Most guests arriving in the Bay Area land at San Francisco International (SFO), which sits on the western shore of the bay about 21 km south of Union Square. Oakland (OAK), across the bay, is the other airport that works for a San Francisco hotel. This page covers a San Francisco airport transfer to your hotel from both: the districts, the distances, the train, the taxi and the private car, plus the hills that decide where a vehicle can actually stop. When a car is the better choice, Onroutz.ca sends a licensed local transfer partner to meet you and drive you to the hotel entrance on a fixed fare.
For the airport side of the story (terminals, drive times to Silicon Valley and wine country), see our SFO airport page. This page works backwards from the hotel.
What is the best airport transfer to a San Francisco hotel?
BART from SFO's International Terminal is the fastest way to hotels near Market Street, about 30 minutes without road traffic. A private car is better for Nob Hill, Fisherman's Wharf, the Marina and anyone with luggage or children: about 21 km, 25 to 50 minutes, door to door. Oakland has its own BART link.
The honest rule of thumb: if you are one person with one bag and your hotel is within a few blocks of a BART station, take the train. If you are three people with checked bags, landing late, with a hotel up a hill, take a car.
How far is each San Francisco hotel district from the airport?
Treat the figures as planning numbers: rounded road distances and ordinary-traffic times. The commute peaks are the problem: US-101 north of the airport is slow on weekday mornings and again from about 4 to 7 p.m., and the Bay Bridge adds delays from Oakland.
| Hotel district | From SFO (about) | Typical drive time | From Oakland (about) | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Union Square, Financial District | 21 km / 13 mi | 25–45 min | 30 km / 19 mi | 60–90 min at the weekday peak |
| SoMa and Moscone Center | 20 km / 12 mi | 25–45 min | 28 km / 17 mi | Conference mornings thicken the drop-off queue |
| Embarcadero | 21 km / 13 mi | 25–45 min | 29 km / 18 mi | Tight one-way streets near the Ferry Building |
| Nob Hill | 22 km / 14 mi | 30–50 min | 31 km / 19 mi | Steep streets; cable car tracks cross the area |
| Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach | 24 km / 15 mi | 30–50 min | 33 km / 20 mi | Heavy tourist traffic, especially in summer |
| Marina, Presidio, Pacific Heights | 24–26 km / 15–16 mi | 30–55 min | 34 km / 21 mi | Residential grids with limited kerb space |
Enter the hotel and cross street at booking, and the quote is tied to that exact address.

BART and the International Terminal
SFO's own ground-transportation page describes BART as the fastest way into San Francisco and the East Bay, with the station in the International Terminal and the AirTrain connecting to the domestic terminals. SFO's ground transportation guide lists the current pickup points, including Lyft and Uber on Level 5 of the Domestic Garage and taxis on the centre islands outside Arrivals. BART's SFO station page carries train times and fares, which change, so check them for your date instead of trusting an old article.
Oakland, the other way into the Bay
Oakland International is across the bay from San Francisco. The Oakland Airport Connector is a short ride to the Coliseum BART station, and the train then crosses under the bay to the city. Driving takes 25 to 40 minutes in light traffic over the Bay Bridge and can pass an hour at peak. The airport's own site, oaklandairport.com, lists the current options. Oakland suits travellers who found a better fare or schedule there, and a private car is useful when the hotel is on the north side of San Francisco, where BART does not go.
Free hotel shuttles at SFO
SFO notes that many local hotels offer complimentary shuttle service from designated zones, and asks guests to confirm with the hotel. Those shuttles serve hotels near the airport, in Burlingame, Millbrae, San Bruno and South San Francisco. A hotel in San Francisco proper almost never runs a free shuttle from the airport. The one on-airport hotel, the Grand Hyatt at SFO, has its own AirTrain station and enclosed link to the lobby, so a guest staying there needs no car at all. For anywhere in the city, the choice is BART, a taxi or a booked transfer.
When BART is the better choice
Take BART when you are travelling alone or as a pair with modest bags, your hotel is within a few minutes of a Market Street station (Powell, Montgomery, Civic Center, Embarcadero), and you land between the morning and evening peaks. The train is unaffected by US-101, and on a congested Thursday afternoon it will beat any car.
BART also has limits. Late-evening and overnight arrivals may find service winding down, so check the timetable before you rely on it. The walk from the platform to a hotel on Nob Hill or at the Wharf is long and steep, and the trip does not go north to the Marina or Presidio at all.
When a private car wins
- Three or more travellers. One vehicle, one pickup.
- Heavy luggage. A Luxury SUV seats up to six with five to six large bags, and the Executive Sprinter handles a party of 12 with 12 bags.
- Hotels away from BART. Nob Hill, Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, the Marina and Pacific Heights are all uphill or far from a station.
- Late arrivals. The driver tracks your flight, so a delayed landing still ends with a driver at arrivals.
- Children. Child, toddler and booster seats are added at booking.
- Business schedules. A 9 a.m. meeting after an early landing leaves little room for a transfer between train and taxi.
- Privacy. A calm, quiet cabin, and a chauffeur who keeps conversation to what you ask for.
Each vehicle class is shown on the fleet page; new to this kind of booking, start with how private airport transfers work.
Major hotels we drive to in San Francisco
These are hotels guests frequently book, with the nearest airport and a practical note about the approach. We drive to any San Francisco hotel or address you name.
| Hotel | District | Nearest airport | Pickup and drop-off note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fairmont San Francisco | Nob Hill | SFO | 950 Mason Street, at the top of Nob Hill; steep approach streets, and the California Street cable car passes the block |
| The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco | Nob Hill | SFO | 600 Stockton Street; Nob Hill streets are steep and one-way in places, so share the hotel name, not just the address |
| Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero | Financial District | SFO | 222 Sansome Street; commuter traffic builds on weekday evenings |
| The St. Regis San Francisco | SoMa | SFO | 125 Third Street, close to Yerba Buena Gardens and the Moscone Center; conference mornings bring heavier drop-off queues |
| Grand Hyatt at SFO | SFO Airport | SFO | 55 South McDonnell Road; on the airport, with its own AirTrain station, so a car is only needed for onward trips |
Hotels are listed to help you plan; listing does not mean the hotel is affiliated with or endorses Onroutz.ca.
Other well-known addresses include the Palace Hotel at the Financial District and SoMa edge, Parc 55 close to Powell Street, and the Westin St. Francis on Union Square. Tell the booker the hotel name and cross street, and the pickup note will match the actual approach.
San Francisco's hills and where the car can stop
San Francisco's grid ignores its hills, and that matters more for a hotel arrival than any distance. Nob Hill, Russian Hill and Pacific Heights have steep approaches. Some hotels have a loading bay on a side street, and many use a valet or doorman who directs vehicles on the block. Cable cars share some streets with traffic; SFMTA's cable car page explains the lines. If you stay in a private rental, tell us about gates or parking restrictions so the drop-off is planned.
At night the loading zones near Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf tighten up. A driver who knows the building and the cross street makes the handover quick.
Arriving at SFO and Oakland: where your driver meets you
SFO has Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3 and the International Terminal. Terminal rebuilds change kerb layouts, so your confirmation names the meeting point for your flight instead of relying on a general rule. SFO's page notes that charter pickups happen on the arrivals level, and that vehicles cannot wait at the terminal kerb or on airport roadways. Because the airport restricts waiting, the driver arrives against your tracked landing, not before it.
If your flight is from Toronto Pearson, check whether it is pre-cleared: Pearson is one of ten Canadian airports with U.S. preclearance, so those passengers arrive as domestic travellers. CBP lists the airports. A pre-cleared flight gets a 30-minute free waiting window; an international arrival gets 60.
Every airport pickup is flight-tracked. If you want a person with your name on a board inside arrivals, ask for meet and greet at booking, with an alias if you like; the airport meet and greet service page has the detail. The marine layer that rolls in on summer mornings slows arrivals, and our tracking follows the real landing rather than the schedule, so a delay does not become a missed pickup.
How the San Francisco transfer works with Onroutz.ca
Onroutz.ca is a transfer desk based in Toronto. Outside Toronto and the GTA, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local partner. Booking, confirmation, support and invoicing all stay with the Toronto desk, so there is one confirmation, one invoice and one 24/7 contact. US partners are US-licensed, and vehicles are no more than four model years old (Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach up to seven).
- The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
- Your confirmation names the vehicle class (Executive Sedan, First Class Sedan, Luxury SUV, Executive Sprinter or similar), the meeting point and the 24/7 contact.
- Your driver loads the luggage and takes you to the hotel door, or to the nearest permitted stop on a restricted block.
- If you need the car for the day, an hourly booking keeps the same driver with you.
Late-night arrivals, early departures and conferences
SFO's busiest banks are mid-morning and early evening, but red-eyes and long-haul flights land at the edges of the day. A 6 a.m. arrival means a fast drive into the city and a hotel that probably cannot give you a room yet, so ask about early check-in or a bag drop before you land. A 5 a.m. departure needs a pickup around 2 a.m., and the pre-booked car matters most at that hour.
San Francisco is a conference city. Large events fill the hotels around Moscone Center and Union Square, and kerbside queues grow on opening and closing days. Book early and confirm the hotel's loading area. The corporate meetings guide covers how we handle multi-vehicle arrivals, and our executive car service page describes monthly invoicing and hourly bookings. Delegations of up to 12 can travel in one Executive Sprinter; see Sprinter van with driver. For mini-coaches and coaches of 20 to 56 seats, ask the desk.
Beyond the city: Silicon Valley and wine country
Many guests combine a San Francisco hotel with other stops. Palo Alto is about 37 km (23 mi) from SFO, usually 30 to 50 minutes, and Napa is about 100 km (62 mi), usually 1 h 20 to 2 h. A multi-leg itinerary, such as airport to hotel, hotel to Napa for a day, then back, can be on one booking. The travel desk can sequence the legs.
For West Coast itineraries, see our Los Angeles hotel transfers page and the San Diego airport-to-hotel page. The hotel transfers hub lists every city, and the U.S. region page lists the American cities we cover.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get from SFO to my San Francisco hotel?
By BART from the International Terminal, by taxi or ride app, or by pre-booked car. Downtown is about 21 km (13 mi), usually 25 to 45 minutes by road and longer at weekday peaks. BART is about 30 minutes to the Market Street stations. A private car goes to the hotel entrance.
Are there free hotel shuttles at SFO?
Yes for hotels near the airport, which SFO says offer complimentary shuttles from designated zones. Confirm with the hotel. Hotels in San Francisco itself rarely run an airport shuttle, so BART, a taxi or a booked car is the realistic choice. The Grand Hyatt at SFO is on the airport.
Is the Grand Hyatt at SFO connected to the airport?
Yes. It has its own AirTrain station and an enclosed link to the lobby, per SFO. The AirTrain also serves the terminals and BART. A guest staying there does not need a car from the airport, though a car helps for onward trips into the city.
Is Oakland airport a good option for San Francisco hotels?
It can be. Oakland is about 30 km (19 mi) from downtown San Francisco, and BART connects it via the Oakland Airport Connector. Driving takes 25 to 40 minutes in light traffic and longer at peak. Compare flight times, not only distance.
Which is faster from SFO, BART or a private car?
At rush hour BART usually wins to Market Street hotels, because it avoids US-101. At midday, in the evening or late at night, a private car is faster door to door, especially for hotels on Nob Hill, at the Wharf or in the Marina, which are far from a station.
How much is a private transfer from SFO to my hotel?
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. There is no meter and no surge. Taxi and ride-app prices vary with traffic and demand, which is why many travellers prefer a quoted figure.
Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?
Yes. Every airport pickup is flight-tracked, and the free waiting clock starts at actual landing: 60 minutes after an international arrival and 30 after a domestic one. Tell the 24/7 desk if the airline rebooks you, and the driver is re-timed.
What is your cancellation policy?
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Conference weeks can bring a different deadline; if so, it is printed on your confirmation.
