A Venice airport transfer to your hotel is a two-part journey, and any website that promises a car to the front door of a hotel in the historic city is leaving something out. Venice Marco Polo (VCE) sits on the mainland shore of the lagoon, about 13 km from Piazzale Roma, which is as far as a road vehicle can go. From there the island is reached by water taxi, public boat or on foot over bridges with steps. This page sets out both halves honestly: where Onroutz.ca and its licensed local partner drive you, where the boat takes over, and how the handoff between the two is planned so you are not left on a quay with your luggage.
What is the best way to get from Venice airport to your hotel?
If your hotel has a water entrance, the most direct way is a licensed water taxi from the airport pier, about 30 to 40 minutes to central addresses. If it does not, or you are staying in Mestre, the practical way is a private car to Piazzale Roma, then a short boat ride, a porter, or a walk.
There is no single right answer, because the right answer depends on where the hotel stands. A palace on the Grand Canal with its own landing stage, a small hotel on a lane a ten-minute walk from the nearest boat stop, and a business hotel in Mestre need three different plans. The sections below start with the geography, then compare every mode, then list the hotels we are most often asked about.
How far is each Venice hotel area from the airport?
All figures are approximate and depend on the exact address. Road time is for the leg from Marco Polo to the last car point; water time is from the airport pier to the hotel's nearest landing.
| Hotel area | Distance and route | Typical time | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Piazzale Roma, Santa Croce, Tronchetto | About 13 km by road | 20–30 min | End of the road; the hotel is a walk or short boat ride away |
| San Marco and the Grand Canal | Road to Piazzale Roma, then water; or water taxi direct | 30–40 min by water taxi from the airport pier | Many palaces have a landing stage on the canal |
| Castello and Riva degli Schiavoni | Water taxi direct, or road plus boat | 35–45 min by water taxi | Waterfront promenade; vaporetto stop at San Zaccaria nearby |
| Giudecca | Water taxi direct | About 30 min per the Cipriani's own estimate | An island: no road vehicles at all |
| Mestre and Marghera (mainland) | About 10 km by road | 15–25 min | Car goes to the door; the train is one stop from Santa Lucia |
| Lido | Boat only for visitors | About 1 hour by Alilaguna, per the airport's own page | Reached by water from the airport pier or San Marco |
Every way from Venice airport to a Venice hotel, side by side

| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car to Piazzale Roma, then porter or short boat | 20–30 min by car plus the last leg | Fixed fare via booker for the car; boat or porter paid separately | 2 large + 2 cabin in a sedan; 5–6 large in an SUV | Mainland hotels, hotels near Piazzale Roma, groups |
| Water taxi from the airport pier | About 30–40 min to central stops | Fare set per boat by the operator; confirm before boarding | Easy for heavy bags | Hotels with a canal landing |
| Alilaguna water bus | About 1 h 12 min to San Marco, per the airport's own page | Published fare | Steps and queues at piers | First sight of Venice from the water |
| ATVO express bus to Piazzale Roma | About 20 min to Piazzale Roma | Published bus fare | Carry the bags yourself | Light travellers near the station |
| Land taxi to Piazzale Roma | 20–30 min | Metered | 3–4 bags | Short notice |
| Private car to Mestre | 15–25 min | Fixed fare via booker | Same as above | Business hotels, conferences, onward trains |
The airport's own website lists bus and boat journey times, though it blocks automated link checks so we do not link it, and the express bus operator is ATVO. The Alilaguna lines are described on Alilaguna's site. Water-taxi fares are set per boat and are not printed in a way we can verify, so ask for the price before you board. Ours is a single fixed all-in fare for the road leg, shown in the booker before you pay.
Where the car stops and where the boat begins
The road from the airport runs south and joins the Liberty Bridge, the causeway across the lagoon. It ends at Piazzale Roma, with the car park island of Tronchetto beside it. Everything beyond is water or pavement. No taxi, limousine or private car can drive into the historic centre, and a driver who tells you otherwise is not describing Venice.
So the handoff is the whole job. There are three common versions of it:
- Car to a water taxi at Piazzale Roma. Your hotel, or you, book a water taxi to meet the car. We time the road leg to that boat and tell the driver where the quay is.
- Car to Piazzale Roma, then a porter. Many hotels near the station or around Santa Croce and Cannaregio send a porter with a trolley. You walk with them over the bridges.
- Water taxi direct from the airport. For a hotel with a landing stage, you skip the car entirely. The airport has its own water-taxi pier, reached on foot from the terminal.
Onroutz.ca does not run boats. Water taxis are operated by licensed local operators, and you can book one yourself or ask your hotel to do it. What we handle is the road leg and the timing around it: tell us the hotel, the landing it uses and the boat time, and the driver is briefed accordingly. A multi-leg itinerary can sit on one booking.
When a water taxi from the airport is simply better
If your hotel has a canal landing and you land in daylight with bags, the direct water taxi is hard to beat. It avoids the transfer from car to boat, the ride crosses the lagoon, and you arrive at the hotel's own landing. For one traveller or a couple that is usually the best door-to-door experience in Venice, and we would rather say so than sell you a car you do not need.
The case for the car is on the mainland side: Mestre, Marghera, Padua, Treviso, the Prosecco hills, Verona and the Dolomites. It is also the dependable choice for a family of five with six cases staying on a lane inside the city, because a car to Piazzale Roma and a porter is sometimes simpler than an airport boat queue. And if your flight lands at Treviso instead of Marco Polo, there is no airport boat at all.
Treviso airport: a different arrival
Some low-cost flights arrive at Treviso (TSF), roughly 25 km from Venice. The ATVO express bus takes about 60 to 70 minutes to Piazzale Roma. By road, a private car covers the distance in about 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic, and ends at Piazzale Roma or at a hotel in Mestre. The booking form asks for the airport by name, so check which one your ticket says. For the Marco Polo side, see the Venice airport transfer page.
Major hotels we drive to in Venice
The three addresses below are the ones travellers ask about most. Each is on or by the water, which makes the water leg part of the plan.
| Hotel | District | Closest airport | Pickup and drop-off note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Belmond Hotel Cipriani | Giudecca | Marco Polo (VCE) | An island hotel with no road access; the hotel runs its own launch from near Piazza San Marco and quotes about 30 minutes by water taxi from the airport, so confirm the launch schedule with the hotel |
| The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel | San Marco, on the Grand Canal | Marco Polo (VCE) | Has its own jetty on the canal, so a water taxi can land at the hotel; the street entrance is on Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, a long walk from Piazzale Roma |
| Danieli, Venezia, A Four Seasons Hotel (formerly Hotel Danieli) | Castello, Riva degli Schiavoni | Marco Polo (VCE) | Waterfront palace a short walk from Piazza San Marco; arrive by water taxi to its landing or take a boat to the San Zaccaria stop and walk |
Hotels are listed to help you plan; listing does not mean the hotel is affiliated with or endorses Onroutz.ca.
Ask each hotel which landing it uses and whether it will send a boat or a porter, then put that detail in your booking note. If the property has been rebranded or has seasonal arrangements, the hotel's own arrival page is the final word.
Arrival logistics at Marco Polo
The driver meets you inside arrivals with a name board. For privacy, an alias can go on the board. We track your flight from departure, so an early or late landing moves the pickup. After an international landing you have 60 minutes of free waiting; after a domestic landing, 30. That covers passport control and baggage.
The car is at the terminal door. Most vehicles carry water and phone charging, and child, toddler and booster seats can be reserved at booking. An Executive Sedan takes up to three passengers with two large and two cabin bags; a Luxury SUV up to six with five to six large bags; an Executive Sprinter up to 12 with 12 bags. See the fleet for every class.
Luggage and Venice's bridges
Luggage is the practical constraint in Venice. Hundreds of bridges have steps, and a wheeled case is easy on a boat and hard on stone. If your hotel is a long walk from the nearest landing, ask the hotel about a porter service before you arrive. A water taxi to the hotel's own landing removes the problem. A car to Piazzale Roma does not, so plan the last 200 metres.
Late arrivals and early departures
Public boats thin out in the evening, and the airport bus and the water bus keep to timetables, so a late landing narrows the options. A private car does not depend on those timetables, and a water taxi can usually be arranged for late hours at a price set by the operator. For early flights, plan the boat first: a hotel launch or water taxi must be booked the evening before, and the car is timed to meet it. Venice mornings can be foggy in the cold months, and high tides, known locally as acqua alta, can delay boats and flood low quays in autumn and winter. Allow extra time in those seasons.
Cruise ships and rail
Large cruise ships no longer use the Giudecca Canal, so a car to the mainland cruise terminals is common; see cruise transfers and tell us the terminal your line gives you. For arrivals by train at Santa Lucia, the station sits beside Piazzale Roma, so the same car-and-boat logic applies; browse rail transfers for the other station pages. Cruise and train guests staying in Venice often combine the arrival with a hotel launch.
Day-visitor fees and entry rules
The City of Venice has run a day-visitor access fee on selected days. Guests staying overnight are treated differently, and the rules change, so check the current position at Venezia Unica before you travel. Italy is in the Schengen Area, and the EU's Entry/Exit System is being phased in for non-EU visitors; the position is explained at travel-europe.europa.eu.
How the Venice transfer works with Onroutz.ca
Onroutz.ca is a transfer desk based in Toronto. In Italy, the road leg is driven by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local transfer partner, and Onroutz.ca books, confirms, supports and invoices it from Toronto: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one 24/7 contact. Partner vehicles are no more than four model years old, up to seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach. We do not own cars, boats or offices in Italy.
Pair this with the rest of your trip
Many Venice trips continue to Rome, where the Rome airport-to-hotel transfer page picks up the story, or to the Greek islands via Athens. Every other European city we serve is listed on the Europe hub, and the full set of hotel guides is under hotel transfers. For the general comparison of cars, taxis and apps, read airport transfer versus taxi versus rideshare, and for a driver in arrivals, see meet and greet.
Frequently asked questions
Can a car take me from Venice airport to my hotel?
Only as far as Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto car island. After that you take a boat or walk. Hotels in Mestre and the rest of the mainland can be reached by car at the door. For canal hotels, a water taxi from the airport pier is often the most direct choice.
How long does a water taxi from Venice airport to a hotel take?
Typically about 30 to 40 minutes to central addresses such as San Marco, depending on the route, the tide and the boat. The Belmond Cipriani quotes about 30 minutes from the airport to its own landing. Ask the operator for a confirmed time and price before you board.
What is the best way to transfer from Marco Polo Airport to Venice with heavy luggage?
For a hotel with a landing, a direct water taxi. Otherwise a car to Piazzale Roma with a hotel porter or a pre-booked boat. The airport bus and public boats are cheaper but leave you to manage bags and steps, so they suit light travellers.
Is Uber available at Venice airport?
Not as a way into the historic centre, since cars cannot enter it. Ride apps may serve mainland addresses, but a booked transfer or a licensed water taxi is the dependable way to a hotel, because boats are what actually reach the doors.
How much does a taxi cost from Venice airport to the city centre?
Land taxis are metered and stop at Piazzale Roma; water taxis are priced per boat by the operator, and the price varies with the destination. We do not quote another operator's price. Ours is a fixed all-in fare for the road leg, visible in the booker.
Can you take me from Treviso airport to my Venice hotel?
Yes, to Piazzale Roma or a mainland hotel. Treviso is roughly 25 km from Venice and the drive usually takes 35 to 50 minutes. Tell us which airport your flight uses when you book, since the pickup point is different.
What is your cancellation policy?
More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less, or a no-show: 100%, counted from the scheduled pickup. Peak events occasionally use a different cut-off, which is stated on the confirmation.
