Cancún Airport Terminals 2, 3 and 4: Which One Is Yours, and Where Your Driver Waits

Cancún has several passenger buildings and no single public map that says which airline lives where. Here is the usual pattern, how to cross the sales corridor without stopping, and how to find a driver outside.

Which terminal does your airline use at Cancún airport?

Cancún International Airport (CUN) has separate passenger terminals, and the usual pattern puts most US legacy airlines in Terminal 3, several low-cost and European carriers in Terminal 4, and Latin American and domestic carriers in Terminal 2. Airlines move between buildings, so confirm the terminal on your own booking.

Cancún is run by ASUR, the operator that publishes the official airport pages for Cancún and several other Mexican airports. Those pages cover shops, restaurants and services, and the airport's public pages we could open do not print an airline-by-terminal list. The assignments below come from third-party airline and transfer guides, which we could not confirm with the airport operator, and the guides disagree in places. Treat them as the usual arrangement reported by others, not a guarantee. The reliable source for your flight is the booking confirmation or the airline app, which show the terminal.

That caution matters more than at most airports because Cancún's buildings are not interchangeable. If you are dropped at the wrong one, the fix is a transfer between terminals, which costs time you may not have on a busy departure morning.

If your real question is which Mexican Caribbean airport suits your hotel, our comparison of Tulum airport vs Cancún airport covers that choice, and the rest of this guide assumes you are flying in or out of Cancún itself.

The usual airline-to-terminal pattern

Use this table as a planning map and confirm before you travel.

TerminalUsually reported airlinesNotes
Terminal 2Volaris, Viva Aerobus and, on some routes, Aeroméxico, plus other Latin American carriersReported as mostly domestic and Latin American flights
Terminal 3American, Delta, UnitedReported as the main building for US network carriers
Terminal 4Southwest, JetBlue, Frontier, Air France, KLM, Turkish AirlinesReported as the newest building

The Canadian airlines are the ones guides disagree about. Air Canada and WestJet appear in different terminals in different guides, and some guides omit them, so we have left them out of the table. If you are flying from Toronto, which most readers of this site are, do not assume. Open the airline app and read the terminal line.

Seasonal flights and codeshares complicate the map further. A flight sold by one airline and operated by another is handled at the operating airline's terminal.

Are the terminals connected, and can you walk between them?

Third-party guides describe the terminals as separate buildings rather than one connected hall, and they advise against walking between them with luggage. The same guides describe a free shuttle between terminals roughly every 10 to 15 minutes. We could not confirm the shuttle or its frequency with the airport operator, so check the signs on arrival.

The practical rule: pick the right terminal the first time. If you are coming from a hotel on the Cancún strip, the Playa del Carmen corridor or Tulum, the address your driver heads for should be the terminal on your ticket, not "the airport".

For arrivals the issue is mirror-image. If your pre-booked driver is waiting at the terminal printed on an early confirmation and the airline has since moved your flight, you will walk out and not find them. That is why our desk checks the flight number against the live schedule on the day.

Walking through arrivals: immigration, bags, customs

The sequence is the same at every terminal.

  1. Immigration. You show your passport and answer the officer's questions. Keep any form or slip you are given; you may be asked for it again on departure.
  2. Baggage claim. Wait for your bags at the carousel assigned to your flight.
  3. Customs. Mexico uses a random-selection light at the customs line. A green light lets you through; a red light means a bag inspection.
  4. The corridor. After customs you walk toward the exit through a stretch lined with people offering transport, tours and "welcome" desks.

Entry rules, including whether your passport is enough, are in our guide on whether you need a passport for Mexico.

As our own planning allowance, allow roughly 45 to 90 minutes from landing to the kerb at a busy hour, and longer when several wide-body flights from Europe and the US land together. Peak travel seasons around the winter holidays, spring break and the weeks around Easter are the slowest.

The timeshare corridor: how to walk through without stopping

Between customs and the exit there is a corridor that some visitors call a "shark tank". Many of the people in it work for timeshare and tour companies, and the first thing they say is usually friendly and often sounds official.

The Government of Canada's Mexico travel advice puts the risk plainly: timeshare sales representatives often use pressure tactics, and you can cancel a timeshare contract without penalty within five working days by writing to the company. It also recommends reviewing any contract carefully and consulting a Mexican attorney before buying. Those are the facts to hold on to if you ever end up in a sales presentation.

A simple method keeps you out of the corridor's pull:

  • Have your driver's name or the pickup instructions on your phone, so you are not asking strangers where to go.
  • Keep walking, make eye contact only when you have to, and say "no, gracias" once.
  • Do not accept a "free" shuttle, a free taxi voucher or a discounted tour from anyone who approaches you indoors.
  • Do not hand over your passport, boarding pass or hotel booking to anyone who is not your named driver.
  • Do not stop to look at a counter you did not plan to visit. A genuine ground-transport desk does not need to approach you.

If your name appears on a board held by someone you can see, check it matches your booking, then follow them to the vehicle.

Where pre-booked drivers wait outside each terminal

For a pre-booked transfer, the driver's job is to be at the first point you can reach after the corridor. If you asked for a name board, the driver usually stands at the exit with your name or an alias printed on it. If you did not, the driver waits at the pickup point named in your confirmation.

Two details help the handover:

  • Know your terminal. The pickup point is described by terminal, so give your flight number at booking and update it if the airline changes it.
  • Text before you walk out. Tell the driver you are through customs so they can be at the kerb as you arrive. Cancún's exit corridors are long enough that a minute of notice saves you wandering.

Exact bay numbers change with construction and operator contracts, and the airport's public pages do not print them by terminal. Rely on the pickup instructions in your own confirmation, not a number you read on a forum.

Cancún airport to your hotel: modes, times and who they suit

Distances from the airport depend on the exact hotel. Road routing (OSRM) gives about 13 km (8 mi) to the southern end of the Hotel Zone near Punta Nizuc and roughly 25 km (15 mi) to the northern end of the strip, about 19 km (12 mi) to downtown Cancún, about 55 km (34 mi) to Playa del Carmen and about 115 km (72 mi) to Tulum. The airport sits at the southern end of the Hotel Zone, so the south end of the strip is the shortest run.

The ADO bus is a good plain choice when you arrive in daylight with one bag and a hotel near a bus stop. The private car wins for resorts that sit far from a bus route, for families with car seats, for late arrivals when shared shuttles are thinning out, and for a first night in a country where the hotel check-in details are not clear.

Our Cancún airport resort transfers page lists the typical resort runs, the Cancún Hotel Zone transfers page covers the strip, and the Cancún airport to Playa del Carmen transfer is the route most Riviera Maya guests take. Taxis, cards and the safe way to pay

The Government of Canada advises that if you want to pay by card, it is safer to book and pre-pay either inside the terminal or at the designated boarding area outside, and to avoid paying by card inside a taxi. It also says to avoid hailing taxis on the street and never to share a taxi with strangers. These are general rules for Mexico, and they apply at the Cancún kerb as much as anywhere.

Carry small bills for tips and tolls, and agree the fare before you get in whenever it is not printed on a ticket. If you booked a private transfer, the fare was fixed and quoted before you paid, so there is nothing to negotiate at the kerb.

Departing from Cancún: terminal, timing and traffic

Departures follow the same terminal logic, with two extra reasons to be early. The Hotel Zone has a single main road, Boulevard Kukulcán, and it slows to a crawl on weekend evenings and holiday mornings. And airline queues at the busiest terminals can be long at the start of the morning bank of US flights.

As our own planning allowance, leave your Hotel Zone hotel about four hours before a US or Canada flight, which gives time for the road, check-in, security and a cushion. If you are coming from Playa del Carmen or Tulum, add the longer drive on Highway 307 and leave earlier.

Check your terminal the night before. If the airline changed it, you want to know at the hotel, not at the kerb. When we send a car, we confirm the terminal with you at pickup so the driver heads for the right building.

Common Cancún airport mistakes

  1. Assuming the terminal from the airline's name alone. Codeshares and seasonal flights break the pattern.
  2. Believing anyone who says they are "from the airport" or "from your hotel" inside the arrivals corridor. Verify against your booking.
  3. Leaving the check of a transfer to the last minute. Pre-book, especially for groups and for February to April.
  4. Walking between terminals with luggage. If you are in the wrong one, ask staff about the inter-terminal shuttle.
  5. Skipping the weather check on a summer morning. Afternoon thunderstorms can delay departures, and a late-night arrival is easier with a driver tracking your flight.

Frequently asked questions

Which terminal does American Airlines use at Cancún?

Third-party guides place American, Delta and United in Terminal 3, but we could not confirm this with the airport operator. Airlines can reassign terminals, so check your booking or app before you travel. The assignment printed on your ticket is the one that counts.

Which terminal do Air Canada and WestJet use at Cancún?

Sources disagree, and we could not confirm either airline's terminal with the airport operator. For Canadian flights, rely on the terminal shown in your airline app, not a general list.

Can you walk from Terminal 3 to Terminal 4 at Cancún airport?

Guides describe the terminals as separate buildings and advise against walking between them with luggage. A free shuttle between terminals is described as running roughly every 10 to 15 minutes, which we could not confirm with the operator.

What is the timeshare gauntlet at Cancún airport?

It is the corridor between customs and the exit where timeshare and tour sellers approach arriving passengers. The Government of Canada says timeshare representatives often use pressure tactics and that a timeshare contract can be cancelled without penalty within five working days. Keep walking and decline politely.

Is it safe to take a taxi from Cancún airport?

Use the official counter or a pre-booked car, and prepay where possible. The Government of Canada recommends booking and prepaying inside the terminal or at the designated boarding area, avoiding card payment inside a taxi, and not hailing taxis on the street.

How far is Cancún airport from the Hotel Zone, Playa del Carmen and Tulum?

Road routing gives about 13 to 25 km (8 to 15 mi) to the Hotel Zone strip depending on the hotel, about 55 km (34 mi) to Playa del Carmen and about 115 km (72 mi) to Tulum. Without traffic that is roughly 15 to 25 minutes, 45 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes, with more in peak traffic.

How long does it take to get out of Cancún airport after landing?

As a planning allowance of our own, allow 45 to 90 minutes from landing to the kerb at a busy hour, longer when several wide-body flights land together. International arrivals at the winter holiday and spring break peaks are slowest.
