Choosing a Washington DC airport to hotel car service starts with a map more than a menu. Reagan National (DCA) is about 8 km (5 mi) from downtown and can take as little as 15 minutes. Dulles (IAD) is about 45 km (28 mi) out, and a weekday afternoon turns the trip into a project. BWI Thurgood Marshall is about 50 km (31 mi) to the north-east, closer to Baltimore than to the capital. Your hotel might be a White House-view address near Lafayette Square, a Georgetown townhouse, a convention hotel at Mount Vernon Square or a resort at National Harbor. This page sorts it out, and shows when a private car booked through Onroutz.ca is the practical choice.
What is the best way to get from a Washington DC airport to your hotel?
For most travellers, a pre-booked private car is the simplest: the driver tracks your flight, meets you in arrivals and delivers you to the hotel entrance for a fixed fare. From Reagan National, Metrorail is a strong alternative if your hotel is beside a station and your bags are light.
Which airport you land at changes everything. A hotel on K Street from DCA is a short hop; the same hotel from Dulles is a 40 to 100 minute drive, depending on the hour. We take the airport, the flight number and the hotel, then quote a single fixed fare in the booker.
How far is each hotel area from each airport?
These are rounded road distances with off-peak to weekday-peak drive times. The Capital Beltway, the Dulles Toll Road and the bridges over the Potomac are the places where an ordinary drive becomes a long one.

The planning rule is easy: the two nearest hotels to each airport are the safest bets for time. The rest depend on the clock. For the full picture of Dulles roads, tolls and arrival doors, see our Washington Dulles airport page.
Every way from DC's airports to a hotel, side by side

| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car (Onroutz.ca) | 15–35 min from DCA; 40–100 from IAD; 45–90 from BWI | Fixed fare via booker, quoted before you pay | Sedan: 2 large + 2 cabin; SUV: 5–6 large; Sprinter: 12 | Groups, executives, children, long-haul arrivals |
| Metrorail Blue or Yellow line from DCA | About 20–40 min including the walk to the hotel | Distance-based fare set by WMATA | Carried through stations | One or two light travellers, hotel near a station |
| Metrorail Silver Line from Dulles | Roughly an hour to central stations | Distance-based fare set by WMATA | Carried through stations | Solo travellers, daytime arrivals |
| MARC or Amtrak from BWI Rail Station | Roughly 30 to 40 min to Union Station, plus the airport shuttle | Fare set by the operator | Platforms and a shuttle bus | Hotels near Union Station |
| Taxi | Same road time as the car | Metered or zone-based, set by the airport and city | Boot of a sedan or minivan | Short, simple trips |
| Ride app | Road time plus pickup walk | Surge-priced | Varies | Light bags, short notice |
| Hotel courtesy shuttle | Varies | Offered only by some airport-area hotels | Usually fine | Hotels at or near the airport |
Reagan National's ground transportation page lists the marked ride-app loading zones at each terminal, and explains that off-airport hotel shuttles use authorised pickup points on the terminal maps. BWI's transportation page places the taxi stand just outside baggage claim and sets ride-app pickups at the terminal curbs. The Dulles equivalent is the airport's ground transportation page.
When Metrorail wins, and when it does not
Reagan National has its own Metrorail station beside the terminals, served by the Blue and Yellow lines. If you are travelling alone, landing midday, and your hotel is a short walk from a station, the train is quicker than road traffic on the 14th Street Bridge and costs a fraction of a car.
The weak spot is the last stretch. Georgetown has no Metro station, so a Georgetown hotel means a walk or a transfer from Foggy Bottom. National Harbor has no Metrorail station either. And a heavy suitcase makes a station staircase feel long.
A private car wins when:
- You are three or more. One vehicle, one address.
- You are landing at Dulles or BWI. The train legs are long and involve a bus or a change.
- Your hotel is in Georgetown or at National Harbor. There is no direct rail.
- It is late. Rail service thins out late at night, and the road is open.
- There is a meeting waiting. A tracked flight and a fixed pickup help with a 10:00 appointment.
- You travel with children. Child seats are available on request.

Downtown, Lafayette Square and Penn Quarter
The hotels near the White House and along Pennsylvania Avenue are close enough to Reagan National that the drive is often 20 minutes. They are also the part of Washington where the street plan is most likely to shift under you. Presidential and diplomatic motorcades, demonstrations and National Mall events all close lanes with little warning. The chauffeur monitors live conditions, and we ask for the hotel and street at booking, so we can adjust the approach. Check-in is usually mid-afternoon, so a morning landing often means leaving bags at reception.
Georgetown, Foggy Bottom and the West End
Georgetown is the neighbourhood visitors expect to be on the Metro, and is not. The nearest station is at Foggy Bottom, and the walk to the Georgetown hotels is a good deal longer than it looks on a map. M Street and Wisconsin Avenue are slow at most hours. The driver chooses the approach on the day, and stops where the hotel's own arrival instructions direct, since streets near the canal are older and narrower.
Northern Virginia: Tysons, Crystal City and Dulles
Tysons is a business district, and its hotels host meetings from technology and government contractors. It lies roughly 25 to 50 minutes from Reagan and 25 to 70 from Dulles, depending on the time. Crystal City and Pentagon City are the closest hotels to Reagan National, minutes by car, though some travellers prefer to walk from the Metro. Hotels in Herndon and at the airport serve very late or very early flights, where a courtesy shuttle may be enough. Ask the hotel for its hours.
National Harbor and the BWI side
National Harbor, across the Potomac in Maryland, has no Metrorail station, which makes it a place where cars are the practical way in. It is about 20 to 40 minutes from Reagan and noticeably longer from Dulles. On the other side of the region, BWI is the natural airport for Baltimore: the Inner Harbor, Harbor East and Fells Point hotels in our table are typically 20 to 40 minutes from the terminals, and BWI is closer to them than any other airport. BWI's rail station has Amtrak and MARC trains to Union Station, linked to the terminals by a free shuttle bus; check the airport's Amtrak page for current details.
How the Washington transfer works with Onroutz.ca
Onroutz.ca is a transfer desk in Toronto. In the Washington area, the ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured US local transfer partner, and Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices it: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, and Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach vehicles up to seven.
On the day:
- The confirmation lists the vehicle class and the place to meet your chauffeur.
- Your flight is tracked from take-off, so an early, late or diverted arrival changes the pickup rather than cancelling it.
- Your chauffeur holds a name board inside the arrivals area, and can use a pseudonym on the board if you need privacy.
- Free waiting is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, counted from actual landing.
- The chauffeur loads your bags and takes you to the hotel entrance, or the nearest legal stop.
Where the driver meets you
At Reagan National, ride-app passengers are sent to marked loading zones at the curbs. A booked chauffeur does not make you hunt for a zone: the driver meets you inside arrivals and walks you out. At Dulles, the airport assigns numbered arrival doors, and with a meet and greet you skip the coordination. At BWI, taxis queue just outside baggage claim and ride-app pickups are on the Departures level curbs, so a driver with your name on a board is a calmer start.
If you arrive from Canada through a preclearance airport, you clear US customs before departure and land as a domestic passenger, so the shorter 30-minute free waiting window applies.
Government visits, conferences and event weeks
Washington's calendar bends traffic. Cherry blossom season in spring, Fourth of July, the Marine Corps Marathon in the autumn and any day Congress is in session add delay. Large conferences at the Convention Center fill the Mount Vernon Square hotels. Tell us the hotel and the dates, and add margin to departures, especially for early flights from Dulles. For a delegation, an Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, and mini-coaches and coaches from 20 to 56 seats are available on request. Executives can ask for a meet and greet with a pseudonym on the board, chauffeurs never photograph passengers or post about a trip, and a non-disclosure agreement can be signed if you ask. Onroutz.ca works alongside a client's own security team and does not provide armed drivers or bodyguards.
Choosing between DCA, Dulles and BWI when you can pick
If you have a choice of airport, the hotel decides it. A downtown, Georgetown or Crystal City stay points to Reagan National, because the saving is not only the drive but the variance: a short trip stays short even on a bad evening. A Tysons or Herndon stay can reasonably use Dulles. A Baltimore stay belongs to BWI. National Harbor falls between Reagan and BWI, and the better pick is the one with the better flight times that day. For airports far from the hotel, the car is often the dependable option, since a tracked flight and a fixed pickup turn an unpredictable drive into a plan.
Late flights and early starts
Airport-area hotels exist for the red-eye and the 06:00 departure, and for some travellers a courtesy shuttle is enough. For central hotels, a delayed landing is the usual problem. Because we track the flight, a delay moves the pickup; the free waiting clock starts at actual landing. For a 06:00 departure from Dulles, a pickup around 03:30 from a downtown hotel gives a sensible buffer. See executive car service for hourly bookings, and the fleet for every vehicle class.
Pair this with the rest of your trip
Washington is rarely the only stop on a US itinerary, and a driver in each city keeps the legs consistent. For the wider list, start at the USA hub, and for all of our hotel pages visit hotel transfers. If you are comparing a private car with a taxi or ride app, our airport transfer versus taxi versus rideshare guide goes through the trade-offs. Every airport we cover is on the airport transfers page, and the travel desk can sequence a multi-city trip.
Frequently asked questions
Which airport is closest to downtown Washington?
Reagan National (DCA), about 8 km from downtown, is by far the closest. Dulles is about 45 km away and BWI about 50 km. The drive from DCA can be as short as 15 minutes, while the others take 40 to 100 minutes depending on the hour.
Is there a free hotel shuttle from the airports?
Some airport-area hotels, such as those near Dulles and BWI, run courtesy shuttles. Hotels in downtown Washington, Georgetown and National Harbor do not offer airport shuttles in the same way. Ask your hotel before you rely on one.
Can a private car take me from Dulles to a Georgetown hotel?
Yes. Dulles to Georgetown is about 40 km and usually 35 to 95 minutes, depending on the hour. The booker quotes one fixed fare for the exact hotel and the vehicle.
Does the Metro go to Georgetown?
No. The nearest station is Foggy Bottom, and the walk to the Georgetown hotels is longer than it looks. A car is the usual way to reach them with luggage.
How long is BWI from Washington hotels?
BWI is about 48 to 58 km from most central hotels, usually 45 to 95 minutes by road. It is much closer to Baltimore hotels, at 20 to 40 minutes. A MARC or Amtrak train to Union Station is a rail alternative.
Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?
Yes. We track your flight, so a delay moves the pickup. Free waiting runs 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one, counted from actual landing. Other pickups carry 15 minutes of free waiting.
What is your cancellation policy?
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. A big event week may use a different cut-off, and your confirmation prints the one that applies.
