoted in 2021 news coverage (two hours for U.S. flights, three for other international) is out of date. The practical answer is to treat three hours as the working rule for any international departure, and to read your own itinerary.
For flights within Canada, a two-hour allowance is a sensible planning rule rather than a published requirement. For U.S. flights, remember the next section: you clear U.S. customs in Toronto, not on landing, so your journey through the terminal is longer than a domestic one.
Whatever you decide, find the check-in and bag-drop cut-off printed on your booking. It is set by the airline, it differs by route and carrier, and Air Canada's pages show it has been worded differently over time, so only your own booking is reliable. The cut-off is a different deadline from the screening line: you can reach security quickly and still be turned away at the counter if your bag arrives after the closing time.
U.S. preclearance adds a second checkpoint
If you are flying to the United States, you pass through U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspection at Pearson before you board. In Terminal 1 the transborder area is Pier F, sealed airside from the rest of the building. Terminal 3 has its own preclearance facility, on the concourse that handles flights to the United States.
That means a U.S.-bound passenger faces both CATSA screening and a border inspection. Both can queue at the same morning peaks. If you are connecting on to a U.S. flight from a long-haul arrival, you will be asked to clear this step, so give yourself more than the minimum between flights. Our guide to Pearson Terminal 1 vs Terminal 3 shows where each airline sits, and why the terminal matters for both your driver and your queue.
Work backwards: three worked examples
The easiest way to stop guessing is to run the arithmetic. Below are three flights and the departure-from-home time each implies. Distances are OSRM road distances. Drive times are free-flow figures plus our own rush-hour allowance, not guarantees.
Example 1: 7:30 am international departure, driving from Markham. Arrive at Pearson by 4:30 am (three hours). A pre-dawn drive of roughly 42 km takes about 40 minutes without traffic. Add 15 minutes for kerb or parking. Leave by 3:30 am.
Example 2: 2:15 pm domestic departure, from downtown Toronto. Arrive at 12:15 pm. The drive of about 31 km takes 30 to 35 minutes off-peak and up to 60 minutes at midday if the Gardiner is slow. Leave by 11:00 am.
Example 3: 6:00 pm U.S. departure, from Oakville. Arrive at 3:00 pm for the preclearance step. Oakville to Pearson is roughly 29 km, but a Friday afternoon on the QEW can double the drive. Leave by 1:15 pm.
None of those leave-home times assume a crash on the 401, a closed ramp or a long wait at the kerb. Add a buffer that you will not enjoy spending, because the day you need it is the day you will be glad it exists.
Drive times to Pearson from three starting points
Distances are road distances from OSRM and the off-peak times are its free-flow estimates; the rush-hour column is our own planning allowance. Conditions change by the day.
| Starting point | Distance to Pearson | Off-peak drive | Rush-hour drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Toronto (Union Station) | about 31 km | 30 to 35 min | 50 to 70 min |
| Markham (Highway 7 and Woodbine) | about 42 km | about 40 min | 70 to 100 min |
| Oakville (Dundas and Trafalgar) | about 29 km | 30 to 35 min | 60 to 90 min |
All three starting points have an alternative to driving yourself, and the table below compares the ways of making the trip. Prices shown are public figures; the private-car fare is quoted in the booker for your exact address.
| Mode | Typical door-to-terminal time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive and park | Drive plus 20 to 40 min parking | Parking rates published by the airport | Solo, short trips |
| UP Express from Union | About 28 min train plus your connection to Union | Adult $12.35 one way (as of 2026) | Downtown starts, light luggage |
| Taxi or rideshare | Same as the drive | Metered or surge-priced | One-off, off-peak |
| Private car | Same as the drive, no parking step | Fixed fare via booker | Early flights, families, 3+ bags |
The UP Express travels between Union Station and Pearson's Terminal 1 station in about 28 minutes, according to its operator, and the adult one-way fare is $12.35 on the UP Express fares page. It is the strongest option when your day starts downtown and you carry one bag; our UP Express comparison covers the cases where a car wins. It is the weakest option for a 4:30 am arrival time, when you have to reach Union first.
Seasons, holidays and the weeks to treat differently
Not every week at Pearson is the same, and the long weekends are the ones that catch people out.
- Christmas and New Year, March break and the summer holiday weeks. Families travel, check-in lines and security lanes grow, and the roads are full. Add 30 to 45 minutes to your normal arrival time rather than trimming it.
- Long weekends. Civic Holiday, Labour Day, Canada Day and Victoria Day all bring Friday and Monday peaks on the highways.
- Winter storms. A snow day on the 401 moves your leave-home time more than any screening queue. Check the forecast the night before.
Mistakes that cost people flights
A handful of avoidable errors cause most missed departures.
- Going to the wrong terminal. Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are linked by the free Terminal Link train, but there is no connection between them after security. If you realise you are at the wrong one, you queue again.
- Treating the screening time as the deadline. The binding limit is the airline's bag-drop and check-in cut-off, not the length of the line.
- Packing liquids and electronics badly. CATSA says liquids go in containers of 100 ml or less inside a clear one-litre resealable bag in your carry-on, and your laptop goes into a bin with your coat and belt. Empty your pockets before the belt, not at it.
- Under-estimating the road. People check the distance but not the day of the week. An 8 am Monday and a 2 pm Wednesday are not the same drive.
- Not tracking the car. A driver who tracks your flight absorbs a delayed departure or an early arrival without you phoning anyone.
When a pre-booked car changes the maths
A private car does not shorten the screening line. It removes the failure points before and after it: parking, the shuttle, the rideshare that cancels at 4 am, the surge price at the worst moment. For a pre-dawn departure you set the pickup time with the confirmation, the driver tracks your flight, and you step out of the car at the right terminal door.
For the return, your driver tracks the landing and meets you where the Pearson arrivals meeting points guide says pickups happen. A slow customs hall is covered by free waiting time: 60 minutes after international landings and 30 after domestic ones. Families with infants can ask for a child seat when they book.
If you live in Markham or the east GTA, our Markham airport limo page covers pickup areas, and the Pearson airport transfer page lists meeting points at both terminals. The wider airport limo hub covers the rest of the GTA, and the Toronto and GTA hub lists every area we serve.
Final timeline you can copy
- Write down your departure time and the airline's bag-drop cut-off.
- Subtract three hours for international or U.S. flights (more in holiday weeks), or two for domestic.
- Subtract your rush-hour drive time from the table, not the off-peak one.
- Subtract 15 minutes for the kerb or parking.
- Subtract a buffer of 30 minutes. That is your leave-home time.
Frequently asked questions
How early should I get to Pearson for an international flight?
Air Canada advises being at the airport at least three hours before a U.S. or international flight that leaves before 9 am. For later international departures, three hours is still the working rule most travellers use. Your itinerary's bag-drop cut-off is the deadline that actually closes the counter.
What are the security wait times at Pearson right now?
CATSA updates security wait times every minute on its website, so check there before you leave. CATSA's national figure for April to June 2026 was 97.6% of passengers screened in under 15 minutes, though that covers designated airports nationally rather than Pearson alone.
How early should I arrive for a domestic flight from Pearson?
Two hours is a sensible planning rule, but it is not a published airline requirement. Add time in holiday weeks and for early-morning departures. Check the bag-drop closing time on your own ticket, because that is the deadline you cannot negotiate.
Is U.S. customs at Pearson before or after security?
You clear U.S. customs inside the airport before boarding, so you pass CATSA screening and then a U.S. border inspection. In Terminal 1 this is on Pier F, and Terminal 3 has its own preclearance facility. Both can queue at the same morning peaks as security.
What time is Pearson busiest?
Guides point to early morning, roughly 6 to 9 am, and late afternoon into early evening, roughly 4 to 7 pm. Holiday weeks and long weekends add pressure on top of those windows.
How long does the drive to Pearson take from downtown or Markham?
From downtown Toronto, about 31 km, expect 30 to 35 minutes off-peak and 50 to 70 minutes at rush hour. From Markham, about 42 km, expect about 40 minutes off-peak and 70 to 100 minutes in the evening peak. The rush-hour figures are our planning allowance; use the higher figure when you plan.
What is the bag-drop cut-off at Pearson?
It is set by your airline, differs between domestic, U.S. and other international flights, and has been worded differently on airline pages over time. Read the time printed on your own booking and treat it as the real deadline. Trusted-traveller programs can shorten a queue but do not move it.
